“Got A Hold On Me” (1984) by Christine McVie should have been a #1 hit

It did peak at #10 on the Hot 100 but fell off quickly. It’s such a good song.

But sadly no one else in Fleetwood Mac had the magnetism and star power of Stevie Nicks.

I always found Christine so boring.

And Ive always thought she had a MUCH better voice than Stevie. Songbird is one of the most beautiful tunes ever .

I love “Over My Head” but not a big fan of this one.

I like that one too, OP. I remember it getting a lot of play; surprised it only reached top 10. The rest of the album was kind of bland as I recall but I haven’t listened to it in years

Christine was always a relief from Stevie’s excesses. BTW, her maiden name was “Perfect”.

The sum of Fleetwood Mac was truly greater than its parts of its 3 songwriters. Their flaws stood out more in their solo work.

The band grounded Stevie's tendency for woo-woo, made Buckingham less paranoid sounding and elevated McVie's Mom Jeans songwriting.

R7, in the era of MTV, Got a Hold on Me was the only one without a strong video. Christine was wonderful but too boring to be a video star.

[quote]McVie's Mom Jeans songwriting

LMAO

I've always loved her voice. Very distinctive.

The best solo album between Nicks, Buckingham and McVie was Stevie's first, "Bella Donna." No weak tracks.

by Anonymousreply 11October 3, 2025 10:18 PM

Stevie is the only one with solo icon status and solo success.

by Anonymousreply 12October 3, 2025 10:22 PM

The 84 album was exceptionally pretty. But that was a problem. It wasn't exciting or moving. It was kinda of muzak-y. Within the framework of Big Mac, some of those songs could speak to you but an entire record of it was boring.

Christine had this one Top 10 hit. Lindsey same with Trouble (peak #9). Stevie had four Top 10 solo hits and another (Edge of Seventeen) that came close at #11.

R6 speaks the truth though.

You know, OP, I have always thought that Stevie Nicks was terribly overrated. I preferred Christine and enjoyed her solo work.
