ABC Pulls ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Indefinitely After Host’s Charlie Kirk Comments

Disney’s ABC said it would take Jimmy Kimmel‘s popular late-night show off its schedule “indefinitely” after one of the biggest owners of TV stations in the U.S., Nexstar Media, said it would pre-empt airings of the program following remarks the host made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Nexstar said Wednesday that its “owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for the foreseeable future, beginning with tonight’s show.” The company said it “strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”

Boo! Fuck these cowards for giving into Trump

by Anonymousreply 2September 17, 2025 10:55 PM

I record him every night and watch his opening monologue every morning while having breakfast - he's the only one I find 'laugh-out-loud' funny. Not sure what he said which was so offensive - he seemed to be very careful with what he said and condoned political violence.

by Anonymousreply 3September 17, 2025 10:55 PM

Disgusting! Scary! Shameful! I hate what's going on here.

by Anonymousreply 4September 17, 2025 10:56 PM

Fuck that free-speech shit, as long as you praise Trump and Jesus!

by Anonymousreply 5September 17, 2025 10:57 PM

I hate it here.

by Anonymousreply 6September 17, 2025 10:57 PM

Fuck ABC. There isn’t room for them all to be FauxNews-minded. Eventually, they’ll crash and burn from playing along with this idiocy.

by Anonymousreply 7September 17, 2025 10:57 PM

R3 You find Jimmy Kimmel laugh-out-loud funny? Dear lord

by Anonymousreply 8September 17, 2025 10:58 PM

What he said:
The uproar started after Kimmel said suspected Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson was a MAGA Republican. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
Kimmel’s comments about the Charlie Kirk shooting during Tuesday’s show drew condemnation from Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr. That, in turn, prompted one group of ABC affiliates, owned by Nexstar Media Group, to declare they will not air Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the immediate future, which then led ABC to announce the show was being taken off the air “indefinitely.”

r9, this is the rest of the article so far. I don't know if "more to come" means they will update this one or do a new one.

"In his monologue Monday night , Kimmel said that the “MAGA gang” was trying to score political points off Kirk’s murder. Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, was shot and killed Sept. 10 at a debate at Utah Valley University. Three days later, authorities announced they had arrested the suspected shooter.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said.

More to come..

Disgusting but also not surprising. And it’s a warning — SNL better scrap any Trump skits if they want to stay on the air past October.

by Anonymousreply 29September 17, 2025 11:09 PM

Kimmel on BlueSky the day of Kirk's shooting:

Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human? On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.

Not good enough for the party of not-so-free speech, apparently.

by Anonymousreply 51September 17, 2025 11:22 PM

"So you're saying that Kimmel is like a German Nazi diplomat."

Nope. I was saying that, when a Jewish man shot a Nazi, the Nazis used it as a pretext to demonize all Jews and crack down on dissent. Just like conservatives are using Kirk's murder to crack down on dissent

by Anonymousreply 52September 17, 2025 11:22 PM

R44 no dimwit its a loose comparison but provocative. A polish jew killed nazi vom Rath and the response was Kristallnacht on jews in Germany. by Anonymousreply 61September 17, 2025 11:29 PM

He spoke his mind and for that his corporate bosses will fire him, because they are caving (no surprise) to the pressure of an authoritarian-bent government.

Jimmy Kimmel said nothing that could be construed as offensive about a horrible murder.

Speaking of South Park, they didn't air their show this week. Was supposed to be today. They say it's because they weren't finished with it, but if that's the truth, it's only the second time in the show's history that they've ever not done a show when planned because it wasn't complete. I think they weren't finished because there is a battle going on internally with Paramount regarding the content.. Even that show feels the power of Trump during these dark times.

by Anonymousreply 101September 17, 2025 11:57 PM

The mainstream media also caved for years after 9/11. The result was the fast growth of the anti-Bush blogosphere.

We have many more tools than we had in the 2000s. So do they. But Americans don’t typically react well to this kind of censorship.

Everyone should re-read (perhaps I should say READ) Shirer's [italic]The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,[/italic] because what he describes in the latter years of the Weimar Republic is very close to what America is dealing with right now.

Unlike Russia/USSR and its former satellites, Weimar was a strong effort at creating a genuine democracy. Hitler actually gamed the democratic system and levers of government to gain power. Ultimately the people voted in their own destructor.

Use freedom of speech to enthrall audiences.

Use freedom of assembly to hold massive marches and rallies to demonstrate their numbers and intimidate trade unions and "good government" believers.

Use freedom of the press to push your message out, until you get where you want--then shut out all voices other than yours.

Use the voting system to gain a little more in each election, until you've created a huge bloc of party faithful. Then when you have the numbers in the Reichstag, strong-arm the government, worm the top guy into the second-in-command, then look for the opportunity to nudge the #1 out, then Presto! You're now a Fascist regime!

by Anonymousreply 109September 18, 2025 12:06 AM

Isn’t about them wanting to go after Kimmel or his anti-Trump comments tgemeselves. It’s about this and the other TV networks attempting to keep themselves viable and in Trump’s good grace at the sake of anybody or anything going counter our government’s decisions, favors, and wrath.

Their response? Ehhh so what he’s our pedo and he’s hurting the people we hate so fuck it.

by Anonymousreply 136September 18, 2025 12:45 AM

Kimmel said nothing about Charlie Kirk, his comments were about the MAGA Gang who has attempted to distort the facts that his murder was a Mormon raised in conservative Utah, by a conservative NRA Trump supporting MAGA father who taught him how to shoot rifles and raised this kid. 99% of everything in this kids life was conservative but the right wants to blame the left.

I don't watch Kimmel but I don't hate him, just don't watch. In fact I watch almost nothing on ABC, but I do have a HULU subscription which I will be cancelling, if ABC likes cancel culture let them enjoy that.

by Anonymousreply 137September 18, 2025 12:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 139September 18, 2025 12:49 AM

Exactly r137. The new rule is it's not good enough to love and worship St. Charles Kirk. You must also refuse to notice that the Trump Cult is exploiting his death and embrace the newthought that the Left and Only the Left is responsible for all of Tyler's actions.

Fascism comes slowly at first and then all at once.

by Anonymousreply 140September 18, 2025 12:51 AM

My Hulu subscription ends tonight. Fuck you all the way, ABC.

by Anonymousreply 141September 18, 2025 12:51 AM

MAGA don't give a damn about the dozens (at least) of JKL staffers and their families who are affected by this irrational, cockamamie censorship.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" was the only show I watched on ABC and WABC. May be time to cut the cord.

by Anonymousreply 142September 18, 2025 12:53 AM

I would suggest he is the primary of many third rails.

by Anonymousreply 143September 18, 2025 12:53 AM

Meh this was not unexpected at least not to me. Old guard broadcast media is desperately scrambling to stay alive. That's why there are so many mergers going on. These corporate bozos will purge whatever and whomever offends their dwindling customer base which at this point seems to be overrun with MAGA throwback neanderthals. Kimmel and Colbert and any others should go independent. A new direction, untethered from corporate and government parasites, is needed as those old guard media structures continue to collapse. If you're cancelling your subscriptions, bravo! Hasten their collapse because they cannot survive on MAGA dollars alone.

by Anonymousreply 144September 18, 2025 12:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 162September 18, 2025 1:10 AM

The U.S. needs our own "Nepal crowds destroying the government" moment. I'm expecting the current administration will attempt to put some kind of stranglehold on something specific to the younger generations (that the ancient fossils in government dangerously underestimate), and then we'll possibly see to see some coherent revolutionary violence against those clinging to power via authoritarianism. I'm still betting this catalyst being a big war push where the government tries to reinstate the draft. The younger generations overwhelmingly don't watch or read legacy media or follow shows on broadcast stations. They're also under intense pressure because of the shitshow going on, but most of what is going on is only affecting established and outdated institutions that the youngs don't care about. A lot of people feel this attitude to be a huge flaw, but I don't. These old systems need to collapse. For the youth, something that hits closer to home will be the flashpoint. I hope it comes soon. Or, in the alternative, that the demented president fucking dies already.

Kimmel condemned t he shooting very clearly and emphatically. He then condemned political violence. He did this when it happened and he did it again a day or two later. The comments that got him suspended were critical of MAGA. And they came for him. The affiliates were organized by a Trump appointed FCC commissioner who threatened ABC. This is a purge. Colbert, Terry Moran, Jim Acosta, the CBS deal, etc.etc.etc.

by Anonymousreply 174September 18, 2025 1:38 AM

Maryland - September 17, 2025 - Sinclair, the nation's largest ABC affiliate group, objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

As discussed with ABC earlier today, Sinclair decided to indefinitely preempt "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" beginning tonight. Following these discussions, ABC has suspended production of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

"Mr. Kimmel's remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country," said Vice Chairman Jason Smith. "We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities. We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr's remarks today and this incident highlights the critical need for the FCC to take immediate regulatory action to address control held over local broadcasters by the big national networks."

Sinclair's ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during Jimmy Kimmel Live's timeslot.

The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend. In addition, Sinclair is offering the special to all ABC affiliates across the country.

Sinclair will not lift the suspension of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on our stations until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network's commitment to professionalism and accountability.

Sinclair also calls upon Mr. Kimmel to issue a direct apology to the Kirk family. Furthermore, we ask Mr. Kimmel to make a meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA.

Regardless of ABC's plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.

by Anonymousreply 198September 18, 2025 2:26 AM

r193 ABC canceled “Roseanne” Tuesday morning after the show’s lead, Roseanne Barr, let off a series of racist tweets the night prior. The tweets included a comment referring to former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”

Kimmel said on Monday: "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

The late-night host also criticised flags being flown at half mast in honour of Kirk, and mocked the president's reaction to the shooting.

"This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish,"

Corrupt the Judiciary, purge all judges who might/do interfere in your usurpation, so that what's left are the True Believers, the Roland Freislers.

"Other" all inconvenient minorities early, often, constantly. Disposess them, sack them from their jobs/professions, create the idea of them being monsters and despoilers, until simply BEING that minority becomes a criminal offense. Once that happens, you literally can do with/to them whatever you wish to.

Officially, Colbert was canceled. Kimmel was suspended, (although it's probably the end).

Colbert is still scheduled to run thru May 2026....(I might be off on the date).

How much farther will Colbert make it now?

Colbert's producers must be freaking out trying to figure out how to handle this. Ratings-wise, the best thing they could do is bring Kimmel on as Colbert's guest. (which, by contract, ABC wouldn't allow).

What does Colbert say in his monologue?

by Anonymousreply 216September 18, 2025 3:16 AM

I posted about fascism regular during the first Trump administration.

I knew this fucker would win again if he wasn’t dealt with properly from 2020-2024, and sadly, I was correct.

I honestly don’t know if we’re coming back from this. And the scariest part is that we have obscenely wealthy, very powerful people behind the scenes working in consort in order to spread this world wide.

Let me tell you all something- if it’s happened here, it will easily happen elsewhere. All it takes is time, and the relentless unleashing of disinformation & propaganda via social media, and BOOM! Another country bites the dust.

This is not going to stop. These fuckers are going to hammer away day after day, until they get what they want, so understand that unless we come together and create a GREAT, well coordinated movement against them, they will probably win.

How can we change this? 30% of our country, at minimum, either want this, and/or have no clue what’s going on, as they march to the voting booths, mindlessly going down their ballots, checking off for everything that has an “R” next to it.

We MUST win over the hearts and minds of our younger voters. Without them, it’s a very dark future, & I am not sure how that happens, if all they are exposed to are lies.

The left needs a Charlie Kirk. But before they find him, it needs a plan and a message that they connect to.

Where is that plan? Where is that message?

Are we all too caught up in the daily minutiae of Epstein to create one and target our youth? Because I’m going to tell you all right now, crowing about Epstein on a daily basis isn’t what’s going to touch the hearts and minds of people who can’t even afford to live in their own apartment or buy their first home.

We need to move away from this Kirk business. Let the courts take care of it.

Now, we need something new and real that’s OURS, and that stands up and remains resilient, when the rubber meets the road.

One overall message, one leader, one goal: get these fascists out of local to federal government, and keep them out, and MAKE BEING AN AMERICAN AFFORDABLE AGAIN!

by Anonymousreply 217September 18, 2025 3:17 AM

All of this is awful. I loathe the pressure and attacks that Trump and his administration are making simply because they don't like what is being said. These actions by government officials in response to statement that essentially are comments on how our government operates are the MOST protected form.of speech under the First Amendment.

I am more angry at the private companies that are folding to Trump for purely business reasons. Every one of these companies would have a slam dunk suit against the government if it took the threatened action. Look at Harvard and the others who have challenged the government, they are winning every step of the suits because the situation involves a clear constitutional violation.

I think the companies that aren't standing up to protect themselves by suiting may be a larger problem than Trump. He isn't going to stop if the targets don't make him through suit.

Kimmel has been quiet. I can't fathom he will be appearing on ABC again. Would you want to remain employed by a company that won't stand up for its own rights and protect you? He may have to wait out his contract term or negotiate an end to it but his exit is coming.

I have Comcast internet/cable TV (,which owns NBC). NBC likely is the next target. If it folds like ABC and CBS have done, I'm dumping Comcast and will clearly explain to the minion representative why I'm taking my services and cash elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 218September 18, 2025 3:34 AM

R219=Trump Troll

by Anonymousreply 224September 18, 2025 3:46 AM

I assumed the issue with Kimmel’s comments was the part about the shooter being a MAGA supporter, and that’s been reasonably established as untrue.

Other people who’ve gotten slammed for “Kirk had it coming” comments are definitely being subjected to huge over reactions for voicing their opinions, like a doctor who got fired for saying that at work. Sure, it was at work, but in front of a small group and it was an opinion. Kimmel is saying things that aren’t true, isn’t he? And he knows they aren’t true and he knows some people will believe him.

I do not like this witch-hunt environment and I think pulling Kimmel’s show is over the top, but I see a distinction between someone responding inappropriately to a violent death and someone making shit up.

Maybe I’m biased because I have strongly disliked Kimmel since he claimed that he was grateful to the dedicated medical professionals who saved his son who was sick with a heart condition, but sad that if it was a poor kid without insurance he would have died. Which is just nonsense.

I’m not following this closely, so if I’ve gotten something mixed up I’m grateful to be corrected .

by Anonymousreply 225September 18, 2025 3:47 AM

Let's be idiots who blame Democrats for what MAGA Republicans do.

by Anonymousreply 226September 18, 2025 3:57 AM

Boycotting ABC would probably backfire as the MAGAts and their ilk will leave it on 24 hours a day to keep their ratings up.

I hope people realize how dangerous this is, what a huge leap into fascism. The fucked up thing is that after barely eight months, Trump is already on the ropes, weakened by his incompetence and blatant criminality! Instead of getting off the sinking ship, many are eagerly kowtowing to him! Skydance/Paramount is seeking to buy Warner Bros/Discovery for cash. Such monumental media consolidation would never be approved under Clinton, Obama or Biden, but Trump's administration is likely eager to let Edgar Bronfman do whatever he likes!

Which is why Teddy Roosevelt broke that shit up; this kind of mega-conglomerate beast we've seen over the last generation should NEVER have been allowed to be created, or exist.

Airlines buying up their less profitable competitors, then shrinking seating, keeping ticket prices artificially high, eliminating food service, etc.

Cable companies being allowed to purchase other cable companies, local TV/radio stations television and cable networks, newspapers, theme parks, professional sports teams, and more.

Food companies being allowed to buy restaurant chains, alcohol and soft beverage companies, family farms, commercial farms/agribusinesses, biochemical firms (GMO for everybody!).

Petrochemical giants being allowed to buy up their competitors, buy out inventors who've developed alternative energy concepts--then sit on them so the fossil fuel monster continues to roll unimpressed.

On and on and on, [italic]ad nauseam.[/italic]

From last night's essay by historian Heather Cox Richardson:
On the podcast of right-wing influencer Benny Johnson on Wednesday, chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Brendan Carr said that Kimmel’s words were part of a “concerted effort to try to lie to the American people” and that the FCC was “going to have remedies that we can look at.” “Frankly, when you see stuff like this,” he said, “I mean look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
Carr explained: "There's actions we can take on licensed broadcasters. And frankly, I think that it’s really sort of past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney and say…'We're not gonna run Kimmel anymore...because we licensed broadcasters are running the possibility of fines or license revocation from the FCC.'"
I assumed the issue with Kimmel’s comments was the part about the shooter being a MAGA supporter, and that’s been reasonably established as untrue. And he knows they aren’t true and he knows some people will believe him.I’m not following this closely, so if I’ve gotten something mixed up I’m grateful to be corrected .

Yeah, you're mixed up and not really following this but you go right ahead and accuse Kimmel of being a liar in spite of your ignorance.. This is what he said:

"The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

He is accusing Magat of scoring political points by insisting the killer must have been a political enemy of Magat when there was NO EVIDENCE WHO or WHAT HE WAS at the time. Kimmel didn't say it had to be a Magat. My guess is you are though.

by Anonymousreply 278September 18, 2025 12:36 PM
Yeah, this was the plan all along for Kimmel. It was just a matter of ABC waiting for the right moment.

If Kimmel knew that, why did he give ABC the rope to do it? If I had been in his position, I think I would have not let myself fall into the trap of including Kirk in any monologue.

by Anonymousreply 279September 18, 2025 12:53 PM

You know what people aren’t talking about now? Epstein. Kirk’s death has been an awfully convenient distraction, in more ways than one.

by Anonymousreply 280September 18, 2025 12:53 PM

That’s the thing, R278 — he’s not cooperating, hence we have no real idea, only hypothesis as to what motivated him to do this, other than his alleged own words, written to his roommate.

That stated, Kimmel is correct in saying that MAGA are high jacking & twisting the narrative in order to make this a politically motivated murder, when the facts as we know them to be as of now, is that he killed him simply because he didn’t like the shit Kirk said. Again, that doesn’t mean that his motivations were political.

Censoring & pulling the Jimmy Kimmel show, however, IS political.

Just following Project 2025. The head of the FCC now is the man who authored the section on controlling the media via the FCC. They blatanlty told us what they planned to do. And are doing it. No one should be suprised. It is going to get much worse.

by Anonymousreply 289September 18, 2025 2:06 PM

A summary of what Project 2025 said they wanted for the FCC -

If implemented, the Project 2025 proposals for the FCC could lead to:

Platform regulation and more oversight into how social media / tech companies moderate content. Possibly new rules or interpretations of Section 230 to reduce immunity and force more transparency.

More investigations (and maybe enforcement) of broadcasters, public media, and networks over alleged bias or fairness; possibly penalizing or sanctioning them (license renewals, etc.).

Removal or restriction of DEI or “content viewed as biased” programs or policies in regulated entities.

Reshaping of federal broadband programs: targeting funding only to areas that lack service; less emphasis on affordability programs or digital equity if those are viewed as subsidy or regulatory burden.

More aggressive regulation of foreign tech or communications companies (especially Chinese-affiliated ones).

A shift in overall regulatory philosophy: less regulation in some areas (allowing more free market), but more active supervision or enforcement in matters of speech, content, fairness.

Well, it's true that long-established political parties are in trouble all over the world. Practically all through Europe, and now in Japan too, people are tired of the parties that have been in power for 40 or 50 years or more and are turning to upstart parties that come out of nowhere and tend to be more extreme than the established parties.

The problem in the US is that it's all but impossible to start a new party here. The Democratic Party has really wrecked its brand lately, turning people off on all sides. Not many people identify as Republicans these days either. So there aren't many movements for people to coalesce around (except MAGA, unfortunately).

"...viewership for Jimmy Kimmel Live! fell 11% in the month leading up to August 31, 2025, averaging roughly 1.1 million viewers."

Yet Colbert is being cancelled with 2.417 million total viewers. (Q2 2025)

Gutfeld is in an earlier time slot but he gets 3.29 million viewers and: "Comparing this year’s Q2 numbers to the same period a year ago, Gutfeld! was the only show to grow its audience across both key metrics, with a net gain of +31.5% among total viewers, and +24% among viewers in the demo (18–49.)

I imagine ABC has more lucrative plans for 11:30 PM. 1.1 million viewers is peanuts to them.

Kimmel should have been permanently cancelled after The Man Show. Certainly one of the most disgusting shows ever on the air. And I'm not buying his satire bullshit. R335, you were offended by "The Man Show" but completely gloss over Trump, a serial sex offender that a lot of people are saying was at Epstein's island frequently because he was close friends with Epstein for decades? Trump who walked in on teenaged beauty pageant contestants in the Miss USA lockerroom so regularly that it was common knowledge? Trump who said he would date his own (at the time) underaged daughter?

Really? The Man Show was 20 years ago and you're still seething about it, but not a peep from you about Trump himself?

Wow.

Kimmel now has a straightforward suit for damages and forward-looking relief that he can and should file — not just against ABC, but also against the government officials who were the driving force for his embarrassing public disciplining. ...
Kimmel may have contractual remedies against ABC. But he also has a powerful constitutional claim for prospective relief and damages against the federal government much like the one that Trump sought to vindicate in 2021. A principled consistency would require those who objected to the Biden administration’s engagement with social media firms to support Kimmel. (To be clear, I am not holding my breath.)
If Kimmel sues, it wouldn’t just vindicate his own interests: It would be a way of defending a sorely tested bulwark of the free press, one that has come under increasing strain in recent days and months. It would, in other words, be another way for Kimmel to speak truth to misused power — just with fewer jokes.

Interesting r403. I'm not a constitutional lawyer, but I would think that the government, and the president specifically, personally pressuring a corporation to suppress any and all criticism of the president would be a clear violation of the First Amendment, even if they didn't personally arrest him. Yeah, I would actually like to see that case.

In fact, some Republicans who consider themselves defenders of unfettered speech are getting more comfortable with limiting it. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., told Semafor that “an FCC license, it’s not a right. It really is a privilege.”

“Under normal times, in normal circumstances, I tend to think that the First Amendment should always be sort of the ultimate right. And that there should be almost no checks and balances on it. I don’t feel that way anymore,” Lummis added.

“I feel like something’s changed culturally. And I think that there needs to be some cognizance that things have changed,” she added. “We just can’t let people call each other those kinds of insane things and then be surprised when politicians get shot and the death threats they are receiving and then trying to get extra money for security.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said he’d “suppose” Carr could have kept quiet and let pressure build naturally but had no problem with the chair’s comments.

“I didn’t think it was that scary. I think Jimmy Kimmel made it pretty easy for the company,” said Cramer, who often says he’s not easily offended. Carr’s comments, he argued, “were so veiled.” Title iconKNOW MORE It’s been a challenging week for Republicans who are mourning Kirk while digesting Trump’s vows to pursue a wide-ranging crackdown on left-leaning political activity and speech. Some prominent members of the party are defending the rights of Americans to speak freely as long as it doesn’t cross the line into inciting violence, a position that Kirk himself took in the past.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who cosponsored legislation with Lummis this year that would prohibit the government from ordering social media companies to constrain speech on their platforms, is in a unique position. Paul is one of few Republicans openly willing to criticize the Trump administration, but he also suffered a violent assault in 2017 that he has said affects his stance on public speech.

“You can lose your job over things you say, and that’s not an infringement on speech unless the government did it,” Paul told Semafor when asked about Carr’s comments. “Now, the government commenting about it? I don’t think that’s the same as the government making an edict saying they should fire somebody.”

Add Karl Rove to the list of Republicans speaking up this week to defend and protect all of us. From Heather Cox Richardson's latest post:
But the uproar over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel brought to light a different, far more American, division in this country. Americans could divide along partisan lines so long as the guardrails of a secular, evidence-based, liberal democracy remained in place. But as the Trump administration smashes through those guidelines, it appears that rather than being divided along partisan lines, Americans are beginning to realign as “We the People” against a wannabe authoritarian.
Yesterday, Republican political strategist Karl Rove, who was a key member of President George W. Bush’s administration, pushed back against the friends and enemies distinction in the Wall Street Journal. “No,” he wrote. “Charlie Kirk wasn’t killed by ‘them.’ ‘They’ didn’t pull the trigger. One person did, apparently a young man driven by impulse and a terrible hate. If there were a ‘they’ involved, law enforcement would find ‘them’ and the justice system would hold ‘them’ accountable. But ‘he’ and ‘him’ are the correct pronouns for this horrendous act…. Using Charlie’s murder to justify retaliation against political rivals is wrong and dangerous. It will further divide and embitter our country. No good thing will come of it.”

I didn't find him funny. He was like a walking white privilege, someone who could not have been employed on any objective meitmerit based standard. But he was willing to shit talk Donald Trump, and that's something we should all support wherever it comes from.

Just the opposite R472. If you read a recent poll of young voters who voted REPUBLICAN i 2024, you'd know 1) a majority support socialized medicine; 2) a mjaority support free college; 3) a slight majortiy support seizing billionaire assets; and 4) a minority of 40% favor nationalization of industries such as banking and oil and gas. So yes Ben Shaprio and Charlie Kirk persuaded a bunch of them to vote for sexism, racism, and homophobia. BUT they were unable to sell ANY of the tepublican economic program, so they are toast right now. And realistically with Reagan tripling the national debt, GW Bush doubling it again, and Trump sending it into the stratosphere, the only way to save the country from a hard crash is to seize billionaire assets and nationalize banking and oil and gas. These morons have painted us all intoa corner

I cancelled Disney today and that's it for Disney. This is the second time they have capitulated to Trump/MAGA and I will proudly illegally torrent download anything they produce in future which I want to watch.

The bottom line is that by continually capitulating to demands from Trump, Disney are helping Trump and MAGA destroy the USA. They own this. I hope it was worth it for them. From what I can see online, a lot of people have cancelled Disney and Hulu today. So Disney and the companies they own will get the mergers they want - but who is going to watch and pay for it of they have a significant loss of customers? Again - I hope it was worth it for them.

by Anonymousreply 477September 19, 2025 2:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 478September 19, 2025 2:06 PM

Fallon is in a tough spot because his political comedy has always been mild and soft. If he turns it up, he loses a good portion of whatever fanbase might otherwise follow him elsewhere on top of getting canceled. Of course, I'm not saying that justifies his softness during these times when speaking out is so important, especially since its not like he's starving for money but he knows his audience.

From a Kimmel staffer:

"I'm not unbiased. I love Jimmy, he's a great person to work for and I think just about everyone on the show would say we're lucky to be part of this. But it's been hard for him in the past few years. Struggles personally, and once Trump became president the number of threats and attention he received from Trump supporters increased. I don't know all the details, but I know it has been bad at times. Not just for him, but for some of the people working on the show.

At least for me, the show itself has been great. But everything around it has sucked. Because it was becoming increasingly clear in recent weeks that Sir Iger and the ABC executives would cut us loose in a second if they thought something we did might hurt attendance at Disney World or cost anyone their annual bonus."

A lot of pundits and even President Obama are telling the networks to fight back. And telling them they can still fight for their business deals. But the fact is, I believe the reason they don't fight back is that they have no confidence in our courts. Because along with everything else, our court system has been compromised. So it's easier to just cave in. And the corporate guys laugh at Trump because he is so easily appeased. They have these multi million dollar deals on the table and all he wants them to do is publicly off someone he doesn't like and they get what they want. Easy peasy.

I think Carr’s threat means he has a case against the government.

The Supreme Court recently ruled 9-0 that the government can’t coerce private companies to censor on its behalf.
National Rifle Association v. Vullo: In a May 30, 2024, decision, the Court ruled 9–0 that government officials cannot use their regulatory power to threaten businesses into suppressing disfavored speech. The case involved a New York state official who allegedly coerced banks and insurers to cut ties with the NRA.

Hulu offers retention incentives year-round, as do most streaming services (and most digital editions of major newspapers). Usually the lower price is only honored for two to three months and then you're billed at the usual rate. Hulu also has an annual Black Friday or Cyber Monday promotion that gives you a year's subscription for $0.99 per month. It's unclear whether that will continue as they continue tinkering with its Disney+ integration.
I cancelled my Hulu Disney+ bundle the night the news broke and no lower price incentive was offered during my cancellation, so they've just started this new retention offer

Retention offers are sometimes targeted and you might've met one of the exclusion criteria. One of Hulu's most common retention offers of the past several years is $2.99 per month for six months, with a free Disney+ add-on. Don't get me wrong, I hope they suffer greatly over this, but this is standard from them so far and people might get too complacent if they think the pressure's already causing them to cave. If they sweeten the pot a bit more it'll be a better indication they're freaking out.

by Anonymousreply 524September 19, 2025 9:25 PM

If they voted with the Dems we could stop the excesses and the irresponsible amateurish behavior of the Trump Administration. I'm kind of tired of the constant reportage of the latest bad decision. I want the Dems to come up with a fucking plan. I want an assignment. Writing calling members of Congress, and harassing them. Finding out where they dine and where they play. They need to be afraid of us voters, not Trump. Those town hallswhere they got booed shook them up. They are not made of stone. Otherwise we can watch as masked men grab people off the street and funding cuts for scientific research, and bad business deals, and tariffs fuck us up beyond recognition. "Mr. Kimmel’s words were only mildly offensive."

"We want to be clear that none of this justifies the right’s resort to regulatory censorship."
As a private company, Disney has the right to run or cancel shows as it wishes. Perhaps in this case it saw pressure from government as an excuse to drop Mr. Kimmel, who had turned his show into a daily anti-Trump diatribe. But anyone who thinks this is the free market at work is ignoring the ways government can punish companies. Disney’s executives had to look out for the best interests of their shareholders and the Disney brand.

R476 = That Fallon Article was a well deserved shellacking .----------------------->>>>

------->>>We didn’t get to this spinelessness overnight. It took decades of weakening resolve to deliver someone so irresolute. [bold]Fallon was incredibly good looking in the early aughts, granting him decades of fame that an equally talented but less attractive man wouldn’t have experienced. Despite no longer looking like the trim, boyish charmer from his days at Saturday Night Live, he still squawks nightly from his perch at The Tonight Show. With unbearable fake laughter and a willingness to bring on guests like Greg Gutfeld and Trump, Fallon has impressively produced years of virtually unwatchable late-night television that has no point-of-view.

Despite offering vague platitudes in response to his peers' political silencing, his lukewarm monologues and largely risk-free approach to comedy hasn’t kept Fallon safe. Trump is still calling for Fallon to be removed from air. The Tonight Show’s ratings are perpetually struggling. There’s no benefit to Fallon neutrality. Still, as (increasingly plausible) threats are lobbed by the administration to silence Fallon, he’s showing his belly.

Your meekness won’t save you Jimmy Fallon. It just makes you useless to the rest of us. [/bold]

Great post, R540!

Thanks for sharing.

See? That’s what I’m saying too.

Stand up & deliver NOW, because the overloads are about to cancel people left & right, no matter what.

Late night is dead. These shows are losing money night after night. At least CBS was honest when they canceled Colbert, no matter how he and his fan club framed it. The same is true with Kimmel. ABC jumped on the first excuse they could to close down the show. If there were millions more eyeballs on these shows and tons of ad revenue rolling in, they could rip on Trump every night without a problem.

by Anonymousreply 546September 20, 2025 1:29 PM

R546, I don’t believe CBS. Nobody wakes up and suddenly realizes that they’re losing millions of dollars. Show business accounting has always been a scam. On paper, almost every project “loses money” and generates enormous tax write-offs.

by Anonymousreply 547September 20, 2025 1:40 PM

R547 If the country is split 50/50 in their political beliefs, then you have the three networks splitting half the limited late viewers while the other 50% has one option - Gutfeld. That math is mathing.

by Anonymousreply 548September 20, 2025 1:50 PM

R546, maybe you missed Brendan Carr and Trump going on and on for MONTHS about how they think networks should get their broadcast license pulled for criticizing Trump. Maybe you missed Carr and Trump saying they have the power to block mergers if the networks don't do what they want

by Anonymousreply 549September 20, 2025 2:22 PM
If aanyone has ideas now is the time to speak up.

Easy - as a local TV weatherman posted on X, start an advertiser's boycott against Sinclair and Nexstar stations.

- do a search to see what local TV stations in your market are distributed by Sinclair or Nexstar;

- spend some time watching the station to determine who advertises there;

- contact those advertisers and inform them you refuse to purchase their products until they pull their advertising from that station.

If the US public can get this going at scale it will absolutely fuck up Sinclair and Nexstar and force them to back off. Money is the only thing they respect or understand.

by Anonymousreply 550September 20, 2025 2:34 PM

R549 Even Michael Eisner calls these threats “aggressive, yet hollow.” If the networks wanted to fight, they certainly could and probably win.

by Anonymousreply 551September 20, 2025 2:47 PM

Can we as consumers sue Nexstar and Sinclair? For illegal censorship or Whatever. I mean the they broadcast to the public. And add Fox and their lies and Brian Kilmeade inciting murders of the homeless. I don't know. Not a lawyer but I would definitely find some way to express public outrage. Boycotts of advertisers is fine, but big demonstrations outside their offices is great too. Good visuals. I guess I'm saying we ought to be asking ourselves What Would MAGA do? because they scream and threaten and behave like scalded cats and they refuse to stop. They're annoying as hell, and it works.

by Anonymousreply 552September 20, 2025 3:08 PM
Easy - as a local TV weatherman posted on X, start an advertiser's boycott against Sinclair and Nexstar stations.

People have been saying we should do that with Fox News advertisers for decades. How's that working out?

by Anonymousreply 553September 20, 2025 3:30 PM

R546 I mean...if it was about ratings, why is Kimmel being offered his job back IF he apologizes and donates money to Kirk's foundation? GTFOH

Both networks had/have mergers, and the WH stipulated that you must get rid of Colbert and Kimmel because they've hurt Trump's widdle feelings.

Who actually believes this is because of ratings? JESUS CHRIST

by Anonymousreply 568September 20, 2025 9:34 PM

R546 this is bullshit. At his last contract, Kimmel was determined to leave. For whatever reason, ABC desperately wanted him to stay. One of the things ABC offered was summers off.

They were definitely not looking for a way to get rid of him. In fact, they're trying to keep him as we speak.

by Anonymousreply 569September 20, 2025 9:43 PM

R569 Kimmel has a few months left on his contract. And other sources say ABC was looking for ways to cut him loose. It all depends on what news sources you read and their particular point of view.

by Anonymousreply 570September 20, 2025 10:18 PM

If ABC was looking for a way to cut Kimmel loose, they picked the worst way possible to do it.

Still TBD if a court will determine if breach of contract still applies when there's only a few months left on a contract.

by Anonymousreply 571September 20, 2025 10:26 PM

Let’s just agree this is a fluid situation that seems to be creating news updates every few minutes and lots of hot takes by talking heads of varying points of view. As for me, I don’t really like any of the involved parties. Let’s just hope there’s not an awful precedent set.

I assume there will be guardrails and proper oversight put in place. Kimmel wouldn’t have been in this situation if established standards and practices were enforced.

by Anonymousreply 575September 20, 2025 11:03 PM

"Established standards"? Sorry, the country's never been in the position before of the POTUS demanding that a public company employee be terminated because of his hurt feelings and that company complying with his threats and demands.

by Anonymousreply 576September 20, 2025 11:08 PM

Yes r573 in a few weeks I'll forget all about "Kimmel, Kimmel, Kimmel".

Just like I've already forgotten about "Russia, Russia, Russia" and "Epstein, Epstein, Epstein"

Yes, let's all pray that the greedy international media monopoly and racist fascist dictator POTUS can just find a way to hug it out.

by Anonymousreply 582September 21, 2025 12:59 AM

Disney can survive without Sinclair, but it can't without the ever growing number of Hollywood creatives who are now publicly supporting the boycott and vowing not to work with Disney until this is resolved.
Sinclair Broadcasting, one of the ABC affiliates who demanded the apology from Kimmel, has backed out of its plan to broadcast a tribute to Charlie Kirk, relegating it to YouTube.

Only after getting pressure from Nick Fuentes, who reminded Sinclair that Charlie wasn't Nazi enough.
I bet in a few weeks, everything will be as it was and everyone will act like this whole thing never happened

This is an absurdly simplistic statement that bears no resemblance to the current situation in the US. Pay attention. This is not normal and it's not stopping any time soon. Everything is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, notning will ever be "as it was" ever again, and no one will ever act like "this whole thing never happened." This is an authoritarian takeover like something out of North Korea.

Walt Disney was a Hitler fan. Not much has changed with that company since he died.

by Anonymousreply 586September 21, 2025 6:07 AM

But if we don’t think about it we can pretend. I can’t think about it a lot. I have too much to lose and it makes me crazy. I can only think about it in bits and pieces until I’m able to control my living in fear. It’s a terrible way to spend my golden years.

by Anonymousreply 587September 21, 2025 6:35 AM

A point I haven't seen anybody else bring up. The Magas don't watch Kimmel, aren't interested in his monologue. The only way they'd see it and find it objectionable is thru the eyes of Newsmax and Fox. Anchors on those networks show edited clips with their own "spin" commentary. They claim it's offensive, call Kimmel a liar, and encourage their viewers to complain to ABC.

That's how it starts!

by Anonymousreply 588September 21, 2025 7:08 AM

[bold] The "Funeral" is going to be insane. [/bold] Wait for it.

Your belief that MAGAs don’t have access to the internet, including X, Facebook, YouTube and others, is bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 590September 21, 2025 8:22 AM

At least the media coverage of the "The Funeral" isn't going to be as large as they wanted it to be.

It's a small win, but we'll take whatever win we can get these days.

by Anonymousreply 591September 21, 2025 11:07 AM

r591, that you see the amount of media coverage of the funeral, of all things, as a win or loss, is really weird.
that you see the amount of media coverage of the funeral, of all things, as a win or loss, is really weird.

No, it doesn't and the fact you think so is evidence of how weird you are.

by Anonymousreply 597September 21, 2025 1:52 PM

Complaining to executives at Nexstar or Sinclair only males sense for people who live in their districts. Even then it may not marter, these people are fanatics AND greedy for cash.

by Anonymousreply 598September 21, 2025 1:57 PM

R592 is particularly ridiculous trotting out that line of b.s. when her Dear Leader can never shut up about TV ratings and crowd sizes. "Really weird" indeed.

by Anonymousreply 599September 21, 2025 2:05 PM

Going local works. When they went after Kimmel they claimed their customers objected, and they talked about "values" etc. So IMO complaining to your affiliates is very effective. And don't stop complaining.
