I’m in a helpful mood.

In olden days the Editor would select random snippets of posts and put them on display in a feature called “Wit and Wisdom of Datalounge.” As the Editor succumbed to age and her demons, this became too much work and she automated the process, trusting, unwisely, to the discernment of Datalounge’s users. While some do use it to highlight posts they find particularly wise or witty, most treat it as a generic “like” or “upvote” button. This is relatively harmless.

Not so harmless: The “Flames and Freaks” alarm was originally (I believe) intended to call the editor’s attention to truly unsocial posts that should be reviewed in context to determine whether the poster should be given a temporary timeout or be banned as a troll. Now, the banning process will too has been automated and left to the not so tender mercies of Datalounge’s users who include, sadly, more than our fair share of psychopaths and other deranged individuals. They use F&F to punish people whose opinions they don’t like or who call them out for their own bad behavior and stupidity. Some are believed to game the system by creating multiple accounts and take the time to use the accounts to F&F the posts of their perceived enemies whom they stalk through misuse of other DL features.

As a result, many users will find their accounts automatically suspended, particularly if they weigh in on a hot topic.

Others innocently misuse F&F as “dislike” or “downvote” and this adds to the automated banning problem.

Don’t hold your breath on any reforms, but don’t give up hope either. The Editor is full of surprises.

F&F also assists in preserving the sensitive spirits who do not want to see the posts that tend to represent the DL's best and worse. See "Settings."

As for “access,” it would be marvelous if you could store up W&W points and trade them in for coupons and gift cards, but I’m afraid they have no value beyond ego boosting. You will be notified in a system that has been under construction and in beta (“nothing to see here”) since the Bush administration. Look for the little bell in the upper right corner. Also, your cumulative totals are kept in your user profile (click on “Account”) but no one can see them but you. Some people will from time to time post their totals in a misbegotten attempt at boasting, but I suspect these are the same people who W&W themselves.

Speaking of being banned- how long does that typically last? Seems prettty annoying too, if you’re not deliberately trolling, just stating things some people disagree with and you get banned. I know it’s only like $2 a month but that’s still lame to not be able to actually use something you paid for

I set up this new account to report that one of our deranged members (perhaps R19) has, in fact, banned me.

Many times under my 'notifications' it will say something like, '3 people liked your post in ...'. however, it doesn't show that on my end. I usually have to refresh the page then I'll see the '3' near the WWs. Is this common for everyone ? Do I need to change something in my settings ?
