Have you ever sampled this French delicacy? Are you a fan, neutral, or no way, Jose?
I was going to link to a photo but decided against it as I know some here would blow a gasket!

Yes, it’s not bad, but that’s really just because of the garlic, lemon, and butter.
You could make a pebble palatable with that trinity!

Haven't had it in years but I ate them quite regularly in the1980s. A French thing. In garlic butter.
At the time les françaises I was hanging with said the Asian variety were too rubbery.

When I was younger I made sure to sample any food that I had only read about. The texture was just too off-putting to me, as is octopus.

I've had it maybe a dozen times, but it's not something that I can see anyone craving. I will probably live out my days without having it again as it's so rarely seen on menus, though I did order it in Paris once because Parisian bistro. As R1 says, that combination is astounding and could make a tractor palatable.

They're delicious and I like the chewy texture. Sauce is everything and a crisp white wine.
Also good are periwinkle snails in black bean sauce; I've cooked those at home.

Hi Gerg.

Nope can't get past the idea.

20 years ago on a cruise ship. It was fine. I didn't love it but it was better than raw oysters.

Love them and have since I was a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 24, 2025 12:40 AM |
It was decent when I tried it. But as has been mentioned, that was largely due to the sauce.
Once I had that experience behind me, it was not something I had any strong desire to repeat. Not saying I would never eat escargot again, but I sincerely doubt I would.

Eating snails 🐌 was the origin of the slur frogs 🐸 for the French.

Like the posts above, I've had it a few times - and really all you taste is butter and garlic.
It feels like a 1970s/80s daring dish to prove your 'sophistication' - but it really doesn't have much taste and isn't worth the price. That's why you don't see it anymore.
Feels gimmicky today.

As a kid worked in restaurant-made and served that s***. Stuffed in reusable shells along with lots of butter and lemon AND those same tongs I Love Lucy pinched her nose with to an avoid the smell.

Thank god I'm a vegetarian.

I’m sorry, lemon? Whoever is preparing or serving you escargot in some sort of lemon sauce deserves the guillotine.

I don't want no stinking snails!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 24, 2025 3:50 AM |
I love them with an aroma filled cup of High Point coffee.

Loved them since the 80s, and not for the sauce. I was afraid to try them at first, and when a friend ordered them I just dipped some bread into the sauce that remained. I could taste all the ingredients listed above plus something else I loved but couldn't place. When the friend told me that was the taste of the snail itself, I was sold.

No, I don’t eat snot.

R8, I felt the same way you did for years until someone told me: "Well, you love oysters and clams, don't you?"
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 24, 2025 5:14 AM |
I could live without it. As someone else said, all you taste is the garlic.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 24, 2025 5:16 AM |
Yes, love them that way and have had them many times. I've also had them cooked in a southern Italian recipe with red sauce and pasta and it was divine as well. There's a Spanish restaurant that specializes in Spanish wines pared with tapas near me and I always go there when I need my fix for garlic , butter snails. They also serve my other love, octopus leg 🦵

Agree with others that it’s mostly a butter and garlic delivery vehicle.

I think one of your American cousins ate my geranium.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 24, 2025 2:07 PM |
I had it once in a French restaurant in Philadelphia--I was feeling bold. I enjoyed them, but I rarely go to a restaurant where they're offered (I now live on the other coast).

Yuck! I imagine snail/slug would have the consistency of a crisp jarred gerkin? I'll think of this French dish the next time I'm moving a slug off my catwalk.

R27, a very different texture.

Escargots are okay; I used to like them more than I do now. Caracoles in Spain are so-so; much better in a seasoned sauce than in caracole juice.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 25, 2025 10:10 AM |
My family used to make them. It's a process. You keep them alive and feed them bread crumbs. Once their poop turns white they're ready to boil and eat!

R30, did you grow up in France?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 27, 2025 12:13 AM |
When I was a kid in the late 60s my dad was friends with the owner of one of those once ubiquitous Theater District French Restaurants. I remember going a few times - a narrow, dimly lit place that felt very exotic. My sister and I, both under 7, ate S-Cargo having no idea what the hell it was. I liked it ok, but years later felt my parents had played a dirty trick on me. I've never had them since.

Proper escargot is delicious.
Don't risk and don't settle.
