They always say film directors create a recurring character or theme that represents them. Pesci is the man Scorsese wished he was or sees himself as in hyper-realistic form. Hence the brilliant films.

And the Academy gave Scorsese makeup Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for a weaker crime film, The Departed (which is nowhere near as great as the original Infernal Affairs).

Raging Bull wasn't that acclaimed when it came out. Ordinary People was a runaway winner.
Raging Bull only became acclaimed as time went on.
