Your Favorite Classic Musical?

Thee is something so special about the old school-big budget musicals of the 1950's and 1960's, which was your favorite?

I love how fucked up carousel is. It’s the only musical I’ve seen that depicts domestic violence

An American in Paris and The Band Wagon. And Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. And Singin' in the Rain. And On the Town, and Easter Parade.

I also have a fondness for Anchors Aweigh. And Best Foot Forward. The original 1940s musical version of State Fair is pretty good. And of course, Meet Me in St. Louis.

I came to the conclusion a while ago I don't really like too many of the movie musicals based on Broadway shows. On the Town is an exception, I guess.

The musical score to "Carousel" is the best.... but these are movies so "West Side Story".

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2025 4:41 AM

It's hardly considered a classic, at least not conventionally, or maybe just the opposite.... or maybe it's a guilty pleasure?

I love On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. I think two of the ballads Barbra sings are beautiful, Go To Sleep still charms me; her clothes, her 1969 hairstyle became iconic, the absolutely stunning colors and art direction....and one of the greatest most awful line of dialog:

"He wasn't interested in me, he was interested in (lowers voice) me!"

I can't tell you how many times I've watched the clips on You Tube

"Singin' In The Rain" walks away the winner. Perfection.

The "Would You" song transitions in action are a masterpiece.

Seven Brides is TERRIFIC. But Singin’ In The Rain is an absolute riot.

Singin’ In The Rain for the win.

[quote]By the time the movie came out he'd been dead for several years.

If he had survived to see the movie, Richard Harris's singing would have made him lose the will to live.
