Extreme Religiosity and mental illness

As I've navigated the web for many years and partakes in conversations on different sites, I've come to realize a lot of people in this country are extremely superstitious, believing they are being attacked by demons and witches. They are also, not surprisingly, fundamentalist type, biblical literalists. Their posts sound schizophrenic to me. Literally thinking they are under attack by demons.

My question, I guess, is do fundamentalist beliefs cause mental illness or does it attract the unhinged?

^^^^typo....

Narcissism enables people to think Satan and Jesus are fighting for their soul all day. And they have direct conversations with God. And they can make things happen by praying real hard.

by Anonymousreply 2September 18, 2025 4:57 PM

Yes, they do. Fundamental belief systems create thought disorders reinforced by group activity. Many people believe they are speaking directly to God, Jesus or whomever. This affect daily life and contributes to hallucinations among those predisposed to them genetically.

The American Psychiatric Association wanted to label it a disorder. But, politically incorrect.

I think that like the autism spectrum, that there is a schizophrenia spectrum as well. I think fundamentalists find themselves on it. Altho I'm all for it, legal weed and CBD doesn't help.

My crazy pothead MAGAT brother who in 60 years has never set foot in an actual church and called my Catholicism "sucker snake oil" has taken to reading the bible, wearing T-Shirts emblazoned with biblical passages and wearing a 6 inch gold cross and babbling about "the End Times". Think Evangelical superstition and MAGATRY go hand in hand. Six of one cult half dozen of another.

The commonality I find with most relgious people is using a higher power to blame things on. Both good and evil. I didn't have sex with men, the devil lured me into his sin. Forgive me my lord. I didn't due meth in a hotel room with three hookers, the Devil did that. God has a plan (i fucking hate that one). The use of the bible, a book that has been edited and re-written more times than a Dear Abby column, is then interpreted by people whom god talks to. You have to be stupid or mentally ill to just accept these things.

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2025 6:12 PM

I'm guessing that it attracts the nuts. My slut whore former neighbor is a fucking nut with a capital NUT. After she moved out she went fundamentalist christian and now while she whores it up she prays all day online obsessively. whore.

Twitter feels like a 24/7 Christian revival. In the last week, I saw the words "evil" and "demon" and "demonic" over and over again.

The Evangelicals in the US have turned the Christian religion into having a “personal relationship” with invisible Jesus, his ideas and teachings be damned. If you “feel his love” you’re “born again” and “saved,” pretty much no matter how you live your life. Under this system, religion is just an excuse to feel superior (since Jesus is coming to take you to heaven and leave behind all your enemies) and justify your own opinions by searching in the Bible for words that can be read to back you.

It’s no longer Christianity. It’s an entirely different, exclusively American religion that asks nothing but self-regard, glorifies wealth and seeks earthly power to enforce traditional values in the name of God.

These people make me long for and afterlife where they are sentient enough to know they were WRONG about EVERYTHING.

Nothingness does not offer me enough goddamn schadenfreude

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2025 7:02 PM

It doesn't mean anything but from what I've seen in my extended family, the three schizophrenics all became Christian fundamentalists.

The concept that we are at the top of any evolution is very simplistic. I am sure there are beings more intelligent and higher than us but....

Think of it like us and ants. When you walk down the street, you could be causing devastation to an ant colony, destroying entire ecosystems or killing large numbers of thier population without so much as a thought about them. Do we love and care for them? No. Do we guide thier society with laws and rules? No. That makes sense.

Now tell me that we do. We spoke to one ant and told them the rules for thier entire civilisation. We only allow one male ant and one female ant to procreate. All of the rules that govern them, and if they violate the,m we will become angry and murder them. If one of them gets eaten by a spider...well, we have a plan for that poor ant.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

I think being extremely religious most certainly has to do with mental illness, as most people I've met with severe mental illness are super religious, (except me).

As long as you take your psych meds, you should be fine, like me for example. I've battled mental illness since 1985, been hospitalized 11 times, have a host of psychiatric diagnoses, have a medical file larger than the NYC phone book, and have taken literally truckloads of drugs, but I have no feelings other than disgust at organized religion, the bible, etc..

Being crazy also brings in most cases also being religiously crazy.

by Anonymousreply 17September 19, 2025 7:00 PM

No doubt about it - too much religion can make you crazy. Too much religion can make you stupid. And yet, God lives, R15

I have Fundamentalists in my family. One I consider nuts. The other is my former happy-go-lucky youngest uncle who was only a few years older than me. He was influenced by the nutty one, but I can’t see him as mean as the nutty one.

Frankly, yes.

The super religious maga types seem to think the rapture is coming next week. It weirdly interweaves with the ckirk killing /funeral/Isr@el. Tiktok has been insane about this the past couple of days

by Anonymousreply 21September 20, 2025 12:25 AM

I think religion attracts a lot of lonely people who don’t have much of a family or friends. Cults work the same way.

by Anonymousreply 22September 20, 2025 1:15 AM

Go to Reddit and read the lunatics on the christianity sub. Agonizing over loss of virginity before marriage, am I going to hell for masturbating? Climaxing about the rapture and end times, everyone is going to hell for not accepting Jebus, a lot of nasty judgement and lots of "why don't others see how wrong not accepting Jebus is?" and crying that their proselytizing turns people away and they don't understand why as they are just trying to get them to see the error of their ways and save them. Many of them come across as terribly uneducated too. Ignorant of history and science bit many sound batshit crazy and paranoid.

by Anonymousreply 23September 20, 2025 6:18 AM

I think my lucky stars I was never raised in religion.
