Stadium Concerts
Over the last few years, I’ve been to more stadium pop concerts than usual— Taylor Swift, Madonna, Charlie XCX, Kylie, Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and on and on. I accompany my teenage niece.
They seem so interchangeable: music cranked up so loud that voices get mildly distorted, frenetic background dancers, laser lights, star gets hoisted up in the air for a few songs, constantly changing background, forced conversation with the audience (“How you doing, New York?!”), new costume every 15 minutes, no solid theme tying the show together. These concerts are all rooted in Madonna’s 1980s extravaganzas.
They’ve become mindnumbingly predictable.
Granted, none is a song stylist. Whitney and Barbra, for example, never needed all these distractions around them. Can’t anyone trying to be even an ounce more original?
Next up, Lorde. Lord, help me. Thank god for Loops.

I think I'm done with concerts forever. The last one is 2019.
Partly because of what OP describes, partly because the costs just aren't worth the result. And partly because Ticketmaster is horrific, and every interaction I have with them leaves me swearing never to go to a concert again.
But mostly because other people are, quite honestly, horrifying and no longer know how to act in public. Most do not care if they are blocking someone, or making noise, or distracting in any way from someone else's enjoyment of a concert. They want what they want and fuck everyone else.

You should have taken her to see Queen Bey then yall would have gotten an experience. You took her to see Madge? Did she like it?

Op here, forgot to mention, of all those shows, surprisingly, I enjoyed Olivia Rodrigo the most. She didn’t have as many of those extraneous things. For someone in her 20’s, she an amazingly bold, in-your-face, confident performer. I couldn’t take my eyes off her

R2, yes, I took her to Madge. She didn’t know most of the songs but did love the show

When I was at Madison Square Garden in NYC, I noticed that, no matter where you sit on the sides, you’re far from the performers. Only if you’re standing by the stage, are you anywhere near. Even then, they’re standing on a stage way above you.
Stadiums, generally, aren’t great venues to see concerts, although they’re often the only options for big stars

OP and the prices they charge for this mass hysteria is off the charts. Keep in mind, when a 'tween' wanst to go to one of these concerts, that means usually she has to bring friends and siblings and an adult has to go, too - so multiply one pricey concert ticket by four or five.
R2 I'm with you. The new public behavior (and what's acceptable) is outrageous. I cut out concerts long ago, as well as movie theaters. I just don't find myself enjoying either with how the public behaves in these places. I've also cut way back on how many times I go to the theater - even the audiences at Broadway shows have become unbearable, and management has no control. Patti Lupone was right when she said in interviews years ago that the audience behavior has changed - and not for the better.

[quote]Ticketmaster is horrific
Indeed:
The Federal Trade Commission is suing Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation, over allegations of illegal and deceptive business practices that it says resulted in consumers paying "significantly more" than the face value of a ticket.

I don't go to concerts anymore because of the cell phones. The last concert I attended everyone seemed more interesting in recording the concert than watching it so I had hundreds of bright cell phones looking me in the face throughout a concert I paid a ridiculous amount for. Do these idiots really go home and rewatch the whole concert that they failed to watch in the theater?

I want to the Dua Lipa concert last night. She performed her heart out but the whole thing seemed generic—the same as every other concert I’ve seen recently.
For me (as an elder gay) was when she brought out Nile Rodger for a great rendition of “Le Freak.” At least half the audience had no idea what the song way.
Anyway, I paid $200/ticket and Ticketmaster added on $40 on fees! I’m quickly aging out of the stadium concert audience—but I can’t understand how kids are affording these prices

When the FTC finds illegal actions, we’ll all get a check for 5 cents
