Hey NYers: Why does every hate Eric Adams?

I know about the Turkey corruption scandal.

It otherwise, why does everyone in NYC seem to hate Eric Adams as mayor?

by Anonymousreply 24October 5, 2025 12:08 PM

NYC always hates their Mayors.

by Anonymousreply 1October 4, 2025 3:12 PM

I'm a New Yorker and I don't get the hate. Crime is at historic lows, student test scores are up, certain sectors of the economy are coming back to pre-pandemic levels. We're going to fuck it all up in four weeks when we vote in that communist theater kid with no experience.

by Anonymousreply 2October 4, 2025 3:12 PM

Sure he's a little corrupt and a Trump lover but it's not like he's DeBlasio.

by Anonymousreply 3October 4, 2025 3:15 PM

There's no "otherwise." He's corrupt, which is why everyone hates him.

by Anonymousreply 4October 4, 2025 3:17 PM

Finding a job in NYC is fucking *hard right now. Everything is so much more expensive than it was even three years ago. Plus he's an embarrassing buffoon.

The mixture of terror and contempt that Mamdani elicits from reactionary centrists and right-wingers is reason enough to welcome him.

by Anonymousreply 5October 4, 2025 3:19 PM

When he was elected, Adams lived in a 22nd floor co-owned apartment with girlfriend in Fort Lee, New Jersey. As a cop, never did Foot Patrol. Had office job until Captain, through political connections. Never ran a precinct. At least five of his NYPD appointees had to resign for bibery and sexual accusations by female officers. He and deBlasio claim they were voted in by 78% majority , but only 25% of registered voters bothered to cast their ballots.

by Anonymousreply 6October 4, 2025 3:23 PM

What the hell is a "reactionary centrist"? If you're a centrist, you're therefore not reactionary.

by Anonymousreply 7October 4, 2025 3:27 PM

Blame Giuliani and Bloomberg for the city getting expensive. The ones who actually implemented the policies that have made the city unaffordable to anyone who isn't a trust fund baby.

Adams may be corrupt, but the two worst mayors the city has had are Giuliani and Bloomberg by far. Just awful. DeBlasio was giving shit because he didn't bow to the NYPD and kiss their rings.

Dinkins was always better than people gave him credit for.

Koch sucked. As a mayor and in his personal life if you know what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 8October 4, 2025 5:18 PM

Does NYC ALWAYS love it's criminal electeds?

by Anonymousreply 9October 4, 2025 5:26 PM

[Quote] Everything is so much more expensive than it was even three years ago.

New York isn't the only place where things got expensive after the pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 10October 4, 2025 5:30 PM

Mamdani is getting so much traction because so many middle class are priced out of the city. Housing is outrageously expensive as is child care, education, food, etc.

Adams seems to have done little to help

Once a Republican, always a Republican. He was one for years but then switched parties when he got the bug to hold public office because he knew no black Republican could hope to win a major election in NYC. Once I realized that, I knew he was nothing but a rank opportunist looking to use office to set himself up for the rest of his life.

Then like any good Republican, he ginned up fear of crime and traveled almost exclusively to black churches in working class neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. When there were too many leftward candidates in the ranked choice primary, his exploitative crimewave campaign (he had been a cop for years) paid off and he narrowly won ahead of Kathryn Garcia. In a record low turnout he won the election — he was unknown by most of the city outside Brooklyn (where he had been borough president) and voters were inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Which he squandered almost immediately. He surrounded himself with old cronies and flunkies, made himself inaccessible to the press, especially any press that might have expressed disapproval of him, and the petty grift began, with him and everyone around him. When criticized, he ran back to the black working class churches he considered his prime support and compared himself to the Biblical Job. Those black working class neighborhoods and the police dept. were the only contituencies he ever cared about or extended himself for (he systematically blocked attempts to dicipline rogue police or even to hold the dept. accountable for overreach).

He’s a small, petty man who had no vision for the city or sense that he was there to govern for all NYers not just the ones who helped him win the primary.

Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 12October 4, 2025 7:41 PM

So many of his advisers are also corrupt

by Anonymousreply 13October 4, 2025 7:55 PM

[quote]A "reactionary centrist" is a term used to describe someone who claims to occupy a neutral or moderate political position but consistently directs criticism toward the left while often sympathizing with or excusing the right.

by Anonymousreply 14October 4, 2025 8:46 PM

So centrists DONT like Mamdani - so he is good? Sorry the radical leftist populist TikToks are no more attractive to me than the idiotic simplistic right wing ones. Sooo over the “Mamdani is the savior” Bushwick cool kid mantra/fantasy. Why do we get such horrible choices in the Dem party?

by Anonymousreply 15October 5, 2025 4:23 AM

Uppity.

by Anonymousreply 16October 5, 2025 5:28 AM

OP, corruption isn't bad enough for you?

by Anonymousreply 17October 5, 2025 5:36 AM

Adams is an idiot. He can't string a sentence together. He never should have been elected, on that basis alone.

Atop that, he was living in New Jersey while he was running for mayor.

Atop that, he is crooked as fuck — see all the ethical issues and scandals that came out during his term.

Atop that, he would have been in Trump's pocket for that pardon — if the district court judge hadn't bailed us out by dismissing the corruption case with prejudice.

De Blasio was a clown, but Adams was a corrupt, Trump-beholden clown with the IQ of a dishrag.

I voted for Kathryn Garcia, who should be heading into her second term rn.

by Anonymousreply 18October 5, 2025 5:56 AM

And he electioneered. His portrait was hanging in Borough Hall in Brooklyn the day of the primary and I vaguely remember reports of his campaign staff being inside the zone at polling places where they aren’t supposed to be.

I think he’s Jimmy Walker level corrupt.

And yeah, I also wanted Garcia.

by Anonymousreply 19October 5, 2025 6:55 AM

R14 is right, r7 r15.

A "reactionary centrist" is someone who uses the label of centrist for credibility and then spends all their time attacking the left and repeating right-wing talking points. Atlantic contributors Yascha Mounk and Thomas Chatterton Williams are prime examples.

by Anonymousreply 20October 5, 2025 7:36 AM

I never understood how this crook ever got past his involvement with "Bling Bishop" Lamor Whitehead.

by Anonymousreply 21October 5, 2025 9:47 AM

He’s also a fake vegan.

(The fake part pisses off the vegans, and the vegan part pisses off everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 22October 5, 2025 11:30 AM

Because at this point there is literally nothing to like about him. And I mean NOTHING.

What a jackass. Good fucking riddance.

by Anonymousreply 23October 5, 2025 11:36 AM

Seriously. He’s worse than Guiliani or Bloomberg.

For all their crap, they CARED about the city. I don’t agree with a lot of the ways they went about it, but I never doubted that they loved what they did.

And that’s why I can’t stand Cuomo and appreciate Sliwa staying in the race to give Mamdani the best chance to win. Because Cuomo doesn’t care about the city either. Cuomo doesn’t give two shits about the city, he’s just delusional enough to think that he can use this as a stepping stone back to relevance and somehow, he’ll one-up his daddy and be able to at least credibly run for President. He’s the worst kind of nepo baby.
