Be sure to collect them all: VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, Ultra HD Blu-Ray 4K and soon You Are There.

Laserdisc was long gone by the time this came out.
But I would collect all of them. It’s one of the best films I ever watched.

One of my all-time fave movies! We watch it at least once a year. Fewer films capture the nuances of the eras the storyline passes through like Boogie Nights. Every performance is spot on. Although I do think that Wahlberg is the runt of the litter. Scotty is one of the most authentic gay depictions in screen & Phillip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant in his delivery--humor, sadness, struggle, yet still a fully evolved without falling prey to stereotypical tragedy. Each character in this movie is a movie waiting to be produced.

I thought PSH was repulsive. Loved Burt and Roller Girl.

My favorite thing about this movie is how much Reynolds hated it. He hated this movie so much that he never even watched the final product and campaigned to not get nominated for it. And still got nominated

I've never looked at basketball courts quite in the same way since seeing this movie.

R5 Reynolds campaigned to not get nominated? I don't think you're correct about that detail.
He hated working with PTA, and he thought the movie would kill what was left of his career. However, once it was well-received by the critics and an Oscar campaign was started, I'm pretty certain he changed his tune.
I think he was expected to win over Robin Williams, (both were sentimental favorites), but in the last weeks of voting, stories circulated about Reynolds' onset behavior, and Good Will Hunting having a late Xmas release worked in Robin Williams' favor.
Burt was bitterly disappointed! BITTERLY!

R7 false. He never campaigned at all.

Seeing that Boogie Nights was released in 1997 just made me feel older than dirt.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 9, 2025 7:15 PM |
It's a very good film but it's too long, especially for what it is.
I love PT Anderson, but this is a problem with almost all of his films--they could always stand judicious cutting (even the masterpieces like There Will Be Blood).
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 9, 2025 7:15 PM |
R7 he hated the movie until the day he died. He refused to ever watch the final product. He saw an early cut and hated it so much he called and fired his agent right after. He refused to ever watch the Final Cut released to theaters outside of clips shown to him.
He loathed PTA, correct. They actually almost got into fist fights numerous times while filming, that’s how bad their relationship was. Reynolds felt PTA was a young entitled arrogant shit who hadn’t earned the ego he had. He found him rude and disrespectful. He also felt PTA was glamorizing and romanticizing pornography and that wasn’t the film he signed up for. I assume there were a lot of rewrites and edits he didn’t like. He also hated the shift in tone throughout the film.
He just wasn’t a fan and still hated it even after winning a Globe.

He was a bitter old man by that point.
Burt Reynolds had a lot of talent, but he became overly infatuated with his own importance in the 70s and early 80s and could not get over himself. I genuinely think he could have been a superb character actor more often when he aged, but he kept letting his ego get in the way.
(See also: Kevin Costner.)

[quote]Burt Reynolds did not campaign for an Oscar for Boogie Nights; he was famously reluctant to promote the film and even fired his agent for recommending it, though he was surprised and pleased by his eventual Academy Award nomination. Despite his initial disdain for the movie, he won a Golden Globe for the role and received his only Oscar nomination for it, ultimately losing to Robin Williams.

FYI for non-collectors: most 'standard' 4K editions that are released at the same time as pricier steelbook editions have the same transfer and special features, so compare the specs before pre-ordering if you're indifferent to which packaging and artwork are used.
In other long-awaited 4K news, "Edward Scissorhands" was just announced for an October 28th release in North America. It's steelbook only for now, which Disney has been pushing to justify higher prices and pre-order frenzies.

R14 thanks for confirming what I said. He never campaigned
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 9, 2025 7:43 PM |
R7 here. I'm not denying Burt hated the movie and most everything associated with it. I just don't think he would actively campaign "Please, don't nominate me!" If that's truly how he felt, he would have done a Brando or a George C. Scott and boycotted the ceremony.
I don't know whether or not he campaigned once the film was released, (although showing up to accept your Golden Globe could be considered campaigning), I'm just saying it's my belief he would have willingly eaten crow if his name had been called!
P.S. His last major film role was an indie called The Last American Movie Star. The movie was so-so, but he was great! Well worth your time if you ever come across it.

I've listened to a few well researched movie podcasts. Reynolds bad mouthed his experience, at the very least, after release and into awards season. That was in public, so who knows how bad it was in private.

Burt was always a piece of shit. He was born that way & died that way. I'm so glad he LOST

Reynolds won the SAG Award too. He was great! His Golden Globe speech was nice: he mentions Paul, as well as "the finest young actors I've ever worked with in my life." He looked really good that night, better hair than usual, as did Miss Bacall presenting the award.

I can’t find a link — looks like Amazon had it posted but has since pulled it.
Thanks to the poster who mentioned Edward Scissorhands — I just preordered that.

That was my first thought, r13.
PSH was supposed to be extremely pathetic, r4. That was part of his character's charm. We've all known unattractive gay men who lust after completely unavailable straight men. John C. Reilly is my least favorite actor in this film. He really grosses me out. I skip past his scenes in Boogie Nights and Magnolia.

The "Will You Be My Mom?" scene is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

Burt Reynolds was a good actor who made lousy choices based on friendship.
He turned down the Jack Nicholson part in "Terms of Endearment" because he promised his friend Hal Needham he'd be in "Stroker Ace."
He could be an asshole to fellow actors, but kept Dom DeLuise and Jim Nabors working.
His career might have turned out differently if he made better decisions, but you have to admit, his loyalty is charming.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 10, 2025 1:10 PM |
Oh, and he also lost shit tons of money on the theater in Jupiter, Florida because he wanted to keep people working.

Kathleen Turner hated Reynolds and said he was a prick to her. She seems pretty cool so I'm inclined to believe that about him.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 10, 2025 7:44 PM |
She was mean to him too.

R22 preorders were much higher than they expected in the first day so they pulled it. Preorders “sold out”

Burt Reynolds was a good egg and loyal. He took care of his people. And he had a great career.
Speaking like he was out of work most of his life. He was rich and always booked.
