Would you buy a used refrigerator?

Whirlpool, stainless steel, three years old. I want to upgrade to something different.

by Anonymousreply 45October 4, 2025 3:40 PM

Not off the street/Craigslist. Maybe for a garage beer fridge.

From an appliance place that offered some kind of (even half assed) warranty probably.

by Anonymousreply 1October 2, 2025 1:25 AM

In the old days, maybe, because people were more honest then. Or it seemed so.

Nowadays? Nope.

by Anonymousreply 2October 2, 2025 1:34 AM

No. I don't even like the question.

by Anonymousreply 3October 2, 2025 1:41 AM

From where/whom?

by Anonymousreply 4October 2, 2025 1:42 AM

Is it still running?

by Anonymousreply 5October 2, 2025 1:46 AM

No, but the bigger issue is delivery and installation. You might be able to find someone trying to sell, but needs a refrigerator. Alternatively, someone who needs a garage refrigerator might buy it.

You're better off donating it and taking the charitable contribution tax deduction, but again, removing it is going to be a huge hurdle.

by Anonymousreply 6October 2, 2025 2:05 AM

No -- it's probably broken and can't be fixed. Older appliances used to be built for durability, now they are built for "energy efficiency." The average of an average fridge (Whirlpool not Miele) is 7 years. That one is halfway there. And 7 is an average, not all of them make it there.

Go to an outlet place for a new one.

by Anonymousreply 7October 2, 2025 2:16 AM

I'd want to know why they're selling it.

by Anonymousreply 8October 2, 2025 2:17 AM

Lawd, how much is refrigerators these days? You can’t even get a white frigerator for 50 dollars OP? Whew chile the ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 9October 2, 2025 2:37 AM

{R7} " And 7 is average"

Show your math!! (pics please).

by Anonymousreply 10October 2, 2025 2:45 AM

We got ours at a police auction. It was advertised as very clean and came with an ice maker. .

by Anonymousreply 11October 2, 2025 3:08 AM

OP gives me Dahmer vibes.

by Anonymousreply 12October 2, 2025 3:23 AM

Not one that new.

Back in the day, things were built to last -- and they could be fixed when they broke down. Not anymore.

If you can find a used fridge from the 60s or 70s, buy it. And make your own ice, FFS. It's not rocket science.

by Anonymousreply 13October 2, 2025 3:34 AM

That’s the last thing I’d spend my money on. Use them til they die I say.

by Anonymousreply 14October 2, 2025 5:23 AM

r8 Cockroaches, silverfish, and mouse damage probably.

by Anonymousreply 15October 2, 2025 5:28 AM

Around here, you get many people selling because they're redecorating their kitchen and it no longer matches the rest of the appliances. This applies to dishwashers as well.

Or you get people upgrading to the "smart" refrigerators, or french door models so they are offloading perfectly good fridges.

by Anonymousreply 16October 2, 2025 5:37 AM

A three year whirlpool is an upgrade? Make better choices,

by Anonymousreply 17October 2, 2025 5:54 AM

r10 - it's like 100 is the average IQ. They never show their work. My point is that standard appliances are not meant to last, like they used to.

Speaking of average IQs, [bold] I hope I am not derailing an interesting thread on used refrigerators to discuss pigmy IQs. [/bold]

The situation is horrific. The average pigmy IQ is 53! They are considered stupid. I never thought they were dumb--they live in the darkest corners of the Congo rainforest surviving with a blow gun, a wooden spear and a rock fashioned into a knife. I know I could never survive those conditions. Well, some scientists decided to decode their gnome and measure their IQ. Decoding went fine--pigmies are the oldest human branch. Problem came with the IQ tests. Pigmies averaged 53 points.

No one could believe the results. Just by meeting a pigmy and talking to him you realize it's not true.

A little research solved the problem. Evidently pigmies do not want to join the rest of their African neighbors, preferring to live in depths of the Congo. When the scientists administered the tests they only had English or French language tests. They found some enough pigmies who could get along in these two languages to make a representative sample. The pigmies weren't fluent in either language, they could understand it. (Obviously, they speak pigmy.)

Of course they did badly. I cannot imagine doing well in an IQ test that's not in English. Spanish I could get by, I would get a lower score. Portuguese, I'd have to pick out what I understood.

Can you -- a) survive in the dark depths of the Congo and b) do well in an IQ test in a foreign language. I don't blame the pigmies for distrusting the "tall ones."

by Anonymousreply 18October 2, 2025 8:39 AM

Greg, is that you?

by Anonymousreply 19October 2, 2025 3:12 PM

Stainless steel is OUT. You need glass in earth tones.

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2025 5:23 PM

I HATE my stainless steel appliances - I think it was a dumb idea to make that the popular thing. Worse yet, my fridge is stainless steel, but not the kind you can put magnets on so it shows every single fingerprint. I don't really care anymore...I live alone and don't really have people over.

I'd take white over SS any day. Better yet, bring back Avocado or Harvest Gold.

by Anonymousreply 21October 2, 2025 5:57 PM

I wish they're bring back Ivory, Almond, Biscuit or Cream and faux wood grain trim.

by Anonymousreply 22October 2, 2025 6:42 PM

My German fridge is a frosted glass that does not show fingerprints and in a biscuity color with dark grey brown sides, metal, also matt, that doesn't show fingerprints

by Anonymousreply 23October 2, 2025 7:02 PM

R18, my favorite part of your TED Talk was learning that pygmies have gnomes.

by Anonymousreply 24October 2, 2025 7:06 PM

A service man told me that the older models use freon, which is no longer used due to environmental concerns). These units last much longer than new models. So that's something to consider.

by Anonymousreply 25October 2, 2025 7:13 PM

r25 Any good HVAC/appliance repair person can recharge the refridgerant with the no CFC type.

by Anonymousreply 26October 2, 2025 7:26 PM

r23 I'd really love to see a pic of your fridge.

I'm serious.

by Anonymousreply 27October 2, 2025 9:55 PM

r23 Show us your tit...I mean fridge!

by Anonymousreply 28October 3, 2025 12:08 AM

You're better off buying a new fridge from a scratch and dent outlet.

A lot of appliances get returned because there's a small scratch or dent at delivery - which I understand when you've paid so much for it.

Thing is - depending on where the scratch or dent is - you can buy one where it won't show in your kitchen, depending on your layout.

You can typically get 60-70% off the price of new. I got a double-door, counter-depth, bottom fridge stainless steel refrigerator for $900. Retail was $2200.

by Anonymousreply 29October 3, 2025 12:08 AM

I meant genome, yes. r24 -- I don't think they have gnomes because they don't have lawns.

by Anonymousreply 30October 3, 2025 1:23 AM

I with they'd bring back Harvest Gold and Avocado Green.

by Anonymousreply 31October 3, 2025 1:28 AM

I have a Whirlpool that I bought twenty years ago and have never had a problem with it.

by Anonymousreply 32October 3, 2025 1:32 AM

I'd buy used refrigerator before I buy a used washing machine.

Look for a Kenmore or a Whirlpool used fridge. Parts are available for both and they are relatively inexpensive.

by Anonymousreply 33October 3, 2025 1:35 AM

Ten years ago, my husband bought a used refrigerator at a local garage sale for $50. It was already 20 years old. I groaned when they delivered it (free), because it was a Whirlpool, and we were getting rid of a Kenmore (same difference) that had turned out to be a lemon. Well, now 30 years old, this refrigerator still works great.

by Anonymousreply 34October 3, 2025 1:49 AM

OP here. I'm not buying a used fridge, I want to sell my three year-old Whirlpool fridge, because I would like to upgrade to something else. It is my fault that my original post was not clearer. I'm not on Facebook, but I've heard about Facebook Marketplace and I was thinking of using that. It is one of those double door fridges and the freezer section is just not that big.

by Anonymousreply 35October 3, 2025 1:52 AM

Not a white one, hunny!

Oh for heaven's sake, you can’t administer IQ tests to pygmies. They don’t have No. 2 pencils in darkest Congo.

by Anonymousreply 37October 3, 2025 3:16 AM

Why, sure. After all, I was married before to a cold block of ice.

by Anonymousreply 38October 3, 2025 3:28 AM

I'm sure I mentioned this before on DL. During COVID, I had to move to a rental house that I already owned because of a house fire where I had been living. I had the kitchen remodeled when I moved in, and the refrigerator that lived in the house was a ding and dent model, where the ding now showed because of the remodel. I didn't particularly love the color either (white, but 10 years old white). I had the brilliant idea that the side of the refrigerator which faced the dining room could be covered with some sort of gigantic colorful refrigerator magnet with some sort of colorful design. I was just sitting down to design it and make my first billion dollars, when I thought, "maybe I should google this idea before I take out a patent"

Sure enough, someone else (maybe several people) had this idea before me. I quickly found a website called best magnetic skins and bought the "skin" shown on the refrigerator in the main ad. But since visitors will only ever see the side of the refrigerator, not the front, I just use it on the side that people see. If I were a more design-oriented person, I'd buy at least 4 or 5 and change it out by the season or whenever I was bored by the scene. The colors are brilliant and so far (5 years later), they haven't faded in the slightest.

I'd highly recommend this for anyone who loves his/her refrigerator, but hates its color, rather than spend a thousand dollars or more to replace it. As I recall, the skins cost about $100. (Maybe slightly more now). However, your refrigerator must be magnetic. These wouldn't work on those stainless steel refrigerators that are not magnetic. They also make them for stoves and dishwashers if a person wanted to have everything match.

Two questions:

Is Bosch worth the money?

Are LG or Samsung fridges any good?

by Anonymousreply 40October 4, 2025 2:30 PM

I would. And have.

But depends on price and age. Assume you'll get 3-5 years out of it before you'll have to replace it again.

by Anonymousreply 41October 4, 2025 2:38 PM
Is Bosch worth the money?

We love our Bosch fridge, though the freezer is a smidge too small.

by Anonymousreply 42October 4, 2025 2:39 PM
Are LG or Samsung fridges any good?

I've heard bad things about both, particularly Samsung appliances in general. With Samsung TV's are fine but most appliances get bad reviews and terrible reports about service and repair options.

LG appliances also tend to have repair issues. But they're always the cheapest deals in Lowes/HD/Costco et al.

by Anonymousreply 43October 4, 2025 2:45 PM

I checked Facebook Marketplace in my area (Denver) and new-ish Whirlpool fridges are going for $400-$600. Some are from the used/refurbished places that R29 mentioned, and there are a LOT of them.

I don't think you would have an easy time selling OP/R35, and then, as R6 points out, the logistics of getting it delivered. You can say on your ad up and down, "must pick up" and people will ask you if you can deliver it. I've sold a few things on Facebook (mower, snowblower), and people have showed up in Kia's and are shocked when it doesn't fit.

Just buy what you want and have the place swap them out for you. Life is too short to deal with bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 44October 4, 2025 2:51 PM

Does anyone have the Cafe line of appliances? I've heard they are just customizable GE.
