Cool Redford, Normal Dunaway, & Chilling Von Sydow in "Three Days of the Condor"

Three Days of the Condor is informed by the post-Watergate era & certainly doesn't seem far-fetched today. Condor feels sleek, w/ timeless stars and NYC locations, but filmed naturalistically. Robert Redford as the man on the run is at the height of his '70s stardom; Faye Dunaway is appealing in non-neurotic mode; Cliff Robertson in his smarmy villain era; and Max Von Sydow is brilliant as the assassin. My look at the top-drawer political thriller:

Finally, a good one…

A rarity

Watched it last night. I loved the scenes with Max Von Sydow.

by Anonymousreply 3September 20, 2025 11:58 PM

No really its’s good-very suspenseful.

by Anonymousreply 4September 21, 2025 12:46 AM

I'm sure it's good. Redford just never pulled me into the theatre. I only saw Way We Were because of Barbra.

by Anonymousreply 5September 21, 2025 12:50 AM

I watched this on youtube. Fay looks frumpy imncomparison to the leading man. The film makes no sense but its a great time capsule.

by Anonymousreply 6September 21, 2025 12:56 AM

The way Redford's character treats Dunaway's is reprehensible. He abducts her and holds her captive and has sex with her. Ruined the whole movie for me.

by Anonymousreply 7September 21, 2025 1:06 AM

It's ridiculous r7. But is it "r@pe r@pe". Redford was in his prime.

by Anonymousreply 8September 21, 2025 1:09 AM

Faye and Reford have no chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 9September 21, 2025 1:30 AM

I saw this is the theater when it came out in 1975, and I remember liking it -- but not enough to see it again.

Damn -- I'm an old, old woman.

R7 I remember seeing this scene in a theater when I was in high school. Lost respect for the Redford character at that point. Really ruined the movie. Wonder whose idea that was?

by Anonymousreply 11September 21, 2025 1:37 AM

The very end of this movie, always chilling, is particularly horrifying now.

by Anonymousreply 12September 21, 2025 6:12 AM

The movie was so much better than the book.

by Anonymousreply 13September 21, 2025 6:14 AM

and John Houseman as Mr. Wabash.

by Anonymousreply 14September 21, 2025 11:43 AM

The opening scenes have rain. I wonder if they faked it or waited till the weather was really raining?

by Anonymousreply 15September 21, 2025 11:53 AM

This was a big box office hit back in the day. It may not be the best movie but it's hard to imagine a movie like this being popular today. Too many brain cells needed.

by Anonymousreply 16September 21, 2025 2:11 PM

If Redford and Dunaway were young today they'd have to bulk up and play superheroes.

by Anonymousreply 17September 21, 2025 8:10 PM

Dunaway just trusting Redford for no rational reason makes no sense . It undermines the whole movie.

by Anonymousreply 18September 21, 2025 8:16 PM

She probably concluded that if he was untrustworthy at least she'd die happy, R18. As would half of DL.

by Anonymousreply 19September 22, 2025 1:48 AM

Von Sydow was extremely compelling in Citizen X. I forgot who he was when I saw that.

by Anonymousreply 20September 22, 2025 1:54 AM

Call me perverse but did anyone else laugh when the woman at the front desk got shot?

by Anonymousreply 21September 22, 2025 2:35 AM

That was Helen Stenborg.

I just rewatched this. I don't think I'd say that Dunaway's character was in "non-neurotic mode" at all! There is something definitely wrong with her -she seems to have a perverse need to be mistreated or controlled. She is quite willing to have Redford fuck her (as most of us would be), and thereafter behaves like a wild animal that's been tamed. At the end of the film she seems content to just go on to Vermont and her boyfriend as if nothing happened. All that seems neurotic to me!

Ah the symbolism of the rain now stopped when Redford heads back to the office.

by Anonymousreply 24September 22, 2025 4:31 AM

I was waiting for Tina Chen to break out some kung-fu moves.

by Anonymousreply 25September 22, 2025 4:34 AM

He got over his dead girlfriend pretty quickly.

by Anonymousreply 26September 22, 2025 11:03 AM

I like how when Redford finds all the bodies in the office there is no music, only the sound of the printers.

by Anonymousreply 27September 22, 2025 12:46 PM

Ooh a shot of the World Trade Center.
