The bottom line is these people do not view liberals and Democrats as political opponents. They regard us as dangerous enemies against whom violence is excused, justified, even celebrated . This is what guides them.

We can recognize their attitudes as un-American and undesirable, but as long as they hold power, we have to recognize that the game is being played by their rules, not ours.

We can return to civility when this scourge passes.

R29, "these people", "they" is very general. I think it's necessary to be more specific about the group you describe. When you ask for civility, you must include both sides. As you can see civility is not a thing that works with just half the population. So you may want to carve out some people on the right who are willing to sit at the table with you after this presidency is over. I would distinguish those on the right in your family or neighborhood who are overwhelmed and don't understand the full damage the current administration causes. Or the Republicans who don't even voice concerns anymore for fear that they lose their Senate seat to someone more radical.
