What is meant by a 'complex person' ?

Yesterday at work, one of my coworkers and I had taken lunch together in the staff lounge. She's early 70s, I'm 60. Another coworker around my age (whom I don't know that well) asked if she could sit for a few minutes with us, and started telling us all about her son away at college. I actually tuned out and was answering text messages on my phone - as I said, I really don't know her and wasn't interested in what she was saying. My coworker said very little to her, and I could tell she was keeping her distance from her.

After she left, my coworker turned to me and smiled. She asked, 'You don't know her that well do you ?' I responded, "I really don't know her at all. Just to say 'hi ' when I'm walking by her." My coworker then said, 'Good. Stay away from her. She's a very complex woman,' and gave me a knowing look (as if to say, I'm warning you.').

I've never heard that term used before, describing someone as 'complex'. Can anyone give me some background on this or examples of what makes someone 'complex' (and to stay away from them').

You have a coworker in her seventies????

by Anonymousreply 1October 2, 2025 12:19 PM

“Complex” can mean many things. OP. But “simple” only means one.

by Anonymousreply 2October 2, 2025 12:19 PM

What she means is that she is threatened by this person and doesn't want you to associate with her.

by Anonymousreply 3October 2, 2025 12:27 PM

Is that similar to "a piece of work"?

by Anonymousreply 4October 2, 2025 12:31 PM

OP have you just been released from a bunker?

by Anonymousreply 5October 2, 2025 12:50 PM

R1-There are two people in my office that are in their seventies.

by Anonymousreply 6October 2, 2025 1:00 PM

Complex: not disposed to obvious patterns, not easily predictable, moody, a "dark horse", layered and difficult to read...

It's not always a bad thing to be a complex person, though often, as OP's co-worker seems to have meant, it has connotations of a complicated (more than complex in the sense of a richly layered person), a person whose potential troubles are not too far below the surface and best avoided.

-10/10

by Anonymousreply 8October 2, 2025 1:12 PM

She's saying this person is nuts and warning you to be careful around her.

by Anonymousreply 9October 2, 2025 1:59 PM

R1 Yes, she's retired and took this as a part-time retirement job.

R7 Thank you for the answer. Now it makes sense.

R8 I picked that up, I was just wondering why she used the word complex on her.

by Anonymousreply 10October 2, 2025 8:27 PM

Nuts

Very Eccentric

Autistic

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder

Asshole/Cunt

The possibilities are nearly endless.

by Anonymousreply 11October 2, 2025 8:34 PM

Annoying but smart.

Interesting but crazy.

Hot and cold.

by Anonymousreply 12October 2, 2025 8:42 PM

The answer is CRAZY. It's like calling an older ugly guy "distinguished." Or saying an ugly girl has a "good personality."

by Anonymousreply 13October 2, 2025 8:44 PM

Your co-worker sounds like a socially graceful person who meant for you to infer what R9 and R13 said.

by Anonymousreply 14October 2, 2025 8:47 PM

Your co-worker doesn't know the meaning of the word 'complex' or is trying to use it as some kind of code word to you. Nothing wrong with being a complex person - being a many faceted person. Maybe the co-worker doesn't understand the difference between an adjective and noun.

by Anonymousreply 15October 2, 2025 9:06 PM

I had a Division Chief who used “complex” as a euphemism for colleagues who were a pain on the ass. Who knows, he may have called me complex to my colleagues!

by Anonymousreply 16October 2, 2025 9:09 PM

You didn’t need to tell us your age OP, using the phrase “taken lunch together” told us all we needed to know.

by Anonymousreply 17October 2, 2025 9:11 PM

"very complex" - She has many complexes.

by Anonymousreply 18October 2, 2025 9:23 PM

She's warning you the other one is a bit crazy. If you're somewhat new to the job, be aware that the truth of that may be questionable. Some people get obsessed with office politics and like to get new hires on their side. If you've been there long enough to know the coworker telling you the info is reliable, then of course that doesn't apply.

by Anonymousreply 19October 2, 2025 9:35 PM

Complex = BPD

by Anonymousreply 20October 3, 2025 12:42 AM

Bless your heart, OP.

by Anonymousreply 21October 3, 2025 12:47 AM

A pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 22October 3, 2025 12:50 AM

Every workplace has at least one.

Psycho, disloyal, self-obsessed, indiscreet, strategically emotional, an occasional flatterer but moody and unpredictable.

8 outta fkin ten bitch. You ain’t fooling me. Who ain’t heard that expression before? Other than that, well written.

by Anonymousreply 25October 3, 2025 1:15 AM

Thanks everyone! It makes it more clearer now. As I said in my OP, I don't know this other woman and I don't associate with her (unless I have to for business reasons), so I will be keeping my distance.

by Anonymousreply 26October 3, 2025 11:44 AM

She meant the woman had more going on than a silly twatling who checks her phone while she's talking because of the twatling's inability too steer the conversation back to something others could enjoy, evidence of what others call an "asocial simpleton,"

So don't sit with her. Don't tell the other coworker what was said. And stick to your non-present virtual communications (whatever they are) and feeds to avoid others. They'll all be better off.

by Anonymousreply 27October 3, 2025 12:01 PM

R27 is angry, while he waits for his breakfast to be delivered by Meals on Wheels. He hates when they run late, because his home health aid has to take him to his doctor's appointment - he has a full day.

by Anonymousreply 28October 3, 2025 12:08 PM

Complex in this context means difficult to the point of trouble. Are you autistic? Stupid? What?

by Anonymousreply 29October 3, 2025 12:31 PM

OP, you're old enough to know how to use a dictionary.

by Anonymousreply 30October 3, 2025 12:40 PM

“She’s a fucking bitch.”

by Anonymousreply 31October 3, 2025 12:43 PM

Hi guys. It's OP again. I was at Wendy's today and wanted to take a seat. There was a nice little table by the window but there was two Dollar Tree bags on the table. I asked the young ladies sitting at the next table if these where their bags. One replied, "Mind your own business buster, and also you're rude" I said "Please I would like to eat my dinner at this table." She said "Go fuck yourself, faggot."

What does "Go fuck yourself, faggot" mean exactly?

by Anonymousreply 32October 4, 2025 9:21 AM

R32 is not the OP. He's a Millennial off his medication.

by Anonymousreply 33October 4, 2025 12:33 PM

I knew a girl who was a 'complex person. ' but then she died.

by Anonymousreply 34October 4, 2025 12:36 PM

R33 is OP, aspie, but no fool! Can't put anything over on him!

by Anonymousreply 35October 4, 2025 12:44 PM

She's REALLY into show tunes

by Anonymousreply 36October 4, 2025 12:56 PM

Mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 37October 4, 2025 1:31 PM

EXHAUSTING

by Anonymousreply 38October 4, 2025 1:36 PM

Why didn’t you just ask your coworker what she meant?

by Anonymousreply 39October 4, 2025 2:11 PM

[quote]You didn’t need to tell us your age OP, using the phrase “taken lunch together” told us all we needed to know.

And if I said I grabbed my insulated Power Rangers* lunch bag with a container of hummus and a juice box, and headed to my car in the parking lot to sit in the back seat all alone and 'destress' from the anxiety i built up from talking to people all morning, you would've guessed I was a Millennial !

*Disney Princess for the female millennials.
