Gross' question was completely appropriate. Lewinsky was naive, but also willful and spoiled. The question revealed that, which Lewinsky could not face.

In her retrospective, Gross is very apologetic about the incident, yet she was rights. She mentions Lewinsky's legal bills, etc., which are nonsense. She had the internship because her family was rich. Ditto good legal representation and a good book deal. Clinton bused his position, regardless of what we think about her ambitions and consent. Linda Tripp took advantage of her as did Ken Starr. Yet, these coexist with her willfulness and privilege, as well as her naiveite. If Gross didn't ask that question, someone else would have, and probably more tactlessly. The book was an exercise in exhibitionism, like all of her subsequent vehicles. If she was just a nice girl from Beverly Hills, she would have married a mogul or a plastic surgeon and perhaps dabbled in charity work in relative obscurity--she wasn't and she was naive enough to think other people would think so.
