Is Pedro even trying to keep his gaydom a secret at this point? He shows up with an obvious stud (who isn't a celeb or family member), and then spends half the show in a white tux with his leg jauntily swung over the other. I know he didn't have a real shot of winning Best Actor, but I gotta wonder who he would've thanked this time.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 15, 2025 3:11 AM |
Unfortunately after a great season 1, Severance fell apart in season 2. It should have been a full length movie not a series. True of many things these days.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 15, 2025 3:11 AM |
Meloni needs to let himself age gracefully; he's trying too hard.
No Raúl Esparza? Mr. Barba is my favorite L&O character.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 15, 2025 3:12 AM |
R72 that’s YOUR opinion. Many of us disagree
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 15, 2025 3:18 AM |
I thought season 2 of “Severence” was ambitious and interesting, but less emotionally involving and accessible than season 1. It’s in danger of being too cerebral and too far up its own ass. But I was thrilled Tillman and Lower won.
I like Kathy Bates but that “Matlock” reboot sucks, it’s the worst kind of formula network blather. And Bates didn’t elevate it, rather she sank to its level. Maybe it’s all the weight she lost, she seems smaller than life these days.
Britt Lower should have won for season 1 of “Severence” but wasn’t even nominated. Adam Scott did great work, but Noah snuck in with an beautifully sustained intense performance for nearly twice the numbers of eps “Severance” had, and Wyle dominated every episode with great heart.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 15, 2025 3:31 AM |
Severance definitely fell apart in season 2. It shouldn’t be getting this attention. And The Studio REALLY shouldn’t be getting this attention. Not funny, unwatchable. I don’t care how many comedy A listers they throw in it, the writing is garbage and the actors are totally at sea with multiple disparate styles clashing. It’s a real piece of shit, and I like quite a few of the actors. Unfortunate that Hollywood is acting like they love it.
There was never a question that Adolescence was going to win everything it was nominated for. That and The Pitt were the two shows of the year. Period.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 15, 2025 3:32 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 15, 2025 3:46 AM |
My feeling about Sweeney is that she’s abnormally ambitious, even by Hollywood standards. She’ll want to keep everyone guessing. And won’t want to alienate folks by leaning too far to one side or the other. She wants to remain sphinx-like. Whether her strategy or her teams that is a smart (but spineless) way to go these days.
Of course she might just be dumb. Or not know much about politics.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 15, 2025 3:47 AM |
She’s is an “actress”, R82
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 15, 2025 3:48 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 15, 2025 3:52 AM |
I don't care who actors vote for, nor do I care what their politics are. However, I understand with how polarized things are these days; everyone wants everyone else to choose a side. I think it's best for all entertainers to just straddle the fence. Don't piss off anyone.

It’s a shame that the best recent TV comedy, What We Do in the Shadows, never won Emmys. Very gay positive show with ACTUAL laughs.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | September 15, 2025 4:22 AM |
He also said this to Hollywood Reporter
“But when [Goran Visnjic] came on to the show, I had a chip on my shoulder. I had a chip on my shoulder with anybody that came on that show. I’ve systematically gone to and apologized to everybody over the years about being the person that I was — which was, “You better come to play, you better bring your A game. This is pro ball, blah, blah, blah.” And it was not an easy environment to work in because we didn’t suffer fools. We were really hard on people, and I was hard on people that were coming into the show, like Erik Palladino or Michael Michele. Everybody had to earn their keep, in my opinion, especially poor Kellie Martin. I owe her a big apology. Goran, I [gave him grief] when he first came on. And then I realized that he was a way better actor than I was. He performed Hamlet in Dubrovnik in front of thousands of European screaming fans. He was the real deal. I hated him because I always felt like I was losing a scene to him. Alright. Let’s talk about something else.”

One of my favorite things of ER lore was the big zoom reunion panel they did. Noah said something about Anthony and George bringing everyone together to say there wouldn't be egos here because the show is special, etc. Present-day George was like, yeah, that was actually an intervention for you! And the whole cast including Noah burst out laughing. Great moment.
Noah was the big diva on set with an ego back then.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 15, 2025 4:35 AM |
Noah was notoriously mean to Kellie Martin back during ER. I still to this day believe part of why she quit was because of him. It didn’t help she had to work very closely with him specifically because her character was training under Carter.

You can see why network TV ratings continue to decline. All the best and most buzz worthy shows are on the streamers.

I’ve never quite heard a star admit to their nastiness and envy and how they have grown and regret their moral weakness the way Noah Wyle did.
Besides that, The Pitt was the show of the year. I’m thrilled that Wyle, Katherine LaNasa (married to hot Grant Show! Bitch!) and Shawn Hatosy won. Fiona Dourif and Dr Tweaker Travolta were unlucky not to be nominated.
The acting was the best thing about Adolescence. The real time gimmick helped cover up the Very Special Episode writing.

r118, Malin Akerman, who was best known for the Silk Spectre in Watchmen (she was brunette and it looked amazing on her), and recently on Billions, Brittany Snow, whom you may know from Hairspray (Michelle Pfeiffer's daughter) and Pitch Perfects They're both on The Hunting Wives (I've never heard of it), so PR threw them in for it.

That’s some cool lineage. I loved seeing cameo Brad turn up as McKay’s dad. Even if you didn’t know the part was played by a legendary Oscar-nominated character actor, you knew he was “someone” because he had so much presence in such a short period of time.
After what many felt was a suspiciously timed announcement by CBS that Late Night with Stephen Colbert would end after this year, it was unsurprising that the room shook with cheers as the crowd took to their feet to celebrate the show's win for outstanding variety series. After sharing a heartfelt and jubilant speech, he ended on a thoughtful note about the show, which he said he'd hoped would be a show about love
"At a certain point ... I realized that in some ways, we were doing a late-night comedy show about loss. And that's related to love, because you only truly know how much you love something when you get a sense that you might be losing it," he said. "Ten years later, in September of 2025, my friends, I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America. Stay strong, be brave, and if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy and punch a higher floor."

Who cares what an asshole Noah Wyle was 25 years ago? He has evidently changed enough to apologize to his old co-stars (though in Kellie Martin’s case on ER, he was absolutely right. She was a talentless blob with the presence and affect of a 12 year old and she was a terrible actress, borne out by the fact that we’re blessedly not burdened today with her middle aged presence on our TV screens).
Since I don’t have to work with Noah Wyle, and am not his neighbor or friend, I’m only interested in what he does onscreen. As good as Adam Scott was in dilineating his diverging ‘innie’ and ‘outie’ personalities, his performance killed primarily in the episode in which he rapidly switched personalities several times, and did a great job of distinguishing between them. I don’t know which episode of “The Pitt” was put in consideration for Wyle’s performance, but anyone who watched the series (i.e. everyone who voted) saw him give a detailed, harrowing performance which stayed consistent through 15 episodes. It was a really bravura acting turn which took the audience on an emotional journey.
That emotional accessibility is what made “The Pitt” so successful with audiences. “Severence” is smart and beautifully done (and gets good ratings) but more a mind game than a heart game. It’s the epitome of prestige streaming and Apple spends a fortune on it. “The Pitt” is much cheaper even at twice the number of episodes, it’s basically an adaptation of the network model, retro-fitted for streaming, and very much in the comfort zone of many in the TV business.
Network TV didn’t win anything tonight, except for Colbert, which was canceled, and the SNL special. You can see why network TV ratings continue to decline.
I'll be sure to file this under "No Shit, Sherlock," cupcake, since you apparently didn't get the memo that broadcast TV is in its final death throes. Now that most people have transitioned to streaming, the average viewer age across ALL FOUR broadcast networks is over 65! CBS used to be "the geezer network" with an average viewer age of 60, but this is basically how the CW survived for so long despite ridiculously low ratings: they may have sucked, but they were successfully pulling in a *young* demographic, and that's all that ad buyers generally want. (Which I say as a former media planner on Madison Avenue: CBS has been the highest-rated network overall for most of the past 30 years, but that's mainly because its shows draw in geezers, and geezers still watch the most TV. An ad on a show like, for instance, "The O.C." could've very well sold for 2x as much as any given top-20 CBS show at the time.)
There isn't any sort of timetable yet, but terrestrial TV may end up like AOL: hanging on by a thread for 20 years too long, and solely because people are too afraid of change their ways & switch to streaming. We still have a legitimate *need* for TV, however – it's still the most heavily used source of news, and aside from Fox & Newsmax is generally accurate – but what we don't *really* need is entertainment programming, or at least not network TV & its strict constraints: almost exactly 42 minutes of airtime, 22 episodes per season, sticking to the same formula each week, and America's more-absurd-than-ever pearl-clutching over cussing. (While basic cable started embracing "fuck" a decade ago, network TV still operates under FAA mandate, and still does stupid shit like fining a network $1 million because Bono said "fuck" on a live broadcast while accepting either a Grammy or Oscar.)
The ONLY network shows that generate an actual profit nowadays are Today & GMA, and they've only managed it by stealthily forcing out high-priced talent. (Speaking of: this was the *real* reason Kelly Ripa replaced Ryan Seacrest with her own husband on "Live." Her show's ratings are down as well, and they couldn't afford *two* hosts making $20 mil a year.) The late-night shows were profitable until fairly recently, but since the youngest viewers were the first to cut the TV cord entirely, they're going down the shitter as well. I know the Colbert news was a shock, but only if you missed that James Corden's replacement had already been fired – AND they announced the show would be ending entirely. Kimmel said last year that he expected his own show to end within 18 months.
But yeah: if "Abbott Elementary" and "Matlock" are the only network shows that can even get *nominated* nowadays, that's a clear sign of a continued (but predictable) downward spiral.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 15, 2025 3:46 PM |
R133 it was a toss between either. Everyone knew it would come down to one of them but Noah had the edge, especially with the overdue narrative as he was nominated 5 times for ER in the supporting category but never won.
My feeling about Sweeney is that she’s abnormally ambitious, even by Hollywood standards. She’ll want to keep everyone guessing. Of course she might just be dumb.
She's exceptionally ambitious, and definitely NOT "dumb." While I'm reassessing my feelings in light of the reveal of her being a registered Republican, I *was* a definite fan of hers. She knows full well she could readily be dismissed as a "blonde bimbo," and has made a point of taking unconventional roles along with mainstream fare. She starred in "Reality," about the decidedly non-glam Reality Winner, the (oddly named) Air Force translator who leaked the NSA report about Russian interference in the 2016 election, and has "Christy" (about a female boxer) up next.
As for her intellect, she was her high school valedictorian – and graduated a year early – and taught *herself* Russian (over a decade ago, and not related to any current ongoing events), in addition to teaching herself how to rebuild a vintage '73 Bronco. I certainly hope there's some explanation for why she'd both buy a house in Florida *and* register to vote as a Republican there, but it's a very safe bet her family is conservative. She grew up mainly in Spokane (the one conservative part of WA) as well as Idaho (heavily conservative, including some Mormon overflow).
But yes, everything she's doing is by design. Okay, almost: I'm curious if she knew – and this admittedly isn't something people in general realize, either – that 1) your voter registration is a matter of public record, including your selected party affiliation; and/or 2) if that was the case in the places she grew up. (Which I say having grown up in Texas: you merely register to vote, not align with either party, and anyone can vote in the Democratic or Republican primary – but you can only vote in *one* of the two primaries. My mom, a diehard liberal, still votes Republican in most primaries solely to try to force out Ted Cruz & John Cornyn.)
by Anonymous | reply 145 | September 15, 2025 4:03 PM |
I trust, then, R145, your mom will vote for Ken Paxton in next year’s primary.
I'm thrilled that the truly puerile White Lotus got nothing. And, the ridiculous streak of The Bear has been broken.
Agreed. S3 of "The Bear" sucked, and we all know it. While its latest season is another story, it fully deserved this year's shutout. (I'd even argue it didn't deserve a few of the nominations this time as well.)
Ditto for "The White Lotus," and I remain baffled by how both the cast *and* its entire writing & directing staff – in other words, Mike White – were unaware just how far off the rails S3 went. While I appreciate Mike pushing boundaries in terms of gay male anything, incest is a kink to a few but an ICK to almost everyone else. It also wasn't helpful how Patrick Schwarzenegger & Sam Nivola went on the talk show circuit solely to insist that nothing really "happened," and they're both just two totes norm straight brahs banging their hot-ass bitches, tired of fielding questions about "all that gay shit."
Also, people seem to have forgotten that it was almost shut out last year as well: Jennifer Coolidge was the only winner. I would've been okay with Sam Rockwell winning for THAT monologue alone, but obviously Tramell Tillman did a fuckload more to earn it.
I *really* hope the early rumors about next season being set in the South of France are wrong. It's too similar to Italy, and very much been-there-done-that. Mike almost seems to have a Survivor-like mentality of thinking tropical places are the lone "choice," never mind that this isn't at all the case for hotels/hospitality in general. Even Aman Resorts, the ridiculously posh real-life ones that were the primary model the show borrowed – its first resort was in Phuket, though the show didn't film there – have resorts in places like the French & Swiss Alps (e.g. Courchevel), but also an increasing number of urban locations. (But to be fair, we did see The White Lotus Bangkok this season, albeit briefly.)

by Anonymous | reply 148 | September 15, 2025 4:40 PM |
R146, not necessarily. It depends entirely on which Republican candidate is predicted to win the primary, along with their rough odds of winning the general. And right now I don't think there's any clear evidence yet that Paxton has accrued enough influence to defeat John Cornyn, an admittedly milquetoast but nonetheless four-term senior senator. We know Paxton is Trump's favorite, but what we don't know is when Trump will begin sliding in popularity even among the MAGA core.
Also, Colin Allred may have lost against Ted Cruz during a presidential election year, but going up against Cornyn in the midterms is another story entirely – especially if the GOP hit rocky shoals, as expected. Allred's announced his run, but for the first time in 30+ years, Texas may actually have a competitive *Democratic* primary for the Senate! James Talarico, a state legislator, just announced his run last week. He's definitely an interesting contender, in part because the first question he typically gets is, "How the fuck are you *not* Republican?" (He's a native Texan, white, and the son of a preacher. Except he's a Christian in the *right* mold, meaning the Jimmy Carter one: loving thy neighbor, not "God loves those who help themselves.")
OTOH Allred's mixed-race & definitely more likely to appeal to Black voters in particular, plus he's the more polished of the two. I think either would be great, as does my mom – meaning yes, she'll most likely vote in the Republican primary despite having the Dems have a realistic chance of winning, especially if Trump's administration devolves into full-tilt FUBAR levels.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 15, 2025 4:54 PM |
Lmao who cares who she votes for? Welcome to America. Wake up. You have the freedom to vote for who you want, as do I and anyone else.
Spokane is not the only “conservative part of Washington”. That is a lie.
And she comes from a very intelligent family and is intelligent and ambitious. Trying to criticize someone for being ambitious is insane behavior and just shows you lack ambition and are probably lazy and useless to those around you.

From the perspective of an outsider, albeit a rather well-informed one, I think Cornyn will coast to yet another reelection if he's renominated. While Paxton might still be the favorite in the general if he gets the nod, he won't be a prohibitive favorite, increasing the odds that a Democrat - Talarico! - can flip that seat.

R143's assessment is pretty solid.
At some point in the next few years (5 to 10 at the most) all 4 of the major networks will either move entirely to streaming OR the remaining "free" over the air content will become more of a QVC/cable news mashup, with some local news and programming still featured, maybe.
The days of network TV programing 3 hours a night (4 on Sundays) will be gone. NBC was already considering abandoning the 10 pm hour a year or two ago. If those hours continue, the "free" networks will be repeating what the streaming networks have already shown first. Much as the TV networks used to be the place to see theatrical movies many years ago, the free networks will probably be featuring older reruns of things, plus perhaps a lot more foreign content, as they did during COVID when Canadian content was imported.
I wish it wasn't happening but it seems relatively inevitable, the speed just depends on a few things. A bunch of shows and companies were impacted in 2008 due to that writers' strike and the economic downturn, and again in 2023 when THAT strike happened, so those kind of things can accelerate the rate of change.

For some reason, Netflix didn't premiere [bold]Dept. Q[/bold] until two days before the end of the Emmys eligibility period. Had they waited a week, the show would have been eligible for next year's awards. I suspect they didn't think it would do as well as it did—a Top 10 show for 6 weeks—and were already fully invested in the Emmy chances of [bold]Adolescence[/bold] by then.
Off topic but serious question....am I the only gay who has never seen any of these shows and doesn't know who most of these people are?
You're definitely not alone. TV's changed: it's really that simple. Instead of paying a monthly HBO subscription or for cable TV, you have to subscribe (usually separately) to various bundles of streaming channels, and it's a definite lifestyle adjustment. The shows themselves are as well: the network TV model is nearly dead, and streaming shows can have anywhere from six to 15 episodes in a given season. You also need to figure out how to find out about various shows, considering only a tiny fraction of the most high-profile shows are widely reviewed by critics.
The one MASSIVE change is being able to watch anything you want at any time. You've never seen "Severance" or "The Studio"? Just sign up for Apple TV+ and binge-view each. Same for "Hacks" or "Adolescence."
Honestly, even my nearly 80-year-old mother has transitioned to streaming shows handily, so I'd be very surprised if you had problems with it, at least after you get the hang of it.

Not unless they release another season before next summer, R172.
The eligibility period for last night's awards ended on May 31, 2025. The eligibility period for next year, therefore, began on June 1. (The ending date hasn't been announced yet, but will most likely mirror this year.)
Netflix released all 9 episodes of Dept. Q on May 29th, two days before the 2025 eligibility period ended. Therefore, it was eligible for this year's awards. It did, in fact, receive a single nomination--for Outstanding Original Main Theme Music, which it lost to The White Lotus.

Sunday’s telecast on CBS (also live streamed on Paramount+ averaged 7.42 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen figures. That’s up 8 percent from the 2024 ceremony on ABC, which brought in 6.9 million viewers and stopped a streak of two straight all-time ratings lows for the Emmys.
