Paramount Condemns Israeli Film Boycott After Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix and 3,900 Industry Names Sign Pledge
The pledge, published on Monday by the organization Film Workers for Palestine, saw more than 3,900 industry figures — including Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy and Palme d’Or winners — declare that they will refuse to work with Israeli institutions and companies that are “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.” The pledge statement states that examples of complicity include “whitewashing or justifying genocide and apartheid, and/or partnering with the government committing them.”
As an American Jew, I am not supporting this either. This Israeli government along with its assortment of crazy people are nothing like us here. Wish they would stop trying to pander to us like we're all in this shit together. Bitch, no we are NOT.
I'm not ashamed to be Jew. I'm just not seeking to get rid of the people who are FROM THERE just for a bunch of Germans. Paramount is going to find itself ass out of talent. Want to see the studio COLLAPSE?

Has Emma Stone signed a petition to prevent people in the United States from going bankrupt due to healthcare costs? Or a petition to prevent people in the United States, the most prosperous country on earth, from going hungry or homeless?
Or are those causes not media “sexy” enough for her and her unquenchable thirst for attention and publicity?
Are serious issues in your own country not worthy of your worthless signature, Emma?

[quote]refrain from signing worthless petitions to prove she’s smart because she has an inferiority complex due to her lack of education.
Emma Stone may have a lack of FORMAL education, but her 20+-year acting career, which includes learning about filmmaking, travelling to film festivals all over the world and dealing with the international media to promote her movies (not to mention being Yorgos Lanthimos's "protégée" for some years), has been its own education, just of a different kind. She's perfectly capable of holding her own in interviews. She has nothing to apologize for when compared to actors who *have* been to college.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 13, 2025 3:11 PM

R48, I think it’s generous to call Emma Stone’s career an “education.” Film isn’t an actor’s medium—it’s the director’s and editor's. Actors, even the best ones, are ultimately working within someone else’s vision and are fairly passive in the larger creative process.
And let’s be honest: attending film festivals or sitting through press junkets where you’re asked what it’s like to be a “strong woman” or whether you prefer yourself blonde or with red hair is not exactly the stuff of intellectual rigor. It’s entirely possible to work in Hollywood for 20 years and still be as thick as two short planks—see her BFF Jennifer Lawrence, who with a straight face once called herself the world’s first female action star. Experience in the industry doesn’t automatically equal depth or insight.

Well-educated people don't describe others as "uneducated." They use the phrase "not formally educated."
What is short-sighted is to dismiss the value of exceptional life experience and exposure to world-class talent, even in someone of average intelligence, and to insist that that formal education is the only valid gateway to personal, cultural, and intellectual enrichment. Emma Stone doubtless has more interesting stories to tell than the average American college graduate.

[quote]To everyone who says Israel is doing the wrong thing, what would YOU do if you were Israel?
I think a Labor government in Israel would have handled the whole thing a lot more effectively and humanely. Israel's problem is that it's run by a right-wing government that, like our own right-wing government, runs on macho militarism (and also isn't very popular among Israelis). And Netanyahu refuses to call elections because he knows he'll lose.
I support the right of these actors to boycott Israel, but I wish they'd also boycott some other countries that are behaving equally badly. Are they aware of how China is treating the Uyghurs? No. But it's just as bad as Israel in Gaza.

R52 Many actors become successful directors because they learn about storytelling as an actor, how to successfully work with other actors, and by watching the director and crew. Acting is a wonderful way to learn not only about the stage or film business, but about potentionally any subject the world, as well as the human condition. It can be a wonderful education to those given the opportunity and who are open to it.
R64 American taxpayer dollars and weapons support Israel. That makes America complicit in the actions of the Israeli government. Americans a vested interest in expressing their opinions about a genocide partly funded by the US.
I dob't understand all the whataboutism on here. It's understood that an individual has the right to pursue their own interests and inclinations, whatever they feel passionate about.
