Killing off Geraldine Fitzgerald’s character is the main reason Poltergeist II failed
I will stand by that statement and swear to it on any Bible in any court or law. The producers hired the best actress in the history of the franchise and killed her off within 5 minutes of screen time thereby severing the close bond between the main character, Carol Anne. One could argue there was even a closer emotional connection between Heather O’Rourke and Geraldine Fitzgerald than Heather O’Rourke and JoBeth Williams.
Although the grandmother helps Carol Anne fight Kane as a spirit guide, it would have been a much better movie had she been helping Carol Anne as a strong matriarch of the family.
The movie literally falls apart after her character dies.

It would have been better if they had Fitzgerald's character take Carol Anne out for an expensive Filet Mignon dinner where she asks her to stay with her at her apartment the next night while she kills herself.
