At the time it was read as both a metaphor for Communism and for anti-communist hysteria. Much like "1984." But a really good story doesn't neatly fit into any one explanation.

I have made this comparison many times and especially the scene where he realizes she is one of them. The horror on his face is the same look I have when I find out people I love believe all that Trump stands for.
