With films streaming shortly after release, the bad audience behavior, buying reserved seats online with no one enforcing/ushering, expensive concessions, and a million other reasons - do you still see films in a theater?
Tuesday only. It's cheaper for the over 65's. Our local cinema has 2 screens, comfortable couches/sofas,( no hard seating) cushions, great coffee, food, wine, beer, juice, ice cream.

I’ll go see real film projected at one of Tarantino’s revival houses in LA: the Vista and the New Beverly, just for the novelty and nostalgia. Otherwise, I'm not really interested in watching a video projection with strangers, who are frequently rude and sticky
Also, most of the offerings in movie theaters are crap. I will probably see Wicked when it comes out, but it takes a title like that to get me into a modern theater

I remember when HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and The Movie Channel became available with cable TV and everyone thought that would be the end of movie theaters. That didn't happen. Then it was the advent of VHS tapes, video stores and affordable VCRs - that was definitely the end of movie theaters. Didn't happen. Then 'Netflix by Mail'. It didn't happen. Then streaming services - Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Then it started happening (second-run neighborhood theaters started closing). And then the Pandemic - it finally happened.

I typically see something in a theater if the director or others involved in making it are in attendance doing a talkback or interview. But I live in NYC and realize that can't happen everywhere. Otherwise I'll wait to stream something even if it's something I really want to see.

Never since they closed during COVID and never reopened.

It does not seem like there is anything worth going to the movies weekly for.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 24, 2025 12:04 AM |
I got twice a month with a couple of friends.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 24, 2025 12:13 AM |
All the time. I love seeing a movie in a nearly empty theater around 10 PM on a weekday, especially if it's horror.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 24, 2025 12:15 AM |
I go once or twice a week.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 24, 2025 12:31 AM |
I love going during my lunch hour. It’s cheaper too since it’s daytime.

No, OP. I have fear of bed bugs, and my favorite quote is “Hell is other people.”
I’ll stay home.

When I go see a movie in a theater, I only go on my day off when I am well rested.
If I were to go to see a movie in a theater on a weeknight after a long day of work, I would likely fall asleep in my seat, just like I often do when watching TV at night after work. Why should I pay $20 to fall asleep in a theatre when I can do it at home for free.

R10 On your lunch hour ? Do you work in a movie theater and take a seat during your lunch hour? Does it take you two lunch hours over two days to finish the movie ?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 24, 2025 12:48 AM |
Yeah, I generally still see at least one movie a week. We have some good, independently owned theaters near me where people are generally well behaved and they show indie, foreign, and revival films.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 24, 2025 12:54 AM |
You're lucky, r14. I'd love to have access to a revival theater. The Cinemark near me sometimes shows old movies. I saw Alien in theaters last year and it was a fantastic experience.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 24, 2025 6:15 AM |
At least once a month or so. But I'm getting tired of all the ads and trailers and other garbage that gets shown before the movie starts.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 24, 2025 2:20 PM |
I’m tired of people treating it like their living room. Talking loudly and getting up and moving seats. On their phones.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 24, 2025 2:50 PM |
I went to The Grove AMC the other day for Spinal Tap2. There was 25 (!!!) mins of commercials first. LOUD. Then the movie which was only a bit over an hour. It was supposedly 1.30. No, it was an hour. Beyond that, barely any watchable films. Most shitty loud horror and a plethora of bald guys fighting. I wish there were more movies being made. Remember the 1970’s? All those story films.

I haven't been in any kind of theater for three years. I'm kind of burned out on traditional culture in general.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 24, 2025 3:00 PM |
Two to three times a week. Love it. With the unlimited plans, you can get down to under $3 a movie. Never been cheaper to see a movie this way, and theaters are remodeled and delightful.
Yes there are 25 min of previews and commercials. So just arrive later? Not hard. You have an assigned seat after all.
I don’t get what the whining and complaining is all about. I love seeing movies on a big screen and uninterrupted. Not sitting at home on a small screen with distractions all around me. I support traditional movies.

Movie theaters and highways resurrect my hidden thought-it-was-dead bigotries. It’s not good for me or anyone else.
I last visited a theater in 2014 and it was Grand Budapest Hotel.- that was a good one to see on a large screen.

The last movie I saw in a theatre was Parasite. Then Covid happened, and I fell out of the habit. It was a habit that had dwindled over the years anyway. Ticket prices are way too high for the mixed quality of movies today -- $15 for *that*? it wasn't worth $1.50 (which was what children's double-feature Saturday matinees cost when I was a child long ago). I hate the endless ads before the feature starts, never mind people who don't know how to act in a movie theatre (talking, scrolling, bringing in entire meals, etc.). Also not a fan of having to buy a specific seat, which means you can't move if someone near you is talking, scrolling, eating Thai food (I love Thai food, but I don't want to smell it in a movie theatre).
Sure, I would have liked to have seen Oppenheimer on a huge screen, but streaming it on my TV in the peace and quiet of my living room was just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 24, 2025 5:36 PM |
Since so many of the films arent that great, it has tobe something that i really want to see in order to spend the $15.00 on the ticket plus popcorn. However, i do like when they show the classics on the big screen.

The last time I saw a movie at a cinema was Dunkirk, because I wanted to see it in IMAX.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 24, 2025 5:52 PM |
I saw both Dunkirk and Oppenheimer in theaters and wish I hadn’t. I couldn’t understand a word of dialogue in either movie. It’s the way Nolan does sound mixing. I wish I had watched at home with closed captioning on.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 24, 2025 6:15 PM |
I’d rather watch a film in my living room than in a theatre with people treating it like it’s their living room.

My last theatre experience was Free Solo, the Alex Honnold documentary, in IMAX. That came out in 2018.
I would have liked to see the upcoming Depeche Mode film, but it won't be playing near me.
I don't have the attention span or interest to sit through most 2 hour films any more, let alone go out of my way and spend money on a ticket to see one in a theatre.

Last week I went to a Regal theater last Tuesday. Purchased ticket for $7.99 “Tuesday matinee” price. (Tuesdays are half price day at most theater chains if you didn’t know that.) I am a member of the “Fan Club” on Fandango where you pay $9.99 a month, but they give you a $10 ticket voucher each month valid for any movie and then no online ticketing fees.
Used their “Apple Pay Wednesday” promo code for $5 off.
My ticket was $2.99.

There’s nothing that can replicate the theater experience, especially horror movies. How else are you going to yell at the screen to don’t go in there, girl! Or scream at the top of your lungs and throw popcorn? It’s a communal experience like a bathhouse.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 24, 2025 8:41 PM |
I probably go 3-4 times a year now if there is something I really want to see.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 24, 2025 8:46 PM |
It would be better if the projectionist would pause the movie whenever someone leaves the theater and wait until they came back to resume.

Saw the Spinal Tap sequel in a theater last weekend. I think the last time I went to a movie theater was for Barbie two years ago. Snuck candy in both times. In the old days, of course, I'd go at least once a month, but something's changed—more expensive, fewer compelling (for me) movies out there, sparser audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 24, 2025 8:55 PM |
After years of watching movies at home during the pandemic it’s so great to see them on the big screen.
I’m so much more forgiving when it’s on a big screen

If I'm going to a movie theater, I expect to see a good film with REAL ACTORS, not riff raff Puerto Rican reggaeton singers or football players that get married well .

Speaking of the classics, Regal is running classics every day for the next few weeks. I’m seeing Casablanca today. Upcoming titles include Vertigo tomorrow, 2001 Friday, Close Encounters Saturday, Lawrence of My Labia Sunday, Chinatown Monday, etc.
If of any interest to anyone.

When does Deep Throat play?

R25, I wish I had seen Oppenheimer first at home as well. I had a hard time understanding the dialogue also. I read once the British do the sound mixing differently. I'm not sure about that, but I find hearing the dialogue, let alone understanding the accents, of British films often difficult. With Oppenheimer, I could follow the story very well, I think I left early.
Before someone calls me a yahoo because of the British accent thing, I spent a lot of time in London on business and had an English boyfriend for over a year, I still sometimes have a problem understanding a word or phrase here or there.
