The short-lived CBS horror series "American Gothic" (1995–1996)

This series, executive-produced by Sam Raimi and created by Shaun Cassidy, only lasted one season but has developed a cult following over the years. It focuses on a small South Carolina town that is under the thumb of a malevolent, occultist sheriff (Gary Cole) who is attempting to gain control over his young biological son (Lucas Black). It's been on my radar for a long time and I decided to start streaming it this afternoon. It's dated for sure (mainly the special effects), but so far I am finding it very entertaining. Great atmosphere. Jake Weber (who looks cute as hell) also stars as the town doctor, and very young Sarah Paulson plays the young boy's sister who, after her death, guides him as a ghost. Brenda Bakke is amusing playing the sultry local tramp/schoolteacher. Did anyone watch this when it originally aired?

It WAS “American Gothic!”

I remember the reviews were excellent.

I liked Gary Cole from Midnight Caller, but I was in college and had other things to do on Friday night.

Jake Weber was a cutie. He really aged between that show and Medium.

Seems like it was on the wrong network — NBC could have nurtured it; looks like CBS was trying to be NBC around this time and ratings didn't follow, so they pulled the plug on a swath of edgier shows and gave us all "Touched by an Angel."

I wanted to be Lucas Black's bff

Was it based on the horror movie with Rod Steiger and Yvonne DeCarlo?
