Justice Souter's Book List

September 17th would have been Justice David Souter's 86th birthday. He passed in May. To celebrate, a former law clerk and friend shared Justice Souter's favorite books list:

Henry Adams, The Education of Henry Adams

Marcel Proust, The Remembrance of Things Past

Herman Melville, Moby Dick

William Faulkner, The Bear (from Go Down, Moses)

Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady

Anthony Trollope, Dr. Thorne

James Boswell, The Life of Samuel Johnson

Kenneth Graham, The Wind in the Willows

Siegfried Sassoon, Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man

Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

Thornton Wilder, Our Town

Henry Beston, The Outermost House

What are DL's thoughts? Souter was definitely the most well read justice.

Great taste

He was such a class act. We need more like him. I love the inclusion of The Wind in the Willows.

Nice legs

I doubt Amy or Neil or Clarence hasn't read a novel in their lives, expect for Ayn Rand.

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2025 7:07 PM

R4 Alito?

by Anonymousreply 5September 20, 2025 7:13 PM

I want to read all the books on his list.

by Anonymousreply 6September 21, 2025 5:34 PM

Hmmm.

by Anonymousreply 7September 21, 2025 5:39 PM

R7 what are you trying to say?

by Anonymousreply 8September 21, 2025 6:17 PM

I agree, r3. And Matt D. may be right...

by Anonymousreply 9September 21, 2025 6:21 PM

OP’s pic makes me wonder if any Annie Proulx stories were on that reading list.

by Anonymousreply 10September 21, 2025 6:22 PM

Who the hell is Henry Beston?

by Anonymousreply 11September 21, 2025 6:33 PM

R10 who?

by Anonymousreply 12September 21, 2025 6:57 PM

I always thought he was gay. Very much a loaner.

by Anonymousreply 13September 21, 2025 10:22 PM

[quote] Very much a loaner.

Did he lend his insight?

by Anonymousreply 14September 21, 2025 10:49 PM

It IS Justice Souter's Book List!

by Anonymousreply 15September 21, 2025 10:49 PM

R13 A misconception. He was very socially active in New Hampshire, he just hated the pretenses of Washington.

by Anonymousreply 16September 21, 2025 11:31 PM

I’m sure he found plenty of salt of the earth types in New Hampshire who wanted to discuss Proust.

by Anonymousreply 17September 21, 2025 11:34 PM

What did he read for fun?

by Anonymousreply 18September 22, 2025 12:17 AM

R18 he just told you

by Anonymousreply 19September 22, 2025 12:23 AM

R12 Google is great exercise.
