But this article seems like someone has a vendetta against him. IMO picking on Kevin Costner is akin to picking on Henry Winkler. They’re both neat.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 9, 2025 3:13 AM |
“Horizon” should have been a TV miniseries. It had moments, but simply wasn’t good enough, and the oddest thing about it was how mediocre the cinematography was. Though most of it was shot outdoors in some of the prettiest western scenery you could imagine, it wasn’t shot in widescreen HD, no VistaVision or 60mm or IMAX, so it never had the epic sweep Costner promised. The whole project felt moldy, Costner is living back in the ‘90s, his heyday, whereas the business — and filmmaking — has grown way beyond him.
Oh, and his many problems couldn’t happen to a not-nicer guy.

What did he do to West Bentley?:
“The incident with Wes was the line in the sand. Everything was different after that,” says another source who was also present for the fight with Bentley. “Everyone loved Wes and so that really made Taylor upset. Kevin and Taylor butted heads from there on out. It got very awkward.” (A spokesperson for Bentley confirmed the altercation, calling it a “work related argument during an emotional and physically tough scene,” which was “discussed and resolved.” Costner’s spokesperson declined to comment on the near fisticuffs.)

It’s in the article, R7.
“But between takes, tensions boiled over. Costner, both star and executive producer, was pushing Bentley to ditch Taylor Sheridan’s script and play the moment his way. Bentley refused. He told Costner that he had signed up for a Taylor Sheridan show, not a Kevin Costner production. ‘Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him,’ says a source who was present. ‘No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.’ [Kelly] Reilly, according to one witness, was in tears. Production briefly shut down.”

He sounds like Norma Desmond, trying to get her Salome project off the ground:
"But despite the legal headaches, the continuing costs and the reputational harm the Horizon debacle has caused him, he has shown no indication that he plans to cut and run from his vision of producing four epic Western films. He continues to pound the pavement looking for financing to finish the third and fourth installment."

by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 9, 2025 4:21 AM |
First off, Kevin Costner definitely had a comeback. He’s the most popular he’s been in like 25–30 years.
When I was a kid in the 90s, he was the least cool movie star. He wasn’t as handsome or daring as Gibson, Cruise, Willis, or Will Smith, and he didn’t have the charm or warmth of Tom Hanks. He always felt kind of stiff — like your dad’s favorite actor, not yours.
Then the big flops hit — Waterworld, The Postman — and he basically vanished. When he tried to come back with something edgier like Mr. Brooks, it didn’t land. It was too late.
But what’s funny is now everything that made him “uncool” back then actually works for him. Yellowstone turned his old-school, stoic, moral-cowboy vibe into his biggest strength. He’s not trying to be cool anymore — he is the genre.
He’s having the career everyone thought was over twenty years ago.

I think I've only seen two of his movies, both with my parents (so movies I wouldn't ordinarily go to), but I disagree that he's only boring. The first movie was when he was an unknown in some western in the 90s, and I remember being impressed by him. I wasn't surprised when he became a star. Sure, he's not a charisma monster, but there's a place for his kind of presence.
As to Yellowstone, my Left Coast sisters were OBSESSED with it, and it seems to be doing very well abroad, too. So not only in red states.

It's kinda interesting to see how "Dances with Wolves" was, back in the day considered one of THE MOVIES that defined 1990 (or the early 90s in general), but now it seems totally overrated, forgotten and irrelevant to newer generations in contrast with other films from that year that are now everlasting cult classics like "Home Alone", "Ghost", "Pretty Woman", "Goodfellas", "Kindergarten Cop", etc.
JFK was definitely his best film during the 90s decade (I also enjoyed "Revenge" and "Tin Cup"). The Bodyguard endurance in pop culture is obviously because of the soundtrack (not because of him). Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves also seems forgotten (only remains sort of popular due to the annoying Bryan Adams song).
Then most of his 90s filmography are absolute turds like Wyatt Earp, Waterworld, The Postman, Message in a Bottle, For Love of the Game.
And I don't remember quite frankly if he had a relevan box-office hit movie in the 2000s. I only remember watching him in more massive turds like 3000 Miles to Graceland, Dragonfly and The Guardian.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 9, 2025 5:48 AM |

This is a fairly easy one. Kevin Costner has high-functioning autism (Aspergers' Syndrome.)
*reputation for extreme privacy
*has an unusual mystique that's hard to pinpoint despite seeming lack of a personality
*obsessive interest in one thing nobody else cares about (westerns)
*insanely stubborn and difficult to work with due to theory of mind deficit common in autistic people
*wide-set eyes with clear, sparkling irises. Eyes tend not to focus on anything.

R43 it astonishes me that people still can’t piece together that when someone is branded as difficult to the point of being called “impossible” to work with - mind you, in Hollywood, an industry that already runs on hot air and inflated egos - it is very possible the person is autistic.
Among the traits most associated with high-functioning autism:
-Blunt communication and difficulty with teamwork and collaboration
-Discomfort in social politics
-Social naiveté
-Rigid adherence to personal principles and routine
-Intense focus on abstract ideas
The last one is important because autistic people are believed to compromise a significant number of revolutionaries in world history. One of the most accurate depictions of high-functioning autism was Paul Giamatti’s portrayal of John Adams in the HBO limited series of the same name. John Adams was a brilliant revolutionary who became a terrible president because he was unable to get along with people. This scene with Franklin is priceless.
Other revolutionaries believed to be autistic include Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, T.E. Lawrence and David Ben-Gurion.

The standoff becomes somewhat amusing when you consider that Wes Bentley is also likely on the spectrum (Bentley famously melted down as soon as he achieved success with American Beauty).
Two autistic people engaged in a standoff is brutal because neither will ever consider compromising. They just go on, and on, and on.
Look at JK Rowling versus the Transes.

I love this narcissistic quote from the article. Obviously Kevin is stuck in the early 90s. Does he really think some billionaire is going to give him a blank check? Maybe for The Bodyguard 2, but not for a Western. I really don't think we can chalk this up to autism.

Gibson was taken down by his own mental instability, but Costner has so far been able to weather his changes of fortune whenever his Jesus-complex films crash and burn (like WATERWORLD and THE POSTMAN)

I didn't know Costner had gone bald. He wasn't masculine enough to pull off the shaved head like Willis.
Dear freaking god, DL, please never change. A thread about a bland Hollywood star contains references to Karl Marx and Das Kapital
[QUOTE]Other revolutionaries believed to be autistic include Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, T.E. Lawrence and David Ben-Gurion.
Is this meant to say Costner is a cinematic revolutionary or something?

Trust me-Costner isn't that deep of a man!! He got ISSUES, lots of them.

Totally fucking agree with that, Dennis Quaid was sexier& hotter than Costner.
And that smile of his, you know that Dennis Quaid throws a mean, awesome FUCK to his female conquests.

Kevin, like Matt Lauer, has one of those tall broad heads that does not take to baldness well. Matt Lauer completely lost his looks, in my opinion, when he lost his hair.
