Gilded Age not returning until 2027
As usual, I’m about a month late finishing a tv show, and just finished season 3 of The Gilded Age. When this happens, I usually look up the viewing thread and rudely bump it.
But the viewing thread is filled up and closed, so I’m even more rudely starting a new one.
I just looked up the timeframe for season 4 and saw — 2027? Dear God in heaven! Will I even still be alive? Will we still be a democracy?
I suspect we will have, not one, not two, but three marriages in season 4 — Larry and Maid Marian, and Peggy and Dr. Kirkland, of course, but also Oscar and Enid Winterton.
That last one will be the most fun for us I think.
Will Bertha and George divorce? I have to admit I find George’s alienation from Bertha to be the most tiresome aspect of the season.
Do we expect Bill Cosby to show up as the minister marrying Peggy and her doctor in season 4? I mean, we already have one Huxtable. Just don’t drink the punch at the reception, ladies.

The less we see of Cynthia Nixon the better.

Will Clock Twink still be a twink in two years?

Unless a show is a HUGE deal, 3 seasons is the standard run for non-network shows now.

R1 is supposed to be biting, not dreary political soapboxing

I save a lot not having HBO Max until then, so I'm good.

I don't understand why streaming shows take years between seasons.
I mean, this is basically Dynasty 1890. They used to crank out 22 episodes each year without even this current lame "winter break" crap that all networks shows now have.
But, Gilded Age only does 8 episodes per season, but needs 2 years?
I suppose it's better than Stranger Things that has taken over 3 years since the last season aired.

Yes, the children are in their 40s now and getting AARP junk mail.

This show grates on me - cant watch more than 5 mins of the annoying, overly enunciated babble. Comic book Downton Abbey.

These actors do other shows, so there are conflicts to work around for filming. Falcon Crest actors just had that show, generally.

It’s a much more elaborate production than Falcon Crest, with a much bigger cast. As others have mentioned, when an actor is committed to a network-style TV series, they have to work around its schedule. It was more like a full-time job than a gig.

I get the scheduling/logistical issues, but this show seemed to be finally picking up some steam. It's kind of a bummer that it won't be back for over a year (though maybe we'll all be in some type of prison camp by then anyway)

Nice Tory content would be approved viewing, though certain DEI subplots might need to be trimmed.

The 2027 date is just speculation in this article. No announcement has been made.

Not even Paul Giamatti makes this worth watching. Nor DL favorite (of some, not all) Audra McDonald.

Well, that will give the Streepspawn time for some acting lessons.
As if those would do any good.

then why are you still watching it? Spare yourself the agony.

Nor for that matter do either Steven Seagal or Pauly Shore!

Christ, it's like Downton Abbey, but somehow even less interesting.
I blame our dog-shit economic situation. People are so despondent over stagflation and the collapse of the middle class that they're burying their troubles in this overdramatized white nonsense about rich assholes back in an era where electric lights were as rare as a syphilis-free teenager.

R23 I had to sit through episodes of The Gilded Age because someone special to me loves Audra. I was then dragged to Downton Abbey by aforementioned special person and I said “What the hell. I like Paul Giamatti!” No dice it sucks. They both suck. I do too, but in a really good way.

R6 - I'm currently on another high production value 1 hour streaming show. It takes at least a 14 months from shoot to air - and that's assuming all your scripts are in decent shape before you start shooting - add 6 more months for that.
The level of production and finish on these shows is so much higher than on an 80s prime time soap you can't really compare them in any meaningful way. The scripts, sets, costumes, level of acting, edit, music, mix, camera work, color and VfX that go into a top tier TV show today is more on the level of an 80s feature film.
If the actual hour of entertainment is not work all those extra millions and manpower, that's another issue entirely.

[quote]I don't understand why streaming shows take years between seasons.
It's the new normal. I watch every 8 to 12 episode show knowing that I won't see it for a couple of years. That's the result of the rise of "prestige television." It's quality over quantity.
[quote]What! Gilded Age and Downton Abbey aren’t the same thing?
I was just trying to explain to a friend, who never watched Downton, that the shows are basically the same thing: much ado about nothing for an hour. Even when things seem dire, they're quickly forgotten about.
That is, unless you're Peggy. I was happy she didn't spend the season running from the KKK or finding out her baby died after he was given up for adoption by her father. Finally, her problems were as boring as everyone else's.
