Meh.

Let's get real now. In real life, an M would never pull a primo hot piece of cock like a Redford.

by Anonymousreply 6September 20, 2025 8:10 PM

Two people playing themselves. Should be called Out of Actors.

by Anonymousreply 7September 20, 2025 8:13 PM

Klaus Maria Brandauer should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

by Anonymousreply 8September 20, 2025 8:16 PM

Largely forgotten because it's overrated. Color Purple should have won Best Picture.

Meryl and Redford have zero chemistry.

The production seemed pretty old-fashioned for 1985. When I watched it a few years ago I thought to myself that I imagine why it was reviewed quite well was out of a sense of nostalgia, that this type of movie was going to disappear, so give it a fond send-off.

by Anonymousreply 10September 20, 2025 10:32 PM

^^^I think this is true, though it did make an encore with the (better) The English Patient, where it swept the Oscars are over again.

The strange thing about Out of Africa is that it is weakest in exactly the part that was supposed to be Pollack’s strong suit—the love story. Sorry to be saying this this week, but if Redford and Pollack had made his character as interesting as those of Streep and Brandauer, even without an accent, the movie might be the classic it aspires to be. Instead we get Redford’s usual—flawed, possibly too withholding, but still the golden hero.

Between the cinematography by gay David Watkin and the John Barry score, the movie might be at its best in its opening credits sequence. It is, disappointingly, never that thrilling again.

Not very good, even the score.

by Anonymousreply 12September 21, 2025 2:46 AM

To each his own, R12.

by Anonymousreply 13September 21, 2025 2:57 AM

Redford was the weak link. He was miscast and not up to the demands of the part.

I believe there was initial holdup with Streep being cast because she didn’t strike the production team as being sexy enough.

The property was initially developed for Audrey Hepburn, though…. So I’m not sure how much of a hot patootie they expected Karen to be.

Can't wait for it to be released!

by Anonymousreply 16September 22, 2025 6:02 PM

I love this movie! I remember going to it being very ambivalent but it’s amazing.

I do agree, however, that the Color Purple should have won Best Picture

Ahhh haahd a faaahm eeen Ufreeeka, at da future of the Nyong’o Heeeelz.

[quote]Klaus Maria Brandauer should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The 1985 nominees were:

- Don Ameche in COCOON*

- Klaus Maria Brandauer in OUT OF AFRICA

- William Hickey in PRIZZI'S HONOR

- Robert Loggia in JAGGED EDGE

- Eric Roberts in RUNAWAY TRAIN

*winner

I love that scene R4 . For those brief moments in the air, life was absolutely perfect.

by Anonymousreply 20September 22, 2025 6:28 PM

Thank you for posting that R4. That’s my favorite scene in the movie. The cinematography is beautiful.

I miss those epics, but I understand they aren’t for everyone.

I almost never agreed with Gene Siskel, but he wasn’t wrong in saying that while handsome Redford looked like he just stepped out of the safari room at Abercrombie & Fitch.

by Anonymousreply 21September 22, 2025 6:57 PM

R19 Yes, and Brandauer should have won

by Anonymousreply 22September 22, 2025 10:59 PM

Like a lot of guys here I was always an Oscar queen so I was really excited to see this when I was a teenager. I just did not get Brandauer’s Golden Globe win or Oscar nomination.

Now that I’m grown and I watch it, I can appreciate how good he was at making a gold digging aristocrat not sympathetic, but understandable. I don’t think he ever intended to deliberately hurt Karen, but he did.

Let's not forget the reps from the British Empire:

Michael Gough, Leslie Phillips, Suzanna Hamilton, Graham Crowden, and DL Fav Rachel Kempson.
