He had Stage 3 colorectal cancer as of 2023. His wife is a MAHA influencer and he was vague about his treatments. Given that he now looks to be on death’s door in less than 2 years, I suspect he tried to treat his advanced cancer with Ivermectin.

It's horrifying that a man his age (48) even has Stage 3 colorectal cancer -- stage 3 meaning cancer originating in colon has spread to other organs. Generally, colorectal cancer is slow-growing and can be present for several years before detection. Colon cancer screenings aren't recommended until age 45. This is why it is more fatal in younger people.

At our age, we don’t wear crewneck, James; we want a V to distract the eye from possible vagina neck.
Also, I’m hoping you or your wife purchases only new clothes or clothing from other influencers. There’s stiff competition for size 27/28 waist and even more competition for Euro sizes. Plus, most of the offerings feature SHORT inseams. Some 4’11” freak consigns Thom Browne all the time. In this clothing size, you compete against Asians, women who want pockets, and thirteen year-old kids before the growth spurt. James is six feet tall, so he should be able to shop with the other tall folk.

It's highly dependent on what type of cancer it is. Stage three prostate cancer has a five-year survival rate of nearly 100%. Stage three colon cancer, Van Der Beek's original diagnosis, has a median five-year survival rate of nearly 80% these days. If his diagnosis and/or treatment were indeed delayed by an aversion to conventional medicine, as some have speculated, he could save many lives by disclosing it. But he might also worry about scorn being directed at his wife once he's gone.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 23, 2025 7:48 PM |
Make that "metastatic."
He is clearly Stage 4 and compliant Stage 4s can have a couple of years at least. He's an example of someone who didn't get or want the appropriate care. Also, so much depends on the location of the tumor. I had mine removed without need for an ostomy. Dont delay treatment. Get a baseline colonostomy. And follow all the guidelines to lower the risk of colon cancer and recurrence. Bye bye processed meat.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 23, 2025 7:48 PM |

Chemo and Radiiation are the direct route to death, though doctors and hospitals promote these because it brings in money. RadioSurgery is a non-evasive method, aiming directly at site of cancer, instead of filling the body with deadly chemicals.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 23, 2025 8:00 PM |
R70 It depends on the type of cancer, the status of the growth. Surgery in some cases will allow the spread of the cancer cells, for others it's a life saver.

Same with Ananda Lewis, who died from cancer earlier this year.
She refused traditional medicine, in favor of "natural" treatment.
Ananda was only a few years older than James VDB.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 23, 2025 8:32 PM |
Yeah, that pic don’t look like he’s beating cancer. Stage 3 colorectal cancer is curable with surgery and treatment, but not a certainty. If he hasn’t done anything but his “natural” remedies, he’s most assuredly living on borrowed time. It’s possible he also had a stomach bug of some sort, but that’s not causing him to look like that. Cancer sucks, but it’s a little difficult to sympathize with people who reject science.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 23, 2025 8:33 PM |
Your response to chemo is highly individualistic and depends on the drug combo and length of treatment. It's not fun and it takes time to recoup but it's nothing to fear. The people who have it the worst either have no support systems or they're breadwinners or childcare providers for their entire family. You absolutely need time off to recuperate post chemo.

Here's the cure rate. There is no reason to let it go to Stage IV if you know the symptoms to look for. Also you can reduce the risk of recurrence with diet and exercise and by not drinking or smoking. Symptoms listed below. When you have it, you know you have some sort of colon dysfunction that requires medical treatment.
Stage 0: 99%
Stage I: 92%
Stage II: 88%
Stage III: 68%
Stage IV: 13%

He could be trying real medical treatment as well as holistic medicine. I know people who have done both. I don't know if it extended their lives but it gave them a greater geeling of participation and control of their disease.
I noticed when they spoke of treatment they stressed their own participation in the alternative methods, to the point where we would ask about traditional medicine. "Oh yeah. That too. of course "
The non-traditional covered all the other bases. I would probably treat it that way.

I have a blood cancer (doing well, thanks!) but I remember when I was first diagnosed someone said I should look into alternative medicines -- I don't remember if they used that phrase but that was essentially the advice. I was also encouraged to "do my own research." I was like, you dumb bitch, I work full time and bust my ass at a part time job too. When do I have time to do research? My taxes pay for scores of thousands of medical professionals to do the research. She thought I was naive for believing the pharmaceutical industry for putting poison into my body. Yeah, like all those supplements and potions have any efficacy. I basically cut her out of my life.

He looks very much like Chadwick Boseman before he died of colon cancer. Colon cancer often leads to a gaunt appearance and wasting at end-stage, not so much from the chemo (if he’s doing that) but because the disease takes over your digestive tract, making it hard to eat or keep down food. The very end stage probably involves a colostomy bag or a stoma and IV feeding tube.

I agree with the consensus above -- usually when a person's face looks that shrunken it means that the cancer is in its final stages and there isn't much time left.

As someone with cancer myself, I couldn’t imagine going the “natural” route and I don’t even have children.
The chemotherapy put me in enormous pain for days after afterward - like my limbs had been beaten with a bat - but my memories were that the actual undiagnosed cancer in my body was far worse. There were years of discomfort and pain. And by reportedly refusing conventional treatment he has reduced his chances to a sliver.
I am so sad for James’ children and for James himself.

For those who did Cologuard instead of a colonoscopy, many people have polyps that are not cancerous but need to be removed because they can become cancerous eventually. Cologuard is not great at detecting polyps and is not a substitute for the whole procedure. It is better than nothing, however.

He had a responsibility to that huge family to try traditional treatment. The straights love making babies but you have to take care of them too.
And before the racists from upthread start again, not taking care of your kids is universal, unfortunately.

As a cancer survivor myself, I hate to question anyone’s treatment. It is hard to believe, however, that he is in this sort of shape if he went the traditional route. With surgery and chemo, stage three colon cancer is very beatable. He has means and surely has access to a top cancer center. It’s possible he is a statistical anomaly, but also possible he followed his known MAHA wife down a bad road.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 24, 2025 11:01 AM |
R135, as someone who had stage one colon cancer caught by routine colonoscopy, I always dissuade people from getting Cologaurd. I had five polyps, four fine and one a small tumor. I know that with Cologuard you are prescribed a followup colonoscopy if things look weird, but I feel like there is too much room for error and patient negligence. Just get them damn colonoscopy. It’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and it can save your life. It did mine.

Drastic weight loss could be from cancer’s return — or could be from the temporary hell of treatment, if he’s going conventional medicine after all. We’ve had examples of both in my own family. The “cancer sucks” cliche is all too real.
It’s sad to see James like this. I hope he makes it.

Colorectal cancer symptoms to know
Changes in bowel movements may have been Van Der Beek’s first colorectal cancer symptom, but it’s certainly not the only sign of the disease.
Other symptoms of colorectal cancer include:
Abdominal bloating, cramps or discomfort
Alternating diarrhea and constipation
Constipation
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
Stools that are thinner than normal
Unexplained weight loss
Awareness of these symptoms and their potential link to colorectal cancer is important, Dr. Kachaamy says, especially because many of them are often overlooked by young patients. That’s because of young patients’ age, in part, but also because symptoms like blood in the stool can be attributed to other causes, like digestive issues or hemorrhoids.
“Younger patients tend to have a lot of reserves, and their symptoms might persist for a long time before they lead them to seek medical care,” he says. “Symptoms such as bleeding, change in stool caliber and bowel habits and/or frequency should alert someone to discuss it with their clinical provider.”

I've had colorectal cancer (now gone, gone, gone). I had part of my colon removed, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. (No, I don't wear a bag.) I never considered solely nutritional therapy or supplements. I am very thankful to the oncology and infectious diseases teams at UVMMC.
Every patient goes on a different journey. The map may be the same, from disease to cure, but there are so many side stops, eddies in the current. It's the same, but different. I can't hate on James for picking whatever his regimen is. The patient makes the decision. And you have to support them whatever they decide. You don't have to agree with it, but you support the patient.
(Weird coincidence -- James Van Der Beek went to the same college I graduated from, though year later, so I feel a sort of kinship.)

[R148] Every patient can of course make their own decisions, though I’d argue that a father of 6 kids under 16 should go with the treatment that gives him the past odds of living the longest.
I keep mentioning that James has made several references to non-traditional treatments because I don’t want other cancer warriors to feel discouraged or to think that their cancer will progress so quickly. Most patients with stage 3 cancer who follow doctor recommended protocols live at least 5 years post-diagnosis. James looks like he won’t live three, sadly.
Congrats to you in your successful battle and I wish you continued good health.

Colon Cancer here, as well.
I had a cheaper Kaiser plan and it was nine months wait for an in-network oncology appointment.
I switched to an equally evil mega-insurer, paid an increased monthly cost of $320 and now I get seen within a two-week span.
If your insurance sucks, those tumors will use that time to grow, grow, grow. Mine went from 3.1cm to 8.7cm. The pain was bad enough that I was living on soups and protein shakes.
I lost 20 pounds I didn’t need to lose, before getting meaningful treatment. Since January, I’ve put five pounds back on and I want the other fifteen. Plus, this skin is saggy, so I want the weight to be high quality muscle. I’ve developed a gut since my colon surgery and I’d like to use my vanity to get rid of it. I have not had a fucking gut since high school. Fuck cancer.

I cured mine with lipo and herbs!
Oh, wait..
by Anonymous | reply 161 | September 24, 2025 4:40 PM |
I delayed getting diagnosed by a year because I was afraid of chemo, getting a bag and losing my hair. Consequently I was diagnosed stage 3b. I'm fine now but I can see it was ignorance and stupidity on my part. I was not seeing any doctors prior to my cancer and that too is stupid. You want pre-existing relationships for when a crisis comes.
Make sure you get the Signatera test when your tumor is removed. It's more expensive and a far better predictor of recurrence than the standard CEA.

That photo of a gaunt JVB is so sad
Unrelated: I heard a rumor for years that JVB was having an affair with Dawson's Creek co-star John Wesley Shipp - anyone have any inside intel to know if it was true? I assume JWS is the closet, since he cruised me at a Weho gas station in the early 90s when I was young

In the early '00s, a friend of mine in NYC said he was at a party with a tipsy Katie Holmes and she said of Van Der Beek, "We all know he's gay and he should just come out."

R40 doesn't know what stage III colorectal cancer means.
"Other organs" means stage IV. With stage III the cancer has spread beyond the colon wall to nearby lymph nodes, not to other organs.
Christ, these dimwitted "experts."
by Anonymous | reply 177 | September 26, 2025 2:37 AM |
Let's repeat. Stage 4 is metastasis. Stage 3B and C mean lymph node involvement. Unlike pancreatic and ovarian cancer, colon cancer has a decent cure rate and is not usually caught too late in the cycle to do anything about it. Not all cases require ostomies, which really depend on the location o f the tumor. Much of the surgery is either laparoscopic or robotic leaving tiny scars. Some Stage 2s don't require chemo. Do familiarize yourself with the symptoms and have a baseline colonoscopy at 45. Chemo can come before surgery to shrink the tumor and make it easier to remove. It can come after to eradicate errant cells. Only 5-10 percent of cases are hereditary but if there is a high incidence in your family, insurance may cover testing. In the meantime, have a high fiber diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, avoid processed foods especially processed meat, exercise and you know the drill about smoking and drinking. None of these are magic but they can't hurt.
