Brighton Beach Memoirs on TCM right now!

Unfortunately, I just missed Biloxi Blues.

Dammit.

I absolutely loved Blythe Danner in this movie.

I have a question and don’t mean to throw any shade with it. Why do people watch a movie when aired by a channel, when they can just stream it whenever they want?

by Anonymousreply 2September 20, 2025 4:17 AM

I saw neither.

I have a question, why do I eat old people’s excrement?

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2025 4:31 AM

R2 asks a reasonable question, (and is most likely under 40).

TCM has a whole long-term cult following unlike any other station or network. They have their owns hosts, intros, commercials, etc. It's like one of the few stations left where watching movies can be a community experience.

I couldn't really respond to R2's question, R5, but you answered it perfectly.

The fun thing about watching the show live on TCM is that it's like an event.

For people who grew up before streaming, watching certain movies and shows was like an event.

You would schedule your time and plan to watch these movies or shows, by yourself or with friends.

That's part of what made movie watching so enjoyable.

And the fact that TCM has hosts who give such great historical background information on the movies, as well as insider information that only true Hollywood insiders would know, makes it extra special.

So thank you for pointing it out.

R6 How do you feel about Ben Mankiewicz ? I hated him when he first took over. And it wasn't about missing the iconic Robert Osborne. I though Manc was arrogant and full of himself. I often had to mute him until the movie started.

But it seemed like he just needed some time to relax into the role.

Now I adore him!

by Anonymousreply 7September 20, 2025 5:16 AM

Same here, R7.

I think he's a good replacement for dear Robert.

I like Alicia Malone and handsome Dave Karger, too.

It makes me laugh when Ben name drops his famous uncle, but it does show his connection to these movies.

I especially love it when Ben M. and guest host Mario Cantone appear together, when introducing movies. Ben always seems to perk up just a little bit more when Mario is on set.

They were really fun together, introducing "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?"

R9 Wow! It's been 23 fucking years? SHIT..... and I never heard that story.

I just assumed Ben walked in, said "I'm Joe's kid" and got hired! It might have explained why he was so awful those first few months.

by Anonymousreply 10September 20, 2025 5:34 AM

R9 Also, Meghan McCain hears that story, rolled her eyes and exclaimed, "yeah, right!"

by Anonymousreply 11September 20, 2025 5:35 AM

The Goodbye Girl is on at 2am followed by The Sunshine Boys.

by Anonymousreply 12September 20, 2025 5:56 AM

Marsha Mason was SUCH a bad actress. I can't believe she received an Oscar nom for The Goodbye Girl.

by Anonymousreply 13September 20, 2025 7:52 AM

Was she a nepo-wife?

by Anonymousreply 14September 20, 2025 9:23 AM

Blythe Danner is awesome in this. How did she produce such an unpleasant daughter?

by Anonymousreply 15September 20, 2025 10:22 AM

I have asked that question so many times, R15.

I'll never understand how the lovely Blythe Danner produced the completely insufferable Gwyneth Paltrow.

I simply don't want to imagine that Blythe was fine with how her daughter turned out.

by Anonymousreply 16September 20, 2025 3:40 PM

For anyone who missed them last night, Biloxi and Brighton are both on the TCM app.
