The only 9/11 victim I knew personally was a complete cunt, so instead I'll be remembering all the Arabic and Muslim people in the US who after 9/11 got kidnapped and detained in horrific conditions without due process, as also happened to Latinos at the US-Mexico bordef during the first Trump admin, and, since nobody gave a fuck, has now become a nationwide ethnic cleansing operation.

R12, So just because you hated one person who was killed on 9/11, you're disrespecting all of them? That is some logic.

Stories of what happened to people that day, and to all those who were directly affected by the attacks, still reduce me to tears when I engage with them. Every time I learn about some new horrifying detail of what it was like in those planes or those towers, I feel sick.

But for a lot of people of my generation (I'm 36), it's hard to disentangle how "Never Forget" was used as a political cudgel to justify the right wing domestic politics and foreign wars of the Bush Era. A lot of us responded with irony, jokes, memes, etc.

It's the banal sentimentalization of their experiences that I found personally distasteful and politically dangerous. The need to cast the dead and forever traumatized survivors as "heroes." When a government compels you to grieve or worship in the proscribed fashion to demonstrate your loyalty to their political project, I fucking dissent.

But then, every time I've heard those panicked phone calls or seen those photos and videos of Howard Lutnick's employees waiting to fall to their deaths, I'm filled with rage about what happened to them and feel a devastating sense of empathy.

Those are a lot of contradictory feelings. And "Never Forget" is too feeble a slogan to contain them.

I hope those of you who were more directly affected by 9/11 do what you need to do to get through today.

I agree r21 — many millennials and younger openly ridicule 9/11.

Part of the reason they do it is because it’s naughty to be disrespectful, and they are Peter Pan generations.

But mostly I think they do it because of the inch-thick layer of schmaltz that’s spread all over the attack by middle America — people who hate nyc have completely co-opted the city’s tragedy.

And as r21 mentions. 9/11 was colonized by the bush admin for their own dark purposes.
