I'm afraid the Democrats will weaken and give in making the Republicans look strong and victorious.

Because they always do. I hope for once they grow a pair and don't. Somehow the Republicans are sending out messaging that, even though they are in control of everything, somehow it is the Democrat's fault this is happening.

Unfortunately leadership is not interested in getting its shit together because the public would be on their side with this one, if they did a better job at informing people what it means.

Then again, Republicans and their pals control most of the systems used for messaging; social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, newspapers, and many broadcast news outlets.

The shutdown will finally reveal Project 2025 for the Plantation Revenge of the South for the Civil War.

It is the reason the Trump Bible has a US Constitution with only the original 10 Amendments.

That is as far as the Plantation States signed up for doing business. Nikki Haley was right.

We are here because Lincoln decided against punishing the south. We are here because of his bad decision.

He should have slaughtered every fucking Daughter of the Confederacy to be found.

Why do they hate Americans so much?

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2025 6:09 PM

My 401k is liking the shutdown so far. It looks like the market believes that after Democrats have had the opportunity to express their displeasure, then government funding will soon be approved, so a short shutdown.

I don't get the Dems going off the shutdown cliff over ACA subsidy extension NOW. It was never going to happen that way as part if the budget, Thune promised (I know, I know) he'd allow a vote on a stand-alone subsidy bill. If they're SO adamantly opposed to the ACA extension, let the R's face the voters with huge premium numbers next year. I just don't see what the Dems have to gain here?

by Anonymousreply 44October 2, 2025 3:52 PM

r40 is also:
I don't get the Dems going off the shutdown cliff over ACA subsidy extension NOW.

I agree. The subsidies don’t expire until year-end. The House-passed bill funds the government only through November 21. Democrats could have agreed to the current bill and turned their focus to the October/November fight over the next funding bill. People seem to have forgotten that spending bills are a never-ending cycle. There will always be another one after the current one, and sometimes it’s very soon. The Democrats should have waited instead of bowing to the AOCs on the current one.

R44/46 - The subsidies don’t expire till year end, but medical insurance plans have to presume awful restrictions in the Big Ugly Bill will take effect regardless - and they are preparing renewal notices now. Awkward.

But you have a good point.

The ostensible reason for the continuing resolution was that the Republicans couldn’t get their new budgets done on time (surprise, surprise!). They claim they [italic] just[/italic] want another seven weeks to get it all done.

So, rather than wringing their hands over the shutdown, why don’t these Republicans burn the midnight oil, rather than taking endless vacations (excuse me, legislative home work periods), and pass their budgets Now.

Shutdown ends.

by Anonymousreply 61October 3, 2025 9:54 PM
WHY aren't Dems jumping on every platform available to blast the Republicans?

R54 I’ve linked an example of why I think most of the Dems don’t know how to message effectively in 2025. It might have been a lovely strategy in 2004, but I think it’s nearly useless now.

AOC makes short bullet-like statements, and Bernie spends most of his time mansplaining the supporting details to AOC.

I think the Dems need to learn how to to condense complex issues to one, maybe two, bullet points in 6th grade English on social media posts that clearly convey that a greater number of White Americans will suffer than Black Americans. I think white supremacy is the main or driving issue for core MAGA voters, and they abhor anything that would put them at a disadvantage to Black folks.

This way, the Dems would acknowledge that all races will be affected, but it would also include psychological warfare against MAGAs and their #1 driving issue.

Alas, I think this is beyond the Dems, except perhaps Newsom.

You think this interaction between Bernie and AOC for Instagram wasn't completely rehearsed and made with multiple takes?

by Anonymousreply 63October 4, 2025 11:20 AM

I hear you, R62, but what’s sad is when “they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs” resonates. And then you top it off with a media that investigates it like it’s true instead of reporting that it’s being spread by an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 64October 4, 2025 11:43 AM

Dee, no food stamps for you from here on out, which means no food. The great news is no food mean you won't need insulin either. It's totally a win win situation for you.

by Anonymousreply 65October 4, 2025 12:13 PM

If you think the Dems are bad at messaging, there has never been a time where it has been easier for individuals to shape the national conversation themselves. The leadership is in a weak position, but if you think they should do better, do it yourself. Get a Substack, go viral on TikTok, start a movement.

R63 It could well have been, which in my opinion only makes it worse, because that would mean people were paid to write and produce it that way.

by Anonymousreply 68October 5, 2025 12:31 AM

R68 I have never worked in advertising so I'm not going to say that the AOC/Bernie Instagram was good or bad. I will say it was cleverly done to appeal to multiple majorly different demographics at the same time. I'm not sure if it reached everyone it intended to, but it probably reached some of them just based on chance.

by Anonymousreply 78October 7, 2025 3:45 PM

The pukes want more power and they see this stunt as a way to get it. Democrats and Repukes are not as opposed as is commonly presumed. They both have the same goals in mind but they differ slightly on how to get there. Their goal is power and the electoral system has selected for these type of people to run it. Those who seek power are almost impossible to re train and they will do anything for power.

by Anonymousreply 79October 7, 2025 4:12 PM

According to the NYT, delayed flight arrivals are starting to roil some airports (i.e. Burbank) as more and more ATCs call in sick.

by Anonymousreply 80October 7, 2025 5:07 PM

The fast way for the shutdown to end is for ATC to coordinate a job walk-off.

by Anonymousreply 81October 7, 2025 5:27 PM

The other fast way for the shutdown to end is for the Republican Congress to just go ahead and finish the overdue budgets they claimed they needed the seven week Continuing Resolution to do.

No excuses

by Anonymousreply 82October 7, 2025 6:02 PM

They couldn’t even get a CR passed. In what world are they actually going to pass budget resolutions?

by Anonymousreply 83October 7, 2025 6:16 PM

Ahhh, then why do they need a seven week CR ?

by Anonymousreply 84October 7, 2025 6:21 PM

Because they can’t govern. .

by Anonymousreply 85October 7, 2025 6:29 PM

I was thinking about buying a basic bitch ticket to Boston for next week, but I’m going to let ATC have this one. Walk away, friends. Same for TSA. Walk.

by Anonymousreply 86October 7, 2025 6:34 PM

Democrats need to keep adding BBB adjustments needed to end the shutdown

1) claw back for ACA premium subsidies.

Next

2) reduction in funding for HSI and ICE

by Anonymousreply 87October 7, 2025 6:35 PM

I agree with the goal R87; but I think they need to do it strategically.

Dems demanded your first item for the CR because it is almost universally popular - even many Republican members want it. It shows the public that Democrats are fighting for something almost everyone wants, over the White House’s objections. (It’s also possibly explains why Republicans are mostly getting blamed for the shutdown despite the WH’s “bully” pulpit.)

My guess is that enough Republicans senators will eventually cave and a health care compromise will be reached to allow the government to reopen, and they will tackle the outstanding budgets.

by Anonymousreply 88October 7, 2025 6:50 PM

A conservative pundit who himself doesn't want the increased subsidy extended said soon the Rs will be forced to give in on it.

by Anonymousreply 89October 7, 2025 7:11 PM

Air traffic control about to go down. . . .

by Anonymousreply 90October 7, 2025 7:32 PM

I think the Republicans may end up changing the rules to pass some spending if the shutdown goes on much longer. Of course, if they do that, the Democrats will be in a much worse position regarding their spending priorities, because with a rules change, there's no more brake on the spending cuts.

by Anonymousreply 91October 7, 2025 10:01 PM

Marj has gone off the reservation again:

“The Republican controlled Senate used the nuclear option today to override the 60 vote rule in order to confirm over 100 Trump nominees, yet continues to claim Democrats are causing the shutdown.

Spoiler alert, the Republicans in the Senate can also use the nuclear option to reopen the government and override the Democrats just like they literally did today to confirm Trump nominees.”
