Aunt -- "awnt" or "ant"

How do you pronounce?

by Anonymousreply 130October 11, 2025 3:52 AM

Ant I say!

by Anonymousreply 1October 9, 2025 3:45 PM

I’m white and Midwestern, so I say ant.

by Anonymousreply 2October 9, 2025 3:45 PM

Awnt -from New England.

by Anonymousreply 3October 9, 2025 3:48 PM

Anty

by Anonymousreply 4October 9, 2025 3:50 PM

[quote] Awnt -from New England.

I see that you left the white as implied by the region

by Anonymousreply 5October 9, 2025 3:50 PM

Ahnt, from Boston

by Anonymousreply 6October 9, 2025 3:55 PM

R6 took the words out of my mouth. It’s definitely not “ant”, that is for a different set. There’s also no W in the pronunciation.

by Anonymousreply 7October 9, 2025 3:58 PM

This called for a poll, OP.

Ant, but I’m southern, and sometimes I give words a dubious accent.

by Anonymousreply 8October 9, 2025 4:01 PM

Brits say 'Arnt.'

by Anonymousreply 9October 9, 2025 4:04 PM

Ant.

by Anonymousreply 10October 9, 2025 4:05 PM

Ont.

by Anonymousreply 11October 9, 2025 4:21 PM

Ant.

by Anonymousreply 12October 9, 2025 4:23 PM

Awnt, I'm from CT.

by Anonymousreply 13October 9, 2025 4:26 PM

Though I was raised by jackals, I use the elongated pronunciation.

American English has too many harsh nasal sounds to choose to say "ant." And you can't say "Aunt Agatha" to good effect if it's "Ant Agatha."

by Anonymousreply 14October 9, 2025 4:26 PM

Depends if you are a Susan or a Sharon

by Anonymousreply 16October 9, 2025 4:32 PM

Ant. White So Cal

by Anonymousreply 17October 9, 2025 4:37 PM

Watch it, sucka!

by Anonymousreply 18October 9, 2025 4:42 PM

Ahnt, in Maine. Awnt is more Minnesota i think. Ant is an insect.

by Anonymousreply 19October 9, 2025 5:02 PM

If you understand it - then it isn't wrong.

by Anonymousreply 20October 9, 2025 5:04 PM

My pronunciation is sort of halfway between “ahnt” (Bostonian born and raised) and “ant” (most of America)

by Anonymousreply 21October 9, 2025 5:10 PM

If you're in Mayberry it's "Aint".

by Anonymousreply 22October 9, 2025 5:12 PM

Tia

by Anonymousreply 23October 9, 2025 5:32 PM

Neither; I say "ahnt."

by Anonymousreply 24October 9, 2025 5:50 PM

R5 Black Americans in every part of the Us say awnt.

Fuck off

by Anonymousreply 25October 9, 2025 6:23 PM

My Cambridge mom used to say; my sister doesn’t crawl on the grass! So it’s awnt/ahnt (same thing) and never ant.

by Anonymousreply 26October 9, 2025 6:25 PM

It's pronounced Beloved Cunt.

by Anonymousreply 27October 9, 2025 6:26 PM

Ant, like Aunt Bee

by Anonymousreply 28October 9, 2025 6:26 PM

But it’s Aint Bee

by Anonymousreply 29October 9, 2025 6:33 PM

It’s Beaver!

by Anonymousreply 30October 9, 2025 6:45 PM

Tsk tsk tsk

by Anonymousreply 31October 9, 2025 6:46 PM

I’ve always pronounced it as ant, but I deliberately pronounce it as awnt in the presence of my racist sister & our niece. I also believe it’s the correct pronunciation.

by Anonymousreply 32October 9, 2025 7:13 PM

R24 which is clearly what OP was going for when they wrote “awnt.” Don’t be the pedant everyone hates—not a good look.

by Anonymousreply 33October 9, 2025 7:43 PM

I say Ant. I’m from New Jersey. My cousins moved from here to Darien. It was always a little hilarious watching them trying to decide how to address my mother.

by Anonymousreply 34October 9, 2025 7:48 PM

They were all laughing at you, from CT.

by Anonymousreply 35October 9, 2025 7:53 PM

Ant. White. Northern California

by Anonymousreply 36October 9, 2025 7:53 PM

Stanford ant.

Berkeley ahnt.

by Anonymousreply 37October 9, 2025 7:56 PM

Daunt. Flaunt. Gaunt. Haunt. Jaunt. Taunt.

by Anonymousreply 38October 9, 2025 8:05 PM

Dant glant jant …ain’t

by Anonymousreply 39October 9, 2025 8:24 PM

Awnt or Awntie. Grew up in NC.

by Anonymousreply 40October 9, 2025 8:31 PM

It's "Aunt Jemima" not "Ahnt Jemima"!

by Anonymousreply 41October 9, 2025 8:33 PM

We’re not in Kansas anymore. …we never were!

by Anonymousreply 42October 9, 2025 8:49 PM

We say Awnt pronounced like taunt. But we also say Ant Jemimah. And Aint Bee.

by Anonymousreply 43October 9, 2025 9:02 PM

I ain’t give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 44October 9, 2025 9:03 PM

Awnt and Ahnt are different.

by Anonymousreply 45October 9, 2025 9:15 PM

Awnt, from Minnesota.

Ants are tiny insects that work together to carry heavy objects, and build hills

by Anonymousreply 46October 9, 2025 9:35 PM

It’s Ant Jemima

by Anonymousreply 47October 9, 2025 9:41 PM

R45 catch a clue. On the DL, in this thread, awnt was clearly meant to be in opposition to ant…it’s the only reasonable conclusion: inthis discussion awnt is seen as being the same as ahnt.

Don't be a dick.

by Anonymousreply 48October 9, 2025 9:46 PM

R47 ironic isn’t it—only white thrash say ant. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 49October 9, 2025 9:47 PM

And trash 🤠

by Anonymousreply 50October 9, 2025 9:50 PM

Antee

by Anonymousreply 51October 9, 2025 9:51 PM

It’s ant with a very long A.

I’m from the southern Chicago suburbs.

by Anonymousreply 52October 9, 2025 9:53 PM

[quote]Awnt -from New England.

Also from New England, but where it's Ahhnt, not Awnt.

by Anonymousreply 53October 9, 2025 9:56 PM

Ahnt was not an option in the thread title, nitpickers.

by Anonymousreply 54October 9, 2025 9:58 PM

I got aunts in my paunts!!!

by Anonymousreply 55October 9, 2025 9:59 PM

Then the thread title is flawed, R54.

by Anonymousreply 56October 9, 2025 9:59 PM

Ant

by Anonymousreply 57October 9, 2025 10:05 PM

Ohnt (not awnt, not ahnt, most certainly not any)

(White, western mass)

by Anonymousreply 58October 9, 2025 10:07 PM

Ant. Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada.

by Anonymousreply 59October 9, 2025 10:12 PM

High five, R58! Springfield here!!

by Anonymousreply 60October 9, 2025 10:20 PM

Ah the ancestral area R60. Life is sometimes just a journey up route 202 with a ham and pickle salad sandwich for the road.

I think it’s the French Canadian influence since Northern Maine has a similar pronunciation.

by Anonymousreply 62October 9, 2025 10:42 PM

R61 —all the Canucks in Cambridge are laughing at you. The title’s use of awnt is consistent with the universal NE understanding that, between two possible pronunciations, ant is incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 67October 9, 2025 10:57 PM

Springfield peaked over a 100 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 68October 9, 2025 10:58 PM

Awnt is the pronunciation my Sicilian American relatives in the Hudson Valley use. It’s fuller vowel sound and takes longer to say.

It’s been a shithole for a long time R67, but the museums are still nice.

by Anonymousreply 69October 9, 2025 11:00 PM

Jesus H Christ. The Op typed awnt in opposition to ant. The Op was not transcribing for linguists…it was meant to be in the same way as ahnt.

Move on.

by Anonymousreply 70October 9, 2025 11:03 PM

Springfield MA was the only place I've ever been gay bashed. I was sitting in my car *across the street* from a gay bar and some drunk asshole comes up and says, "Are you gay?" Wisely, I said, "No." He said, "Good, because if you were, I'd have to rip off your head and shit down your neck." Then he banged the hood of my car and walked away.

by Anonymousreply 71October 9, 2025 11:11 PM

even AI understands that aw-ah are intended to convey the same thing, in opposition to ant.

“…pronounce "aunt" with a long 'ah' or 'aw' vowel sound, like in "father," making it distinct from the insect "ant". American…”

by Anonymousreply 72October 9, 2025 11:11 PM

r70 you have to remember that this is Aspielounge. Posters will seize on some trifling little bullshit thing and be laser focused on it, while the normal posters just shake our heads and go "WTF?"

by Anonymousreply 73October 9, 2025 11:12 PM

[quote] “…pronounce "aunt" with a long 'ah' or 'aw' vowel sound, like in "father," making it distinct from the insect "ant". American…”

So is that the normal "fahther" pronunciation or the pretentious "fawther"?

by Anonymousreply 74October 9, 2025 11:19 PM

Or posters from the Northeast hear the regional differences between Awnt, Ahnt, and Ont and people who grew up with everyone around them saying “ant” just can’t.

I didn’t grow up speaking French and can’t hear the difference between sus and sous despite French speakers telling me that they are obviously different. Ditto why native Chinese speakers can’t distinguish between L and R sounds. You lose the ability to hear the differences in sounds that aren’t distinguished between in a language you learned as a child.

It depends on the person I'm talking to.

by Anonymousreply 80October 9, 2025 11:25 PM

Awnt is not just northeastern though honestly. Down souf black people with heavy accents or southern drawls and what not say awnt.

by Anonymousreply 81October 9, 2025 11:29 PM

Yes we know

by Anonymousreply 87October 10, 2025 12:29 AM

You’ll need more than a glass of warder to warsh that out.

by Anonymousreply 88October 10, 2025 12:32 AM

Did you buy INsurance to protect the ruff?

by Anonymousreply 89October 10, 2025 12:32 AM

Aren't. We New Englanders are a various bunch.

by Anonymousreply 90October 10, 2025 12:32 AM

Southern Vermont R90?

by Anonymousreply 91October 10, 2025 12:36 AM

If RFK Jr. saw this thread, he'd be doing a survey on how many of your mothers took Tylenol.

by Anonymousreply 92October 10, 2025 12:36 AM

We are not, when it comes to THAT word.

Your parent’s sister, or your parent’s brother’s wife, ain’t an ant. That’s all folks.

by Anonymousreply 93October 10, 2025 12:37 AM

Ozarks Hillbilly and we say ain't.

by Anonymousreply 94October 10, 2025 12:46 AM

It's ROOF like FROOT LOOPS.

by Anonymousreply 95October 10, 2025 12:47 AM

[quote]It depends on the person I'm talking to.

For me, it depends on the aunt I'm talking about, r80.

by Anonymousreply 97October 10, 2025 1:28 AM

Is there a correlation between people who say awnt and drain their pasta?

by Anonymousreply 98October 10, 2025 1:29 AM

Ants eat passta

by Anonymousreply 99October 10, 2025 1:35 AM

I say "ant"

by Anonymousreply 100October 10, 2025 1:39 AM

[quote]Jesus H Christ. The Op typed awnt in opposition to ant. The Op was not transcribing for linguists…it was meant to be in the same way as ahnt.

Sorry, but a thread about regional pronunciations shouldn't be so sloppy as to equate "awnt" and "ahnt." And to accuse those who insist on making a distinction between the two of being "nitpickers" in such a thread is ludicrous.

by Anonymousreply 101October 10, 2025 2:12 AM

There are two ways to say the word in the U.S.

One—ant—is incorrect 👻

The other— unless you’re a linguist on the spectrum editing a new Webster’s—is understood by awnt/ahnt (which is correct).

by Anonymousreply 102October 10, 2025 2:26 AM

And R101 is a beyotch.

by Anonymousreply 103October 10, 2025 2:29 AM

r101 is another Aspie.

by Anonymousreply 104October 10, 2025 2:30 AM

It was always “ant” in TX which sounds really low class in retrospect

by Anonymousreply 105October 10, 2025 3:29 AM

It was ALWAYS low class…

by Anonymousreply 106October 10, 2025 3:31 AM

And then it became only blacks on tv who said “Auntie”, so I just gave up

by Anonymousreply 107October 10, 2025 3:31 AM

Are you saying you’re still a bigot or now a reformed bigot?

by Anonymousreply 108October 10, 2025 3:34 AM

Ant - with a soft A, like in apple, but not the British ahhnt. Standard Southern California vowel.

by Anonymousreply 109October 10, 2025 5:29 AM

Would it help r101 if we just made it between those who pronounce the “u” in aunt and those who do not? What that relax you?

by Anonymousreply 110October 10, 2025 6:09 AM

No, r110, but perhaps slurping my peen would.

by Anonymousreply 111October 10, 2025 6:54 AM

I mean how could I resist that big pedant energy?

by Anonymousreply 112October 10, 2025 7:05 AM

Awnt.

I’m also from Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 113October 10, 2025 7:14 AM

ANT.

by Anonymousreply 114October 10, 2025 7:19 AM

ANT - from Calif

by Anonymousreply 115October 10, 2025 7:22 AM

An oft-told story. I grew up off a street named Lahser. My mother - & admittedly almost everyone else I knew - pronounced the street as “Lasher,” even though a nearby suburban school with Lahser in its name was pronounced as it was spelled. When as an adult I asked her why she pronounced the name of the street as she did, my mother pointed out a neighbor woman who pronounced it as spelled but discounted it because she was always “putting on airs.”

by Anonymousreply 116October 10, 2025 8:24 AM

Ant.

by Anonymousreply 117October 10, 2025 8:35 AM

Aunt | ant, änt

by Anonymousreply 118October 10, 2025 8:41 AM

Words - & phrases - can be so bastardized by misuses, R118, that their misuses can become accepted, even the norm.

by Anonymousreply 119October 10, 2025 11:54 AM

If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle

by Anonymousreply 120October 10, 2025 12:10 PM

Ant -- born and raised in NY.

by Anonymousreply 121October 10, 2025 1:01 PM

Let me know if anyone wants me to start a with a poll with all 8 choices of pronunciation. I would, of course, give credit to the OP of this thread for beginning the discussion and it might make some of the thread monitors who insist on only two possible pronunciations less anxious to have non-OP mentioned possibilities no longer discussed here.

by Anonymousreply 122October 10, 2025 1:10 PM

ElderLiz, if you do start a poll, please don't include all the permutations of the long A pronunciation.

by Anonymousreply 123October 10, 2025 1:34 PM

^The short A, not the long A.

by Anonymousreply 124October 10, 2025 1:55 PM

It's the variations of the regional pronunciations that make the topic interesting. To try to narrow it down, especially to narrow it down to only two options, defeats the whole purpose.

by Anonymousreply 125October 10, 2025 10:19 PM

My former boyfriend was from the Midwest. White. He said "ant." I was raised, as an African American, to say, Ahhhnt." That was like, 40 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 126October 10, 2025 10:44 PM

Southerners say "Ain't"

by Anonymousreply 127October 10, 2025 10:45 PM

Def Ant

by Anonymousreply 128October 11, 2025 1:01 AM

Cunt, the short U.

by Anonymousreply 129October 11, 2025 1:11 AM

It is t r125 because there is no infighting between the various long A contingents. They hear the differences amongst themselves as accents, not full on mispronunciations.
