I think this is what is called "soft diplomacy." King Charles would not do this unless his Prime Minister and the government asked him to. or approved it. With Tariffs and Ukraine it's important to try to find some way to neutralize Trump if he doesn't cooperate. Putin is violating air space in Poland and Romania. We have already fucked up with India and they a re now cozying up to China big time. Trump is easy t o flatter and he loves the pomp and the carriage rides. Though WTF Stephen Miller is on this trip mystifies me. I get it. Rubio and the Treasury guy. But why Miller?

Donald Trump has never been one to keep his feelings on people’s appearances a secret, and so the first thing he said when he greeted Princess Kate this morning shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
Upon their arrival to the grounds of Windsor Castle, the U.S. president and first lady Melania were greeted by members of the royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Following their descent from Air Force One, the American couple shook hands with the royals, where Trump got the opportunity to say hi to Kate personally—whom he last saw in 2019. As he addressed the princess, he said “You’re so beautiful, so beautiful,” according to reports from Hello! magazine and The Independent.
Then, when greeting Prince William, Trump reportedly called him “my friend.”
This is not the first time the Trumps have visited the British royal family. In fact, their trip this time around (expected to last from September 17 to 19) marks an unprecedented second state visit for a U.S. president.
Despite reports that there were hesitations among members of the British government, the prime minister, Keir Starmer, pushed forward with the visit, and an official invitation was sent out in February. Then, in June, Charles signed an official “manu regia,” which puts the processes of a state visit into motion.
The last time Trump and Melania visited the royal family was in 2019, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Leading up to their visit, there were protests across the U.K., which have been happening again in the lead-up to this visit. Time will tell how Trump will behave, and how the United Kingdom will react, throughout the next two days.

Extremely unlikely, but they do need to acknowledge the Office of President, no matter whom fate has cast in the role. And as we know, fate is currently testing global diplomacy to the utmost.
It takes seasoned maturity to handle a super-powerful baby, and the Royals did that supremely well. As for love, I didn't detect an ounce of that in Charles's final steely look and handshake with Trump. Rather, huge relief at having done all necessary to flatter the monster, more than necessary, and immensely more than he ever deserved.

We know he loves flattery and, when he's on side, he'll give us more favourable deals plus - should the worst happen - he'd provide us with military support. Snubbing Trump would be unwise.

The royals signal their true feelings in symbolic ways. William and Kate are personal friends with the Obamas. When he was president, he was invited to their personal home and hung out with Prince George in his pajamas. The Queen wore a brooch given to her by the Obamas when Trump visited the first time. Both of these were messages to the world as to whom they truly support. Trump is just someone they have to endure.

Trump ballyhooed the fact that he had two state visits toUK.
The late Queen Queen and Prince Philip invited the Obamas to Windsor as their private guests, and Philip (and she as I recall) picked them up when the helicopter landed on the grounds of the Castle and drove them back to the Castle. That indicates the late Queen's true feelings.
Starmer's gov't and the BRF put on the show for the racist, sexist, irresponsible imbecile and the lampshade behind the gates to shield them from a public that holds no esteem for those grifters. That spoke volumes.
We should all be up in arms about the imbecile's son's-in-law pride of place at the Dinner. The MAGA crowd still foams at the mouth about Hunter Biden. Hunter was smaller than small potatoes next to Tiffany's husband and in-laws when it comes to grifting.

Donald Trump confused onlookers with a bizarre speech to King Charles III and guests at Wednesday evening’s state dinner that included factual errors about the number of U.S presidents who have had the honor of visiting Windsor Castle.
“It is a privilege to be the first American president welcomed here,” said Trump, 79. “And if you think about it, a lot of presidents, and this was this was the second state visit and that is the first. Maybe that is going to be the last time—I hope it is, actually." Guests in the room politely chuckled after that line.
It appears Trump was attempting to reference the fact that he is making an unprecedented second state visit to the UK, which no world leader has done before. His first official state visit came in June of 2019.
It is true that this is the first time a president to dine at Windsor Castle on a formal state dinner, but his claim he is the first President to be welcomed at Windsor Castle is false. Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden all visited Windsor Castle during their presidencies. Trump himself took tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in July of 2018.
The speech seemed to embarrass American viewers on social media.
“Does he think he’s the first American president to visit Windsor Castle? Does he not remember that he visited Windsor Castle during his first term? Will anyone ask him why he can’t seem to remember things he’s already done?”, wrote one user on X.
“This was the second, but also the first, maybe the last’... man invented quantum state visits,” joked another user.
“It’s clear it is his 1st 2nd visit, the next will be the 1st 3d visit or perhaps the 2nd 2nd visit, maybe the last thank you for your attention on this matter,” quipped a third.
Trump’s remarks come the evening before his third and final day of his state visit to the UK. On Thursday, Trump is scheduled to talk politics with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after which the two will deliver a joint press conference. While that is going on, Melania Trump, 55, will be touring Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House with Queen Camilla.

Her Late Majesty visited communist China.
She entertained the Ceausescus (despite a warning from the President of France that they would strip their rooms of anything which was not bolted down).
She wrote to Idi Amin to congratulate him on the anniversary of his country’s independence.
She (and Prince Phillip) visited Belfast and shook hands and made small talk with the man widely believed to have ordered the assassination of their uncle.
The Royal Family are the nation’s chief diplomats. They act on the advice from democratically elected ministers, who sometimes feel the need to flatter unsavoury characters who have seized power or who have been gifted it by morons who care only about the price of eggs.
And the RF do their part very well. The elected US President got a lovely parade, full of opportunities to look important, and he got a lovely meal in a very exclusive dining chamber with a smiling Princess and a pally king by his side. And the next day, Mr Starmer got President Trump’s signature on a trade deal worth $150 billion to the British economy.

[quote]President Trump Stuns King Charles with incoherent speech
Just imagine the sort of tenth-rate hack who might be attracted to 'writing' for Trump. Democrat Presidents would have fine writers ten-deep to come up with measured gracious witty speeches fitting for such an occasion. Even William Buckley wouldn't have refused the call from Reagan. But 'writing' for Trump has to be a death-wish for any authorial 'career.'
That said, Trump almost certainly went off-script, to show he knew better, didn't really need any 'writer.' He reached new levels of pathos in asserting how uniquely special his Windsor invitation was. Yes, his hosts knew all that, because they issued the invitation. And nor would any mature adult need to over-assert the fact for the fiftieth time, especially before one of the most sophisticated audiences in the world. But I'm sure it was all what most observers more or less expected.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 19, 2025 7:02 PM |
I've said this on other threads, so might as well here. The state banquet at Windsor wasn't really the great, unique honor Trump thinks it is, though the whole visit was crafted to make Trump feel like it, and he obviously fell for it. The trappings and luxury of royaly, the parade, the carriage ride, inspecting the troops, the gilding at Windsor are what appeals most to Trump and give him a chubby.
In reality, this was a way to keep Trump away from any more personal time with Charles than absolutely necessary. Normally, a second visit from a POTUS isn't a state visit so no parade, banquet, etc. But they do have private tea (actually a meal, not just the beverage and cookies) with the monarch which really is the real honor. Which means having to have a conversation for at least an hour. I cannot imagine Charles being able to endure that without some negativity seeping out. His mother, yes, Charles no. But Trump and those around him probably haven't figured it out.
I've also read that the timing of the visit when Parliament hasn't fully convened so no possibility of Trump addressing them.

Firstly, the royal family, in these matters, does what the elected government of the UK tells them to. Secondly, Prince Philip did not come from a Nazi family. His sisters married German nobles, most of whom joined the Nazi party. But his father, who lived through most of World War II, was no Nazi, and his mother has been honored as among the "righteous" for the risks she took hiding Jews in Greece during World War II.

I repeat, the way things are going in the USA this will go down badly in history, specialky for the royal family. And bad examples from Elizabeth Ii should only have been lessons learned. They are idiots or oblivious.
The worse thing is that anyone with half a head knows now this is meangless. Trump doesnt respect this and will never compromise in anything worth it that they were looking for. Just look what he sais.

That whole visit was such a fiasco. IIRC, the government pushed for the State visit because the Ceausescus floated the idea that they wanted to buy aircraft from some British firm. Elena demanded an honorary Ph.D. . I think the institution balked it was given quietly as a compromise. Turned out afterwards the plane order was all a ruse to get an all expenses paid vacation on the British dime.

This is part of the Royal Family’s purpose, OP. When the British government needs to cement or improve a relationship with another country they use the Royal Family to help smooth over the relationship. For example, George VI and the Queen Mother visited the US right before the start of WWII to help convince the American public of the need to support the UK. Or when Elizabeth II came to the US in 1957, after Anglo American relations were strained by the Suez crisis.

What did your sources tell you she did? This seems surprising since she always strictly adhered to what the government told her to do. It will be interesting to get the details of this since it may give us a different view of her reign.
Charles, on the other hand, did in fact did try to be as cold as he could reasonably be during Trump's first visit.
