Because they always do. I hope for once they grow a pair and don't. Somehow the Republicans are sending out messaging that, even though they are in control of everything, somehow it is the Democrat's fault this is happening.
Unfortunately leadership is not interested in getting its shit together because the public would be on their side with this one, if they did a better job at informing people what it means.
Then again, Republicans and their pals control most of the systems used for messaging; social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, newspapers, and many broadcast news outlets.

I don't get the Dems going off the shutdown cliff over ACA subsidy extension NOW. It was never going to happen that way as part if the budget, Thune promised (I know, I know) he'd allow a vote on a stand-alone subsidy bill. If they're SO adamantly opposed to the ACA extension, let the R's face the voters with huge premium numbers next year. I just don't see what the Dems have to gain here?
I don't get the Dems going off the shutdown cliff over ACA subsidy extension NOW.
I agree. The subsidies don’t expire until year-end. The House-passed bill funds the government only through November 21. Democrats could have agreed to the current bill and turned their focus to the October/November fight over the next funding bill. People seem to have forgotten that spending bills are a never-ending cycle. There will always be another one after the current one, and sometimes it’s very soon. The Democrats should have waited instead of bowing to the AOCs on the current one.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 2, 2025 4:03 PM |
R44/46 - The subsidies don’t expire till year end, but medical insurance plans have to presume awful restrictions in the Big Ugly Bill will take effect regardless - and they are preparing renewal notices now. Awkward.
But you have a good point.
The ostensible reason for the continuing resolution was that the Republicans couldn’t get their new budgets done on time (surprise, surprise!). They claim they [italic] just[/italic] want another seven weeks to get it all done.
So, rather than wringing their hands over the shutdown, why don’t these Republicans burn the midnight oil, rather than taking endless vacations (excuse me, legislative home work periods), and pass their budgets Now.
Shutdown ends.
WHY aren't Dems jumping on every platform available to blast the Republicans?
R54 I’ve linked an example of why I think most of the Dems don’t know how to message effectively in 2025. It might have been a lovely strategy in 2004, but I think it’s nearly useless now.
AOC makes short bullet-like statements, and Bernie spends most of his time mansplaining the supporting details to AOC.
I think the Dems need to learn how to to condense complex issues to one, maybe two, bullet points in 6th grade English on social media posts that clearly convey that a greater number of White Americans will suffer than Black Americans. I think white supremacy is the main or driving issue for core MAGA voters, and they abhor anything that would put them at a disadvantage to Black folks.
This way, the Dems would acknowledge that all races will be affected, but it would also include psychological warfare against MAGAs and their #1 driving issue.
Alas, I think this is beyond the Dems, except perhaps Newsom.

I hear you, R62, but what’s sad is when “they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs” resonates. And then you top it off with a media that investigates it like it’s true instead of reporting that it’s being spread by an idiot.

Democrats need to keep adding BBB adjustments needed to end the shutdown
1) claw back for ACA premium subsidies.
Next
2) reduction in funding for HSI and ICE
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 7, 2025 6:35 PM |
I agree with the goal R87; but I think they need to do it strategically.
Dems demanded your first item for the CR because it is almost universally popular - even many Republican members want it. It shows the public that Democrats are fighting for something almost everyone wants, over the White House’s objections. (It’s also possibly explains why Republicans are mostly getting blamed for the shutdown despite the WH’s “bully” pulpit.)
My guess is that enough Republicans senators will eventually cave and a health care compromise will be reached to allow the government to reopen, and they will tackle the outstanding budgets.
