Jane Fonda is 'scared to death' she won't work again
Oscar winner Jane Fonda, who turns 88 at the end of December, was just interviewed on CNN by journalist Christiane Amanpour. They talked about Redford's passing (Fonda pointed out they costarred in four movies together), and then Fonda said she hasn't worked in 3 years - and she's scared to death her acting career is over. She 'needs to work' because that is her 'craft', but she hasn't gotten any offers. She did 3 movies in 2022 (all released in 2023), but nothing since. She admitted, "I shouldn't be saying this, but I'm scared to death!"
I will post a link when it becomes available on YT.

I love Jane, but let's be honest: how many interesting roles are there for 88 year olds, male or female.

She also had a big Netflix series when she was in her 70s: Grace and Frankie. She's had more opportunities than most women actresses.
There are other ways to perform her craft. She could do community theater and mentor some younger people. I would imagine she has enough money already.

Unless they make a vehicle specifically for her, I think she'll likely never have a leading role again. I would think there are various supporting roles for a woman her age. Then again, she might be perceived (right or wrong) as being too pricey for smaller productions.
Ordinarily I'd scoff at that kind of statement being made, but I suspect that she was being sincere. I'm sure the decline of her career is emotionally tied up with her own worries about aging and mortality.

This was like Joan Rivers--in A PIECE OF WORK, she had this haunting moment where she paged through a calendar for which she had not lined up dates yet and said, "This is not working! This is death!" and she was by then in her 80s.
You've got to let go at some point.

In my opinion, most of these folks who insist on working past their prime, politicians (Dianne Feinstein), rock stars, pop stars (Frankie Valli), actors etc. aren't doing it for love of craft or those they serve/fans but out of greed, ego, too many bad financial decisions (aka divorces) and family who are leeches. Jane would fall under massive ego.

With all known actors - they can work if they want to. It's that their egos make them think they have to be the lead in everything they do - and it has to be in a studio film or a big series.
It's not about acting - it's about power and adulation, press and awards.
Real working actors take what they can get - and they are grateful for it.

[quote]I love Jane, but let's be honest: how many interesting roles are there for 88 year olds, male or female.
If she looked her age, if she had laid off the plastic surgery and transitioned to a character actress, she'd still be working.
Jessica Tandy was working up until her death at 85. Hers were the kind of roles Jane Fonda should be doing today.
But how are you going to cast an 88 year old woman who is trying to look 35?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 27, 2025 5:21 PM

Because as well cultured and well-read as she is, Jane is still Hollywood at the end of the day. The plastic surgery was beneath her, but that's still the core of her.
Her documentary was an eye opener. She tailored her personality into whatever the man in her life at that time wanted her to be. Her retirement had more to do with Ted wanting his wife around than out of any need of hers.
I suspected she threw herself into her work so much over the last decade because there hasn't been a man with her. And she probably can't fathom just being by herself.
Her childhood really did a number on her.

The chances of Jane getting a leading actress/starring role may be rather slim, but perhaps she could have a supporting role or cameo in any number of the shows now being produced by the many streaming companies. There may be several acting opportunities for something other than the lead role.
Television: Is there a supporting role in any of the regular network's SVU/Law & Order type shows?
What about a supporting role in a limited-run Broadway play? I don't think she would want the lead actress role where the weight and success of the show might rest on her shoulders. Why does "working" have to be in a movie?

Like the Boomers who are still in the workforce, even though they could retire tomorrow and still be set for life. In my line of work many of the top-level executives are Boomers who should've retired years ago and enjoyed their money but they've kept hanging on because they love the prestige and they have no other interests. It wouldn't be so bad if they adapted with the times but their attitudes are stuck decades in the past and they are clueless about technology. It's very frustrating to work with these dinosaurs.

There's a lot of confusion about retirement. TV shows us healthy vital people with silver hair who are either on a cruise or at the country club. June Squibb is 95 - her latest movie is Eleanor The Great - if June can do it then Jane can too!
Maybe they could team up and have a senior themed 'Sista's 'til The End' movie where to old, cantankerous sisters living together get into constant squabbles and eventually end up killing each other!
Jane had her day in the sun decades ago - the clouds started rolling in the late 90's, night has fallen and her final curtain will soon fall. So Jane, if you're listening, make that call to June and get that movie into production - time's a wastin'!

You must know what all of this means, people. Jane is lonesome and bored because her own family keeps her at arms length. Old Granny is unwelcome at her children and grandchildren’s houses 65% the time, she HAS to find something to do with her time.
Jane Fonda should do what most washed up actresses over 65 do - write children’s books and paint bad paintings. I suggest watercolor because by the time she mixes the oil, she could be dead.

Get off the fucking stage and, more importantly, stop fucking whining about your vanity and your fears.
It's unseemly to be 88 years old, to have started in 54 films, won a library full of major awards, and to have a couple hundred million in the bank only to measure your worth by what leading actor roles you are offered in major films. Do I look pretty? Do I look younger than my years? Should I do more plastic surgery? Does the public love me? Who's directing the picture? Will my name appear first?
Get a fucking hobby. Read. Start a foundation or three to support writers of great roles, or support women directors, or whatever cause she wants to champion. It's that or underwrite the insurance policy to provide that she lives long enough to finish filming a role.

I have yet to hear a good reason why a woman her age should give up acting. She's an older woman. She's not going to be taking roles from young starlets who haven't had a chance. The bias actually works the other direction. And older women exist and should be, and sometimes are, represented in movies and TV, so someone needs to play those roles.
And she has found a good cause and has been working for it regularly for years now. She wants to do some acting on top of that. Why is that so bad?

R179 you rang! I can see his point but nonetheless I enjoyed the film and thought Fonda and Redford had chemistry in this film. The same year NYTimes' critic Bosely Crowther also disliked Stanley Donen's Bedazzled and Bonnie and Clyde
Evidently it was discovered that Miss Fonda couldn't do much of anything too well, except for hurling herself into the arms of her astonished husband, played by Robert Redford, and planting violent stage kisses on his paralyzed lips. Thus much of the early part of the picture, including a prologue honeymoon in the Plaza Hotel, is taken up with scenes of Miss Fonda osculating and running around in scanty attire.
So voracious is her ardor, it's no wonder that Mr. Redford, who originated the role of the husband in the stage play and seemed reasonably relaxed in it, plays most of his scenes in a state of tenuous terror, as though fearful of being attacked—all of which makes one wonder how such a normal and nervous fellow could ever have got himself hooked up with this kookie kid

Not in Klute where she was TV Movie of the Week adequate, certainly not in Barefoot in the Park, not in They Shoot Horses..., Coming Home, Julia, On Golden Pond, The Morning After, and not in the comedy ensembles of her later career.
It's simply that her acting falls short for me. And that I appreciate more the people who, at 88 or so, don't measure their worth by their spotlight wattage directed at them (whether CEOs or actors). I never found Redford a very good actor, but I very much respected his long second act in which he sought to spotlight others and support independent filmmakers.

The New York Times review of Barefoot in the Park was pretty bad. Despite that it was an immediate hit and played Radio City for months making it one of the biggest hits to ever play in that 6,000 seat theater. Then it went wide and it was huge. Neil Simon very stupidly sold it for a lump sum and got no points on the film. I don't believe he got any points on the stage play either. Which has been playing somewhere from when it opened in 63. He had a horrible agent and lost a ton of money on the play. He also did not participate in the profits of the film of The Odd Couple. or the TV show. Another ton of money lost. He still kept the rights to the stage play so whenever it is performed he shares in the royalties.

I know she tried to make things right with her daughter. The one who made the remark about Jane being a chameleon. I hope that worked out. I just think it’s ridiculous that at 88. She doesn’t understand why producers aren’t tripping over themselves to hire her.
Also, that interview was about Redford and of course she made it about herself because she’s just as rapid as the rest of them. Just because we like her and she’s been in some classics does not mean she has any more sense than your normal Hollywood bimbo.

[quote]I feel sorry for these actresses that are older now and never took the time to raise their children properly
Reminds me of what Diana Ross said in one of her later interviews on 'Actors Studio' (I miss that show). When Lipton asked why she turned away from movies after the 1970s, she explained it was because of her three little girls. She wanted to be part of their lives growing up and not thousands of miles away for months at a time, shooting a movie on location (she realized that while she was in NYC filming 'The Wiz' in 1977, and they were on the west coast in LA). Though she continued to get plenty of movie offers in the 80s and 90s, she chose to stay put and be home for her kids (she had two more sons in the late 80s). She could still manage her recording career (she lived in CT and her recordings were mostly done in NYC in the 80s), and did her concert tours in the summer and on school breaks. At 81, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, it certainly paid off.

Add Barbra to that list, who just a couple of years back was complaining that she was unhappy with her career and felt she still had more to do. I don't think her son has much to do with her at this point, as she's devoted to playing happy Grandma with her stepsons' children and her cloned dogs.
And it pains me, but Cher as well. Two kids with issues, and she's chasing 30 year old men.
At some point you have to accept things as they are, and these women have had A TON of success and opportunities that a majority in their field will never get. But it's not enough. It's never enough.
I admire entertainers like Tina and Barbara Mandrell who walked away when they felt they had enough. Or women like Diana who still get opportunities but turn them down because they want to be with their families. And they never looked back.

[quote]Add Barbra to that list, who just a couple of years back was complaining that she was unhappy with her career and felt she still had more to do. I don't think her son has much to do with her at this point,
Complete bullshit. She never said such a thing and you don't know anything about the relationship with her son.

Jeff is 12 years younger than Jane, but you would never know it in "The Morning After."

Actually R210, after Psycho (1960) Perkins career floundered. Jane went on to Cat Ballou, Barefoot in the Park, Barbarella and They Shoot Horses, Don't They

This thread makes Jane Fonda seem very interesting (beyond the politics). I just bought a copy of her autobiography of 20 years ago. Luckily this I can’t get a job at 88 shit will not be in it.

R225 - Jane seems to have some mobility challenges during her 'strut' in that ghastly enclosure she's wearing. As R227 noted, this is not a good look for her or anyone over 30 who isn't rail thin.
That old Hose Bag Martha Stewart was featured in a SI issue wearing a bathing suit while lolling on the beach - she was (at least) 80 - and looked it. Kinda reminds me of a beached Walrus.
Why would anyone with any self esteem expose themselves in such a degrading way just to say 'I've still got it' when it's been decades since they ever did. Maybe it's the med's they're taking that makes them 'think' they're still hot.

Please say this louder, so those old crony colleagues of mine can hear you. They all think they've aged gracefully and naturally like I have, and can pull off being a sexy goddess in their 90s like me.

I think it's admirable that Jane Fonda still wants to work. I hope that I'll still have that zest for life when I'm 88, which won't be for another 56 years.

[quote][R35] Will always associate her with Aunt Meg from Twister, but she was also fantastic in one of the best episodes of one the most underrated shows in history, The Americans.
Incidentally, Lois Smith first film was EAST OF EDEN, which was James Dean's first starring role and the only one released while he was still alive. It came out in March 1955 and he died in September. REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE was released one month later in October and GIANT over a year later in November 1956. He received back-to-back posthumous Oscar nods for EDEN and GIANT.
Anyway, here's Lois' screen test with Dean:

[quote]Bette Davis worked until she dropped dead. She said she couldn't ever imagine not working as an actress.
She also said in her 1987 memoir that she needed the money. An example of a project she said she took only for the money was Burnt Offerings (1976). When she tied in 2989, her estate was valued between $600,000 and $1M, lending some plausibility to the stories of her needing money.

True, r237. Bette supported her leeching family members for most of her life and they really drained her finances.

Though she died at 74, Agnes Moorehead was another actress who said she would have to be carried off the set of a project before she ever retired from acting. That almost came true - she was at the end stages of uterine cancer, but still took the role in the Broadway musical 'Gigi' just months before her death. She finally left the production at the end of January, when she knew she no longer had the strength to leave her NY apartment. She was hospitalized in mid-February, and lingered for 10 weeks until her death. Yet she left her legacy as a 'working actress' - no a retired one.

R230 reminds me of the ever useful quote from Samuel Johnson.
[quote]"Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all." --Boswell 'The Life of Dr. Samuel Johnson', 1791

It's funny that Jane went from being scared to death because she wasn't getting work, to forming a committee (which is a perfectly fine activity for a senior, but funny that she makes it about herself). Now she is back in the limelight. She's the kooky senior who can't turn off the camera.

R263, my original response timed out…
That being said… Those boys were sent to a meat grinder. They were drafted or signed up. They engaged in guerilla warfare, which the US really had little experience with it. Some went because their number was called. For others they joined because their number was early on. My dad was a very low number, so he joined. He left the person my mom married, he came back someone else. I am privileged to know the latter… I love my dad… With all of the flaws and frustrations and not knowing why he acted like he did. Also, not knowing how I could have done something different. I wouldn’t trade him for anything.
Go to DC… Take a walk along the wall… Look at the names… When you come out of the memorial, please be so flippant…
Fuck Hanoi Jane. I don’t care if the old bitch ever works again.
