What if the Democrats don't back down and the government stays shut down? What if the military ignore Hegseth and stand down? What if people in the street start rebelling the Trump administration? Could there be an insurrection and the whole Republican party collapses?
Could the Republican Glass House collapse?

Many outcomes are possible, but this shutdown will likely end the way most do — within a week or two, and amid two-way PR fusillades of blame.

Well, technically, it could happen. While a whole political party has never been removed from power by an insurrection in the United States, there is one notable event where a duly elected government was overthrown by force. This was the 1898 Wilmington, North Carolina, insurrection.

I keep hoping the military leaders will muster up the fortitude to take over the government, arrest Trump and most of his criminal administration, and start the country on a new course.
We need a damn coup.

It’s entirely possible that the Democrats’ anemic response is because they are waiting on a scandal to break.

Don't get your hopes up. Dems will back down sure as the sun rises in the east. They already had two defectors, 3 if you count Angus King who caucuses with them.

Yes but if the US government continues the shutdown and Donald Trump enacts firings and cuts to ‘Democrats’ favorite projects’ - when is it enough? What is the final straw that will break Trump's back? The military hate him and are just waiting for the signal for a coup d'état. Is there any democrat raise to power to conduct such an overthrow to the Trump government?

They are in negotiations to build detention camps outside Chicago and other cities. Military and DOD involvement

I think this one will be different, in that the administration will make sure that Democrats are punished for not letting the bill pass right away in the Senate. They are going to cancel spending in blue states and cities and the GOP Congress will ratify those cuts at some point to make any challenge to the administration’s actions moot. There will be a permanent cost.

Much like a constitutional convention, r4, I suspect that would not work out the way we would like.

“Ratification” would need 8 “Dem” senators to defect.

R11, not with a reconciliation bill. There will be at least one in 2026. They can slash away with it.

True
But they’ve tried that already. Even some of their crazy own (like, fleet footed Hawley) are trying to undo the messes they know they’ve made.

I have a sense of foreboding that something big — bigger than anything we've faced since WWII, maybe bigger then the Civil War — is coming and with Trump and the Republicans at the helm, it will be disastrous. I thought Covid was it when it happened, but the country let Trump off the hook and in fact has instead blamed Biden for the pandemic, which is quite hard to wrap your head around given that we lived through it and saw the malpractice and malfeasance of the Republicans in real time. That said, I don't know who among Democrats can stand up at this point and lead the party and ultimately the country out of the abyss. We have candidates but the GOP has done a masterful job of preemptively wrecking their reputations and chances, so I can't see the country writ large getting behind a new Democratic leader and leadership to end this dystopian nightmare of everything good about the nation being destroyed. And now, the country is so divided with Republicans gone mad that something as cheap as 9/11 would simply rip us completely apart not just ending American leadership and dominance, but permanently ending self governance.
I hate this timeline.

t14, are the numerous Republican-made horrors currently underway not big and disastrous enough for you?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 4, 2025 5:03 PM |
R11 They can just vote with a simple majority to get rid of the filibuster on this, as has been done on specific situations multiple times (by both parties).

This government wasn't "duly elected".

I wonder if anyone in the military is clever enough to organize a coup d'é·tat that would engage the whole military into action against current presidential orders.

Anyone can see that Trump is increasingly inane.
And the Epstein files (among other things) have revealed a widening split.
What would take to convince three House Republicans to switch parties?

A whole lot of cash, r21.

One thought that occurs to me is that a majority of the GOP supporting this disaster are compromised--at all levels, including the top who are being squeezed by Russia and Israel.
What happens when someone stands up to being blackmailed? It might just be a question of what happens to someone like, say Lindsey Graham, who has everything exposed (short of being tossed off of a tall window) and the public just finally says "yeah, ENOUGH, we have work to do".
