One with a bookshelf headboard.
Although I don't like the color on this, I do like the height of the headboard.
What sort of bedframe do you have? Where is a good place to buy and for how much?

Ideally I'd like something like this in this color but this particular model on Amazon has some bad reviews and it is made in china.

I had one once. It wasn’t attached to the bed frame, it straddled it so the head of the bed slid into it. It was wood with a shelf and it was very convenient. Later I used it as a console table in a hallway. So you might want to explore that option. Mine was like a finished piece of furniture, not like planks of wood nailed together and stained.

OP, get a proper headboard and bed frame from a furniture store, something actually made from wood and not in China.

I bought a metal platform bedframe on Amazon for $150. It's pretty sturdy. I've had pretty good luck buying furniture on Amazon.

Hire a carpenter or cabinet maker, that way you can get exactly what you want. Might even be cheaper in the long run.
Contact some Amish craftsmen if there are some in your area(PA, IN, etc) They do good work for a fair price.
Or you can go the ol' bricks and boards route.

If you're looking to do things on the cheap, OP, there's good-old IKEA.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 5, 2025 7:14 PM |
Go into the woods, find a tree and chop it down. You might want to hire a lumberjack for that part. Then instead of an Amish guy, fly over a Japanese master carpenter to build your dream headboard. Japanese people are tiny, so you can probably store him in a shed at night when he's done working.

R3 What furniture store do you suggest? Everything is made in China these days.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 5, 2025 7:36 PM |
Everything is not made in China. Ethan Allen, Stickley, and Maiden Home are three companies where the furniture is not made in China. And if you're really interested, you can see a curated list of all furniture companies with furniture not made in China on the platform Say No To China 2025.

Furniture is all disposable today, most furniture chains all import the crap from China. The only places that use real wood anymore are expensive options like Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware, etc. If I can only afford the disposable options, I would prefer to go in person and see it for myself in the furniture store before I buy anyways.

Yeah, R10, they are expensive because they're better. OP didn't specify how much they're willing to spend.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 5, 2025 8:27 PM |
Room and Board is not made in China, either.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 5, 2025 8:30 PM |
Milk crates, zip ties and spray paint is all you need.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 5, 2025 9:28 PM |
R11 $400 or less

Facebook marketplace for a solid vintage one.

r6 Ikea is fine for bed frames but stay away from the coil mattresses, their quality has gone to hell now.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 6, 2025 1:22 AM |
OP only wants to spend $400, so IKEA might be the way to go.

I have an old black iron bed frame, in the city place, barely fits a queen.
I also have a big old king bed with 1 foot deep compartments in the headboard at the country house. It lengthens the bed in unnecessary ways . Its a nice piece of pine furniture so i put it in another bedroom.
Also it wobbled like crazy during sex. I remember a time when Husband and I placed our glasses of Bordeaux on the top and we shook the bed so vigorously that we ended up with red wine all over us. We tried to lick it off but there was a lot.
I need a headboard of some kind to contain my need for many pillows. Husband too. Three each. I have done without and they all fall between the bed and the wall.
We don't even make the bed unless someone is coming over. We change the sheets etc once a week.

Heywood-Wakefield made a headboard something like this. I think it was only made for a full-size bed. It wasn't particularly sturdy, and sex was nearly impossible. I was always worried about breaking the bed. Eventually I sold it.

You can actually submit a picture like this (maybe with some additional comments) to one of the AI programs (ChatGPT, etc.) and it will find you some options.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 6, 2025 3:06 AM |
Heywood-Wakefield looks like dorm room furniture.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 6, 2025 3:08 AM |
It is not a look I like. I would rather have bookshelves at the other end of my bedroom.
and at my height losing mattress length is stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 6, 2025 3:37 AM |
I'd like a cushy one at the head. What do i care about the rest of it as long it doesn't collapse.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 6, 2025 3:43 AM |
OP definitely does not live in California. Rule number one is to NOT to put anything above your bed that can fall on your head and kill you.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 6, 2025 3:56 AM |
My dorm was Brutalist in style. Heywood-Wakefield would have provided a touch of warmth. Seriously though, living in such a modern environment was an absolute dream after growing up in my mother’s Fauxlonial hellscape.

R16 are all IKEA mattresses shit now? I was going to buy one for my sister when she comes to stay for a few weeks

[quote]Say No To China 2025
Thank you for that solid tip R9! Great site, its actually called No To China 2025, linked below. Covers everything from dashcams and smartphones to backpacks and furniture, and cheekily has header pictures for some categories of Xi Jinping with Winnie the Poo or with Winnie the Poo merch - he absolutely HATES that

Do bookshelf headboards look too juvenile? What are your thoughts?

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
