Illegal crossings along U.S.-Mexico border plummet to lowest annual level since 1970

Politics Exclusive Illegal crossings along U.S.-Mexico border plummet to lowest annual level since 1970 By Camilo Montoya-Galvez Updated on: October 6, 2025 / 11:06 PM EDT / CBS News

Unlawful crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2025 plummeted to the lowest annual level since the early 1970s, amid the Trump administration's sweeping clampdown on illegal immigration, internal federal statistics obtained by CBS News show.

U.S. Border Patrol agents recorded nearly 238,000 apprehensions of migrants crossing the southern border illegally in fiscal year 2025, which began in October of last year and ended on Sept. 30, according to the preliminary Department of Homeland Security data, which has not been previously reported.

The number is the lowest annual tally recorded by Border Patrol since fiscal year 1970, when the agency reported roughly 202,000 apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border, historical figures indicate.

When you turn the US into a shithole, people don't want to come here

by Anonymousreply 1October 7, 2025 8:44 PM

Good job!

by Anonymousreply 2October 7, 2025 9:46 PM

R1, it amazes me that is the conclusion someone could come to.

by Anonymousreply 3October 7, 2025 9:51 PM

R3, why? It's true.

by Anonymousreply 4October 7, 2025 10:02 PM

[quote]When you turn the US into a shithole, people don't want to come here

In fact. ICE is doing them a FAVOR by sending them back.

by Anonymousreply 5October 7, 2025 10:10 PM

"it amazes me that is the conclusion someone could come to."

Would it amaze you to know several million Americans might be willing to leave this shithole country and never look back at its neanderthal, mouth breathing, knuckle dragging denizens and their fake jingoistic patriotism and their equally fake Christianity?

by Anonymousreply 6October 7, 2025 10:25 PM

The US is still paradise compared to Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 7October 7, 2025 10:27 PM

It seems like Democrats could be heartened by the concept that when the government leaders put their minds to it and put forth effort and money, that intractable problems can effectively be dealt with, without having to compromise. Sometimes, it really is as simple as, "you stop the inflow of illegals at the border by (literally) stopping the inflow of illegals at the border." No phone app, no numerical triggers needed, not even a new law required.

by Anonymousreply 8October 7, 2025 10:42 PM

R8, I think it was more like "Make a bunch of new, illegal laws, and have them rubber stamped by the paid-for supreme court." And it is also more like "Militarize America's cities, arrest people because they're brown, and build illegal prison camps for them." That's why the US is becoming a shithole, and that's why the republican solution has nothing to do with the security of the border, and everything to do with the final solution.

by Anonymousreply 9October 7, 2025 10:50 PM

Shoot! Less yummy foreskin to play with!

by Anonymousreply 10October 7, 2025 10:51 PM

r8, Republicans are making it harder for people to come here legally, it was never just about "the illegals"

Less immigration will shrink our economy

by Anonymousreply 11October 7, 2025 10:53 PM

Really Defacto? You should actually be thanking Joe Biden if this is such exciting news to you. Trump and his masked thugs aren’t doing anything magical, or even new.

This is the continuing result of policies adopted under Biden, as well as new Mexican policies.

R12 From that article: "The Border Patrol recorded 58,038 encounters with migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in August,"

"During Trump's first eight months in office, there have been fewer than 9,000 illegal crossings recorded each month, CBS reported." - BBC

by Anonymousreply 16October 7, 2025 11:51 PM

^ The first quote pertains to August 2024.

by Anonymousreply 17October 7, 2025 11:53 PM

Please explain the methodology to calculate these numbers. And who is doing the counting and reporting. And whether a Cheeto- stained Sharpie is involved.

by Anonymousreply 18October 7, 2025 11:58 PM

Of course border crossings are down.

As soon as Trump got reelected, Republican operatives stopped paying desperately poor people to make the trek to the US border.

by Anonymousreply 19October 8, 2025 12:06 AM

Illegal crossings are going to explode when the Trump regime starts to jail, deport or execute those who Trump decides on a whim have slighted him.

It'll just be the other way around. American people aspiring to live a better life in Mexico, a reverse stream of Dreamers. Then Mexico might even want to pay for that wall!

by Anonymousreply 20October 8, 2025 12:15 AM

Many more people were deported during Obama. Statistics and facts are easily manipulated. And they are doing a better job at it - because they have no scruples.

by Anonymousreply 21October 8, 2025 12:17 AM

This is good news.

by Anonymousreply 22October 8, 2025 12:28 AM

[quote]Many more people were deported during Obama.

And people were happy about it. Let's hope Trump reaches those numbers.

by Anonymousreply 23October 8, 2025 12:29 AM

R19 They never did it and I’m not a Republican and voted for Harris. Please explain the logistics and then provide the receipts.

Repeating shit that you just think or want to be true makes you seem like a MAGA.

by Anonymousreply 24October 8, 2025 12:30 AM

As soon as I'm able to locate the shoeboxes of receipts Republicans have laying around marked "illegal payoff receipts" that will make them so much easier for nosy investigators to track them down I'll forward those receipts to you SAP. You wait and hold your breath the entire time. Those receipts will appear before you croak.

You really are the dumb ass ma fucking asshole people around here say you are.

We know why border crossing are down.

US fascism is SUCH a success.

Just wait to see what they're going to do to blue US cities!

by Anonymousreply 29October 8, 2025 1:35 AM

R3, IT’S TRUE! why is tourism likewise down, jack wad?

by Anonymousreply 30October 8, 2025 1:37 AM

It’s actually Biden who brought the numbers down dramatically near the end of his term.

As usual, Trump is taking all the credit

by Anonymousreply 31October 8, 2025 2:59 AM

Maybe AI will perform the work only immigrants were willing to do in this country.

Because the Rethuglians stopped paying 'coyotes' to transport them to 20 miles south of the Border. Where FOX News would be waiting to film the 'caravans'.

by Anonymousreply 34October 8, 2025 3:16 AM

What are the numbers for the real immigration problem. the people who simply overstay their visas?

by Anonymousreply 35October 8, 2025 4:59 AM

They can say whatever they want.

by Anonymousreply 36October 8, 2025 6:49 AM

If it were Democrats, everyone would cheer.

Trump scaring off the illegals is statistically approved by both Democrats and Republicans as polls always show no one wants illegals here except radical white suburban left.

Here’s what SCARY

The jump of illegals with the next Democratic President. If Republicans can maintain illegals staying away, that’s going to be a huge threat to the Democratic Party.

When Biden became President, it shot up.

So 2028’s GOP campaign will simply be that talking point. Which is bad for Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 37October 8, 2025 7:16 AM

Surrrre....and it's absolutely noticeable. I walk out of my house and say, "Border crossings must be down." MEANWHILE, this weekend in Dallas, like...20 people got shot.

R37 Oh, I think once people's health insurance gets fucked-up, 2028's DEM campaign will simply be THAT talking point. Which is bad for ReTrumplicans.

by Anonymousreply 38October 8, 2025 10:28 AM

Texas is and always has been a cesspool

by Anonymousreply 39October 8, 2025 10:57 AM

[quote] What are the numbers for the real immigration problem. the people who simply overstay their visas?

People overstaying their visa is NOT “the real immigration problem “. Over staying a visa cannot be compared to an illegal border crossing.

by Anonymousreply 40October 8, 2025 11:38 AM

And food is rotting in the fields and our tourism industry is dying

by Anonymousreply 41October 8, 2025 11:51 AM

Four of the 9/11 terrorists were here because they overstayed their visas, r40. None of the nineteen entered the country illegally.

by Anonymousreply 42October 8, 2025 11:54 AM

Christ, why is everyone so stupid?

America needs to admit FOUR legal immigrants per each single Boomer drawing Social Security in order to keep the system solvent.

Ironically, we would only need to admit TWO “illegal” immigrants to do the same, since they don’t withdrawal the benefits for the taxes they pay.

And yes, they pay the same taxes you do when they work in fields and factories.

It’s not a question of shutting the border down. Or opening it wide. It’s a question of how many immigrants do we need? And are we better off economically if they arrive legally or not?

But by all means, keep up the zero sum debate. It’s been so productive for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 43October 8, 2025 12:00 PM

R42 it is absurd using them as an example. In no way can overstaying a visa be compared to entering the country illegally. They are two different things. Entering the country illegally is a federal crime.

by Anonymousreply 44October 8, 2025 12:05 PM

You can say it’s absurd all you want. Overstayed visas gave us the worst terrorist attack in American history. Federal crime or not, entering the country illegally has mostly given us cheap labor.

by Anonymousreply 45October 8, 2025 12:11 PM

Right. We want cheap labor for some and a 20$ minimum wage for others…

by Anonymousreply 46October 8, 2025 12:14 PM

Just like we dramatically lowered the number of alien vermin in OUR homeland!

Gute Arbeit, meine Kameraden!

by Anonymousreply 47October 8, 2025 12:14 PM

List the countries that anyone can enter illegally and expect to live without consequences.

by Anonymousreply 48October 8, 2025 12:24 PM

I see Bari Weiss has already started her new job at CBS.

by Anonymousreply 49October 8, 2025 12:29 PM

They've probably sopped patrolling the border entirely.

by Anonymousreply 50October 8, 2025 12:45 PM

R49 exactly. Post R45 is all for exploiting labor. Typical.

by Anonymousreply 51October 8, 2025 12:46 PM

Let's go ask the border farmers.

by Anonymousreply 52October 8, 2025 12:47 PM

Right, and you two are all terrorism. Typical.

by Anonymousreply 53October 8, 2025 12:47 PM

No answer to post R48?

by Anonymousreply 54October 8, 2025 12:52 PM

No answer because it ignores that many are described as illegal, but have legal status as DACA, TPS, or asylum seekers. Many of those have crossed the country illlegally but have legal status. So, the answer would start with the US.

by Anonymousreply 55October 8, 2025 2:10 PM

[quote]Entering the country illegally is a federal crime.

And how is overstaying a visa not a federal crime? I guess all those ICE agents going after immigrants based on visa records are just making it up.

BTW, about 40% of undocumented immigrants arrived here on a visa (to answer my own question).

by Anonymousreply 56October 8, 2025 3:15 PM

R56 The law is the law: overstaying a visa is not a federal crime. It is a civil violation.

by Anonymousreply 57October 8, 2025 4:27 PM

[quote] about 40% of undocumented immigrants arrived here on a visa (to answer my own question).

Bullshit. If you come over on a visa you are documented.

by Anonymousreply 58October 8, 2025 4:29 PM

Maybe children begging and selling candy on the NYC subway will finally be a thing of the past.

by Anonymousreply 59October 8, 2025 4:48 PM

Democrats really sabotaged themselves on the U.S.–Mexico border issue last election — especially with their messaging. There was a bipartisan Senate agreement, led in part by Oklahoma Republicans, that could have shown progress, but Trump torpedoed it, and Democrats failed to communicate that clearly to voters. They missed the chance to pin the blame where it belonged. Then you had voices like AOC saying the border should be open to everyone and that crossing without documentation should just result in a ticket — comments that made it look like the party had no serious border policy.

Meanwhile, in cities like New York, billions were spent on hotels, debit cards, and healthcare for arriving migrants. Everyone knows that many were enrolled in local Medicaid-managed plans like Fidelis Care. So when Republicans claim that undocumented migrants are getting Medicaid, it wouldn’t hurt for Congress to invite the CEO of Fidelis Care to explain exactly how those enrollments are happening.

by Anonymousreply 60October 8, 2025 5:29 PM

[quote]They missed the chance to pin the blame where it belonged.

The blame belonged with the Biden administration.

by Anonymousreply 61October 8, 2025 5:37 PM

"Maybe children begging and selling candy on the NYC subway will finally be a thing of the past."

Children have been begging and selling trinkets/candy on the NYC subway since the subways first started. It isn't just some recent phenomena that you seem to think.

That you seem to think otherwise denotes a tremendous lack of knowledge of history on your part. Did you ever hear of the Depression?

by Anonymousreply 62October 8, 2025 5:45 PM

[quote]Children have been begging and selling trinkets/candy on the NYC subway since the subways first started. It isn't just some recent phenomena that you seem to think.

You're wrong about that.

And any long time NYer will tell you so.

Even the subway system during the 1970s dark days of bankrupt NYC did not have children begging on the subway.

by Anonymousreply 63October 8, 2025 5:49 PM

One of the major reasons our economy did so much better that the rest of the world’s economies during and after COVID was the fact that we let in so many immigrants during that time. The economy was buzzing thanks to them.

by Anonymousreply 64October 8, 2025 6:17 PM

[Quote] Maybe children begging and selling candy on the NYC subway will finally be a thing of the past.

It could be a thing of the past if southern states didn’t ship the undocumented to NYC

by Anonymousreply 65October 8, 2025 6:17 PM

[Quote] Then you had voices like AOC saying the border should be open to everyone and that crossing without documentation should just result in a ticket

Um, AOC never said either of those things.

It just goes to show that, no matter what the Dems say, the GOP will twist it and claim the Dems said something worse

by Anonymousreply 66October 8, 2025 6:21 PM

Link please, R63.

Otherwise, you're just pulling shit out of your prolapsed hole.

by Anonymousreply 67October 8, 2025 6:21 PM

Or if asylum seekers could work. They have to wait five months before they can apply for a work permit. The courts are backlogged, so they can’t get resolution for years. Which is why there were efforts to give them food and housing assistance, and also children selling candy.

I always buy lemonade (that I don’t drinkf from entrepreneurial kids in the neighborhood. And I always buy candy (that I don’t take) on the subway from kids who are probably hungry.

by Anonymousreply 68October 8, 2025 6:22 PM

[Quote] The blame belonged with the Biden administration.

Biden is the one who actually brought the numbers down dramatically. He actually followed the law—if someone claims asylum, the law requires we follow a certain legal process.

by Anonymousreply 69October 8, 2025 6:23 PM

[Quote] Bullshit. If you come over on a visa you are documented.

Wow, it’s amazing that we’re arguing with people who don’t even understand the basic laws around immigration.

If you come on a visa (tourist, student, etc) but stay after that visa expires, you are now undocumented.

by Anonymousreply 70October 8, 2025 6:25 PM

[Quote] The law is the law: overstaying a visa is not a federal crime. It is a civil violation.

And it’s at the level of a parking ticket

[Quote] Everyone knows that many were enrolled in local Medicaid-managed plans like Fidelis Care. So when Republicans claim that undocumented migrants are getting Medicaid, it wouldn’t hurt for Congress to invite the CEO of Fidelis Care to explain exactly how those enrollments are happening.

The GOP is banking on American confusion about the various legal statuses of immigrants.

If one is claiming asylum, he will get some cash benefits and will, temporarily, be allowed to use Medicaid. They are, by legal definition, LEGAL immigrants until their cases are seen by an immigration judge who will make the ultimate decision .

by Anonymousreply 72October 8, 2025 6:29 PM

[Quote] [R12] Yeah, during Biden's last 6 months in office he decided to do something. Bravo

MAGAs have a problem with math it seems. Since when is 2023 “the last six months in office, Defacto.”

Anyway, sounds like typical MAGA deflection. It was Biden who changed to policies and the resulting decline in illegal entry, NOT Trump.

Nice work getting your six FF sock puppets to WW your deflectin though. Very convincing. 🤭

by Anonymousreply 73October 8, 2025 6:32 PM

Yes r16, do you know how policies take effect over time? Apparently not.

Ok Defacto, tell us what additional policies Trump put in place besides a bunch of meaningless executive orders. Be specific and show how any of his hand waving resulted directly in lower numbers than the declining curve after Biden out tougher laws in place.

Because the curve from Oct 23 to today looks pretty smooth to me.

Oh and don’t cite the Trump regime’s bullshit propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 74October 8, 2025 6:39 PM

[Quote] Yeah, during Biden's last 6 months in office he decided to do something. Bravo

Actually Biden pushed Congress to do its job. Congress was on the verge of passing immigration reform when Trump sabotaged it.

Then Biden did what he could with his executive powers.

by Anonymousreply 75October 8, 2025 6:41 PM

[quote]If you come on a visa (tourist, student, etc) but stay after that visa expires, you are now undocumented.

You're wrong. And you're really rather stupid.

If you have a visa you are DOCUMENTED.

First of all, it means you have a passport with all of your identifying info. You cannot get a visa to enter the US without a passport.

In order to get a visa, you MUST file a DS-160 form which asks: "detailed personal, travel, and background information to assess an applicant's eligibility for a U.S. visa, including: personal details (name, passport info, address), travel plans (purpose, dates, U.S. stay), past U.S. travel history, work and education history, family information, security questions, and social media identifiers. You also need to upload a digital photograph that meets specific requirements."

Got it now, dope?

by Anonymousreply 76October 8, 2025 7:17 PM

Cont: And if you overstay your visa, you are in the US illegally, but you are registered with register with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

There is no equivalency with an undocumented person entering illegally.

by Anonymousreply 77October 8, 2025 7:23 PM

[quote]Then Biden did what he could with his executive powers.

Biden could have used his executive powers from day one.

by Anonymousreply 78October 8, 2025 7:25 PM

The worrying thing about this is that future Republican presidential candidates will say, truthfully, that if a Democratic is elected president immigrants will again start streaming over the border. And people will vote Republican because they’ve convinced themselves that immigration is the worst thing imaginable.

I hate how cruel my country has become.

by Anonymousreply 82October 8, 2025 7:50 PM

Good

by Anonymousreply 83October 8, 2025 7:51 PM

I live in an area with plenty of (presumably) illegal migrants. Never had anything but a positive experience, which is more than I can say for the (presumable) natives. I don’t even know anyone who has been negatively affected by immigrants, so this level of bitterness and resentment is baffling.

by Anonymousreply 84October 8, 2025 10:17 PM
