Smashing Machine and One Battle After Another- Box Office and Oscars
I find it interesting that both films were utterly trounced by Taylor Swift.
Smashing Machine outright BOMBED- frankly I am glad as its well known that The fucking Rock is late as fuck all the time to every fucking set he works on- Doesn't give a FUCK about anyone and is overindulged. So fuck him.
I really thought that OBAA would go to Oscar glory, but its box office is very disappointing.
I wonder what other films may come along and get Box office and Oscar recognition-
I've said all long that Sinners does not have a fucking chance to win-- I'm starting to rethink that- Wasn't it a massive hit?

Everything about The Smashing Machine looks like Oscar bait to me. Not interested. I am pleasantly surprised to see that the micro-budget indie horror movie "Good Boy" (about a dog who moves with his owner into a haunted house) made nearly a million bucks over the weekend.

OBAA has grossed$100M WW in one week. Not saying it will make back its cost, but it's definitely not a flop. The Smashing Machine, however, is clearly DOA. Another flop for Emily Blunt after The Fall Guy.

You can’t demand the salary he demands and wait every few years to make a critically acclaimed box office bomb and expect to continue that way.

Since when does box office have anything to do with the Oscars?
Anora, last year's winner, grossed like $50m. Which is an art house hit and it made a profit but....not exactly a blockbuster.
One Battle After Another is going to get some awards attention. PT Anderson is ripe for a win.
Smashing Machine...eh. There's a lot of arthouse movies still to be released including films with much bigger buzz.

Thought “One Battle After Another” was okay but grossly overrated by the critics, so an inevitable drop in box office will not be a surprise.
Have no interest in an Oscar vehicle for The Rock, the idea that he is adored or that everyone is pulling for him is ridiculous.
Thought the trailer for the Springsteen film with Jeremy Allen White is the dullest trailer I’ve been this year so far (rivaling the boring trailer for “History of Sound”). White sits around looking tense in a recording studio, angsting about writing his drastic departure Nebraska. Not exactly a commercial album, not exactly a commercial film idea.
Very interested in “Good Boy.” Can someone tell me if the dog dies? If he does I’m not going. Does the dog owner die? I gather the plot turns on a terminally ill man moving into an isolated house with his dog.

Love Bruce, but only diehard Springsteen fans will be interested in seeing this movie. Nebraska isn't one of his "commercial" albums, was very much a moody, independent release between The River and BitUSA.
At least A Complete Unknown was about a well-known phase of Dylan's career. And included strong sub-stories about other artists like Baez and Pete Seeger.

PTA will win Best Director, but I don't see it winning for Best Picture, because Warners will lose a lot of money on it. Watch the Oscar hype fade once Hollywood realizes how much money it lost. Same with The Rock's Oscar hopes.
The budget for One Battle After Another is reported to range from $140M to $175M. Let’s assume it’s at the lower end, a figure the trade seems to be accepting. That would put the film’s break-even point at roughly $350M—a target it is unlikely to reach. Current projections estimate its total box office will finish around $200–$210M.

R38, PTA is well on his way to becoming the Susan Lucci of the film world: he's won ZERO Oscars, out of 11 nominations total. (His films' actors have generally fared better.) He should've won, well, everything for "There Will Be Blood," but OBAA is already his second most acclaimed film, and acting noms are a shoo-in for Leo, Benicio, Sean Penn and the child actor whose parents must hate her: Chase Infiniti. ("The Other Two" called, and ChaseDreams would like his schtick back.) I'm sure OBAA will get a ton of nominations, but let's see how the upcoming Cannes/TIFF Oscar bait performs at the BO.
As per usual, I don't get DLer hate for Emily Blunt aside from the all-too-obvious jealous-bitches angle – yes, we all know you wanna fuck John Krasinski, but she's the only one riding THAT cock – and all the assholes whining that "a wrestling movie" is too "lightweight" for Academy considerations: yes, that's what they used to say about boxing movies. Or at least they did until "Rocky" – Stallone's acting AND screenwriting debut – scored 10 Oscar noms.
In other words: unclench, cunts. Even "dumb jocks" can make solid movies, plus most of them are *far* smarter than you think. (And likely smarter than you or I am.)
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 6, 2025 5:46 PM

OBAA is on its way to being considered a hit, especially when you add in the global box office, and the longevity it's likely to have based on word-of-mouth. And it will absolutely be nominated for Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actor (Penn, though Del Toro may also sneak in).
Are you one of the naysayers who was claiming in week one or two that SINNERS was a flop and would soon be forgotten? I've not forgotten that stupidity, and the film hasn't been forgotten either. It will be nominated for a bevy of Oscars as well.
But from what I'm hearing, Hamnet is the forerunner, and Jessie Buckley an almost certain win for Best Actress.

Any movie about race cars. I think 'Cars', a cartoon, is the only one to actually be hugely successful. The rest all earn a buck or two then wither on the vine because only 40 to 75 year old rich men get a boner for race cars and they don't go to the movies.

Hopefully, this year's awards season will wake up and kill some annoying trends:
Bio-pics, especially musician/singer bio-pics as awards bait (the dumb Springsteen movie)
Pop corn actors getting "serious" and snagging noms/awards (the Rock)
Aging stars desperate for yet another nom/award (George Clooney/Julia Roberts)
Beating a dead horse to snag noms/awards (Wicked 2...if this gets much attention it's because Universal bribed people)
Trying to thrust certain rising stars into award winners even though no one has actually seen the film (Timotay in Marty Supreme)

Sean Penn deserves the Oscar for his role in OBAA. Hands down the best thing he's done in years. I came close to feeling bad for him but his character got what he deserved. And that hair style, wow. He really milked it for its comedic appearance. I thought OBAA was an exceptional film and it leaned into 70's bold filmmaking. The chase sequence was a real nail biter (So glad I saw it at the IMAX). It really is a film for the moment and the theater was full on discount Tuesdays so I hope word of mouth gets more people to see it. Sinners has been the movie of the year, but the industry does not want to go out of its way to reward it because it made it's impact early in the year. It makes the industry look bad. So they bend over backwards for a bunch of late releases (mainly Caucasian fueled) so that they can pretend it's more of a contest.

Ping-pong does not seem promising as a subject for a commercial film, but putting Chalamet in the lead was a shrewd choice after his recent success and Oscar nomination for “A Complete Unknown.”

R20 and 22: Really? You don't understand why people don't like/hate Blunt/Paltrow/Hathaway/Swift/Spears?
Let's break it down...they are successful women. That's a lot of it.
But, also...
Blunt and Hathaway both come off as phony and disingenuous in interviews; Blunt especially has a problem with both having a bit of a cunt face and tone. Both have talent as actresses but limited range...Blunt is best at playing bitches and Hathaway is best a playing some variation of "princess".
Paltrow speaks for herself...I mean, GOOP. Very entitled and snotty. She can be a good actress given the right role but not a huge range other than "blonde" and "snide".
Taylor Swift also suffers from a serious case of Cunt Face. If she were only an actress, she'd only get cast as the Mean Girl in films. There's also the fact her music is derivitive and shallow and inexplicably popular, but it's mostly with the young and they have no taste. She's a highly manipulative artist and media presence.
Poor Britney is nuts. She needs locked up. She was a fun, totally manufactured pop star (who can't actually sing) with terrific pop songs, unlike Taylor and her dreadful dirges.
I think that about sums it up.

R54 "It’s weird the Oscars hype movies no one wants to watch. I guess they do help make a profit for indie films but it’s also what’s killing their ratings and relevance."
The Oscars, and most film awards in general, are about awarding excellence...not popularity. If that's what you want, then watch the People's Golden Global Choice Awards.
"Indie films" now is a term we use meaning "quality prestige films" and those actually used to be made by the major film studios. They mostly stopped making that kind of film in order to only make pop corn movies. And, there's nothing wrong with pop corn movies but they're mostly not very deep, if not quite shallow. But, both Sinners and One Battle After Another are, at heart, pop corn movies so you can have both. And, both of those films will get Oscar nominations and probably win some.
And, indie films that have an actual cinema release that then get awards attention will make more money long run...the cinema release/critical success is good marketing that gives a film a longer longevity. Even for bigger films...One Battle After Another may not make its money back on its original theatrical run but it's also going to do well in pay per view/rentals then streaming and will have legs for decades.

R62 The Fall Guy was a flop, at least in its original release. It probably did ok on pay per view/rentals but even if it grossed a $100m there, it would still be disappointing for Ryan Gosling action film.

R95- I will revisit it. I did not stop watching because of Timothy- (And one of my favorite films of all time is Inside Lllewyn Davis) I found it depressing I was not into it- it may have been my mood- and I have never been a major Dillon fan- minus is songwriting)

Whenever The Rock announced that he was presidential material and was serious about it, I knew we had lost him to Hollywood forever.
Not to derail the thread because I think Taylor Swift is just as bad in her own way.

All performers owe the public is a good performance. If they're miserable in real life who cares. You're not their friend and you will never be. Maybe if you served them in a restaurant and their tip was shit, I would understand the hatred. Otherwise, just judge them on their acting skills. Everybody doesn't have to be nice.

GOOP is a nepo baby who got lucky. There isn't a single performance of hers where I think another blonde actress couldn't have done it better.

And, ridiculous since Timotay comes from a huge world of privilege. And, he broke through as a star by the time he was 20 so he didn't exactly toil away for years, scrambling for work.

Yes and no.
The reason that they pull crap in both professional and personal situations is that they have the power that comes from being successful. Whether it's The Rock always being late and holding up productions or JLo being, well, JLo, they can behave that way because their success prompts people in power to forgive their trespasses.
However, if audiences, i.e., the people who spend money to watch them, decide they're not worth supporting because of their behavior, then their power diminishes and they're forced to behave like decent people. Do you think The Rock was a jackass on the sets of his early films?

So the Oscars only hype movies that no one wants to watch? In the past three years, these wildly unpopular movies have all won Oscars:
Barbie
Dune (both parts)
Wicked (with more to come)
The Substance
Conclave
Oppenheimer
Godzilla Minus One
Poor Things
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Avatar: The Way of Water
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Top Gun: Maverick
And these are only the ones that actually WON an Oscar or two. Or more.

I am not a Leo fan, but I thought he was great in OBAA. I would not be surprised if he takes it, he is very good in the movie. Sean Penn might win but I would love for Benicio to win, he is perfection in the movie.

You couldn’t be more disingenuous, R114.
The Substance
Conclave
Godzilla Minus One
Poor Things
Everything Everywhere All At Once
None of these made much money. At all. These were not blockbusters are anything near that orbit.
And the Oscars, other than “EEAAO” and “Poor Things,” were mostly for technical categories that sadly receive little to no attention.
So the accusation made that movies that resonate strongly with the box office and audiences don’t win major Oscar’s still stands.

Last year’s “Anora” sweep aged poorly 10 minutes after the ceremony. Then there’s “Coda,” “Nomadland,” even “Parasite.” Even “Green Book” was instantly forgotten.
No one saw these films. Some are barely remembered a few years later. “Oppenheimer” was the exception, not the rule.

R116 "None of these made much money"
Godzilla Minus One and Everything Everywhere All At Once made 10x the money they cost. Conclave 5x, The Substance 4x, Poor Things 3x.
I guess you have a very unique definition of making a lot of money.

R117 Parasite made $258.1 million on a $11.4 million budget. But you are right, no one saw these movies. Money just fell from the sky.

It seems in the last 25 years the Oscars didn't care about box office. Big budget bombs can still get noms but they will have a more difficult path for a win (i.e. Killers of the Flower Moon). Conversely, The Hurt Locker was a flop and it won over the biggest box office success of all time Avatar.

DiCaprio’s performance was nothing special in my view, and I was expecting to see something after the raves. Same with del Toro — he was sweet but drops out of the movie, which was stolen by Sean Penn and a fierce Teyana Taylor. That mitigates against Oscar noms for DiCaprio or del Toro unless it’s a weak year for performances.

Teyana Taylor was hand-picked by Dionne Warwick to play her in her upcoming biopic.

R125, I loved DiCaprio's performance, and I've never really gone crazy for him as an actor like many people do. The Revenant was an endurance test, not a performance, and he wasn't any good in Killers of the Flower Moon. He's very funny One Battle, especially the scenes where he gets frustrated over not remembering the time. If the movie is winning Best Picture, and I think it is, he should have no trouble getting nominated, especially considering the competition.
DiCaprio's competition this year is basically Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan and then after that, no one else has even a realistic shot at winning (Jesse Plemmons for Bugonoia, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, among others). Leo is not going to lose out to any of those, let alone the many flops this season like Dwayne Johnson and George Clooney.

I feel the same way, unless they are bigots, or MAGA, which usually go hand in hand. Otherwise, I couldn't care less if they are divas, or difficult on set, or refuse to sign autographs, or beat their kids with wire hangars.
I don't care how difficult Streisand, Dunaway, Lucille Ball, Brando, Bette Davis, or Joan Crawford were in real life.
