Yoko Ono has had 13 number one dance hits.

Which puts her in 11th for the artist that’s had the most number ones on the dance chart. She’s in the the same league as Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue, Martha Wash, Kristine W., Mariah Carey, Donna Summer, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez, who have had between 14-18 number ones.

Madonna is still the champ at 50, and I don’t think anyone will touch that records anytime soon .

But still Yoko is in that category.

Not sure if this was one of them but it certainly deserved to be.

Can I tell my favorite Yoko Ono story?

I worked in a store on the UES and she was a client. I was friendly with her driver who would stop by and pick up stuff for her across the park from the Dakota - the one she ended up firing and suing. But that's not the story.

Yoko had an exhibition in Chelsea of photographs and various works. The front part of the gallery was descriptions of therapist she had visited over the years, doctors 1-9 (I - VIIII). There was a section in the back where visitors could take a picture of themselves through a hole in a big curtain hanging from the ceiling. You were suppose to place your face in the hole, take a pic and then post it on the wall to the side. I lived in Chelsea. My husband and I were in the habit of strolling the galleries on our downtime. They were usually quiet during the day. So seeing her set up, my husband grabbed the polaroid camera and I snuck behind the curtain. I pulled my pants down, stuck my ass in the hole and spread my cheeks - a direct hole shot. I posted the polaroid on the wall with all the faces with the description "Doctor X."

I'll never forget when I and all the other young gay men at the discotheque would dance our asses off to tracks from her 1971 masterpiece album "Fly."

No dance track from the 1970s was ever quite as catchy or soulful as her fabulous "Don't Worry, Kyoko."

I walked into a store in Dublin and there she was, checking out this beautifully dressed bed. I had met Paul a year earlier, with Heather Mills And Paul Newman at a charity event. She was tiny, beige coat and beige floppy hat. She caught my reaction and giggled.

Why doesn’t she just run a rake across the chalkboard?

Your mind must be a delightfully interesting private disco, OP!

I will give her this - she was much more attractive once she pruned those eyebrows and cut the curtain of hair.

“Yoko Ono shocked a packed house last week during a performance when she ripped up a Bible onstage.

Even more shocking: Yoko Ono performed in front of a packed house”.

-Norm McDonald, SNL.

I’d say her disco hits are much more aligned with those of Divine.

I love Yoko.

People say she’s shit but I think then won’t give her credit for her catchy songs. “Kiss Kiss Kiss”, “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him”, “Walking on Thin Ice” and some others that were obvious hits.

Yoko gets shit cause she’s judged by people who would have never listened to her. Shitty Beatles fans who have the most basic bitch taste..

by Anonymousreply 11October 11, 2025 2:51 AM

She’s like if Bjork had married James Whitfield. Her music would have never been appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 12October 11, 2025 2:56 AM

I'll always feel pity for her having lost John in such a meaningless way. We were all shocked by his manner of death but for her it must have been torture.

by Anonymousreply 13October 11, 2025 3:00 AM

"Beatles! Stop!"

by Anonymousreply 14October 11, 2025 3:00 AM

And one more thing.

Yoko was before punk, thrash metal, noise rock, and etc. There were no other records like that before her.

Screaming noisy boys got praised for their noise but a Japanese woman doing the same thing was “bad”.

So I just think everyone is ignorant when it comes to her.

I would love to hear Yoko's cover on "Love to Love You, Baby." What a brilliant choice to howl like a wolf rather than to make orgasmic noises like Donna Summer did.

I have always enjoyed her dance music and also the remakes hipster musicians made to honour Yoko. Her late career albums are good.

I like some tunes on her old records. She had a good band.

Some of her art has been fantastic, too.

Beatles fans were not ready for Yoko. The general public was never going to get her, either. Who cares.

Such high art.

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2025 3:52 PM

Fluxus was the antithesis of high art, dumbass.
