Famous people of Ukrainian descent

Vera Farmiga is one of the major ones I can think of,, but I had no idea Liv Tyler had Ukrainian ancestry. Same with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Milla Jovovich was born in Ukraine and may speak the language, but I believe she's 100% ethnically Russian despite being culturally Ukrainian.

Ukraine's history is extremely complicated. My grandmother and great-grandmother were from Odesa, but they spoke Russian because the region was under USSR rule at the time; they also spoke German as my great-grandmother's ancestors were Black Sea Germans. My great-grandfather was from Odesa and died in the oblast during Nazi raids that took place there in WWII. I took a DNA test some years ago which came up as about 30% Ukrainian; my uncle also took a test and had a higher percentage of Ukrainian and a small amount of Ashkenazi Jewish. I know there were a high concentration of Jews in Ukraine before WWII; I believe Mila Kunis is almost 100% genetically Ashkenazi Jewish, while also culturally Ukrainian. Vera Farmiga, on the other hand, is solely of Ukrainian origin. I think lines are very blurry due to the extremely turbulent history there.

Most of western Ukraine was part of the Pale of Settlement, a region where Jews in the Russian Empire were forced to live. Life there was very harsh for Jews, and there were pogroms there after the assassination of one of the Russian tsars, so many Jews emigrated to the US from the 1880s until about 1920. Those who stayed and didn't disperse deeper into Russia after the revolution were mostly killed during the Holocaust. Most of the American Jews I know whose ancestors came from that part of Europe don't identify as Ukrainian, Belarussian, Lithuanian, Moldovan, or Polish, but simply know that their families lived in that region in the past. As others have mentioned, the borders were porous, and within the Ukrainian region are large pockets of Russian-speakers, Cossacks, Tatars, Germans, and a host of other minorities. During Stalin's reign, troublesome groups were shifted around the entire Soviet Union, mostly to get them far away from Moscow. But anyone from any of these groups could legitimately claim Ukrainian heritage, as well as the ethnically Ukrainian people.

This spills some light on the facial resemblance between Steven Tyler and my Ukrainain-born ex.

by Anonymousreply 17October 10, 2025 5:14 AM

Steven Tyler is a mix of mostly Italian and Ukrainian. He also has a small bit of African ancestry through one of his grandfathers. I've seen comments online attributing his and Liv's lips to their African ancestry, though that may be a stretch given they probably both have a marginal amount of African DNA, if any at all. Liv also has German ancestry from her mom. I consider Liv one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in my life.
