Anyone watching MAIGRET on Masterpiece Mystery ? It's a new series which started last night on PBS. Very good so far. Can't not like a show that starts with the lead actor Benjamin Wainwright getting out of bed with just is black underwear on/ More of Benjamin Wainwright, please !
Anyone watching PBS' new Masterpiece Mystery "Maigret" ?

I agree, OP. It's off to a good start. Wainwright is beautiful. I also find the cop who chafes under his command to be quite hunky. Nice guns on him. Would love to see him in black briefs.

R1 Agree - how did I forget him ?
R2 Thanks for posting that !

Why use the Maigret name? It’s nothing like Maigret from the books. It feels cheaply made, like all the actors are dubbed into English. The connections he makes are tenuous (hat, girlfriend, magazine, apt) but on the other hand, the show moves briskly. Low effort.

Previous Maigrets on screen were not pretty boys; they were bulky and plug-ugly: Rupert Davies and Michael Gambon (TV) Pierre Renoir, Harry Baur, Jean Gabin, Gerard Depardieu, and Charles Laughton (film).

Just be thankful they didn't try to make Maigret a disabled Blasian transgender midget.

I don't want a sexy Inspector Maigret, any more than i want a sexy Miss Marple.
I'm not that starved for eye candy.

I quite like it and why not have a hunky detective!!!
A prequel to Miss Marple might be interesting. We get flashes of her supposed WWI soldier boy love of her life in one set of the TV shows. I don't recall any of that from the novels, though.

PBS Passport is definitely the best streaming bargain out there.

R7 - We do already, from the 1980's.

To R9- I totally agree with you on PBS Passport. It is a great deal.
LOVE the streaming shows, watching 12 seasons of Agatha Christie's Poirot.

I don’t think it is dubbed. I think it’s made in English. They did something similar with a series about a Dutch detective. Just ignored the fact that everyone was speaking English and didn’t even attempt appropriate accents.
Takes me right out of the drama.

All-British cast playing French people. Budapest standing in for Paris.
C'est inauthentique!

Not dubbed

I said cheap, “like all the characters are dubbed”. No they are not dubbed but they might as well be. Bargain basement series. The only actor I recognized is the inspector who is also on Father Brown. They must have to pay a fee to use the Maigret name so why bother if they’re just going to change everything?

It took a minute to remember how I knew the actress who plays Mrs. Maigret - Stefanie Martini who portrayed the young Jane Tennison in the "Prime Suspect" prequel.
You can't beat PBS Passport! I watched the first four "Maigret" episodes last night and will continue tonight. Good series that pulled me in within the first 20 minutes. Sorry I can't say the same for "The Gold."

Blew through all 6 episodes today. Thought it was quite good and enjoyable. Gets a recommend from me.
I do wish they had just adjusted the stories to be in London. “The Agency” did the same with the stories from “The Bureau” and it worked quite well and took away the awkwardness of all the English being spoken in Paris.

I love PBS Passport. They have great German and French series. I'm in total lust for Samuel Le Bihan, who plays Alex Hugo in "Mountain Detective."

Can you stream Passport on your SmartTV? I have a Samsung SmartTV and don't see the Passport app on it. Unless it shows up when one becomes a member of PBS (which I will gladly do) ?

I have PBS on my Samsung smart TV. You have to search to find it in Apps. I missed it the first time I tried.

It’s a good show, not great, but it’s not Maigret.
The actor is miscast and I prefer to have it take place in the same timeframe as the novels. It’s also obviously not filmed in Paris.
Maigret is middle aged, portly and more of a hard boiled detective, not a slick, fit, hot young dude. I wish they were more faithful to the source material.
I feel the same way about the new Lynley series on Britbox (or Acorn, I can’t remember).
The only remake of an old series that kept to the original spirit of the series and books while modernizing it a little is Dalgleish. That series is excellent, I hope there are more seasons.
