Tasteful Friends: JFK and Jackie's Federal style House in Georgetown

I'm a sucker for historic houses like this and look at that patio. Does the kitchen look small though?

Beautiful house - love those wooden floors. The kitchen is modest compared to the open concept kitchens of today but is appropriate for the style of the house. The garden area is well done and quite large.

The only drawback is the location - Georgetown is extremely compact and traffic/parking is a nightmare although the area has a interesting vibe and is a great place to people watch.

Stunning!

Jackie loved that house and tried to buy it back after the assassination. The owners said no, so Jackie settled for another Georgetown home.

What idiot painted it all white? What a waste of a gorgeous period home.

Off with their heads.

Very beautiful.

Gorgeous! And close to The Exorcist Steps!

R4 is right -- whoever painted the woodwork white should be shot, unless they're the same person who installed all the pot lights, in which case they should be hung, drawn, and quartered.

Photos are not showing up for me on iPad.

R4 couldn't have said it better. It's a gorgeous house but that white paint is so off putting.

I don’t think the white paint on the woodwork would look so bad if the walls were more colorful.

[quote] Does the kitchen look small though?

People who can afford that kind of house don't usually do a lot of cooking.

It's a terrific house. I used to walk by it often and it's one of the better in Georgetown -- and now it has the added distinction of among the least fucked up by alterations.

Excepting the floors, every bit of woodwork in that house was painted originally as was intended when built and typical of houses of the period of any level of prosperity (which thus one certainly was.)

There were no stained pine bookcases, nor about half of the stair trim (and the never painted mahogany railing), nor any other unpainted wood anywhere. It wasn't the style or tradition. The few instances of unpainted woodwork and doors in Photos 15, 16, 18 and some upstairs doors were all cleaned of their original paint in the 20thC. The blue-grey marble fireplaces on the ground floor are great (the ones upstairs that I see are replaced -- with not very good choices in the 20thC.)

I do agree the white painted walls in many rooms are boring, white painted walls contrasted with white painted woodwork, contrasted with white ceilings... It's furnished in the better sort of Washington Style, but nothing sone paint and better furnishings wouldn't fix instantly. The kitchen is a bit dated I suppose, but who cares? I like the look of the kitchen and it's perfectly functional for me; the bathrooms are okay as well. Architecturally I wouldn't change a thing except those third-rate chimneypieces in different styles upstairs.

The garden is a beauty and I like that bit of Georgetown. It's a rare house that I like and don't regret that it was butchered by later owners.

Shitty bathrooms

by Anonymousreply 12October 8, 2025 9:11 PM

The inside stairs probably creak.

Compared to the Trumps Jtge Kennedy’s had absolutely immaculate and refined taste. Of course it doesn’t hurt that they came from a family of millionaires.

by Anonymousreply 14October 8, 2025 9:20 PM

President Kennedy paid $80K for the house, c. 1957 (when he was still a senator). It's kind of a dump inside.
