Someone asked what's the 'most Gen X thing' ever and the responses were awesome

Gen Xers were also born in an in-between era after women entered the workforce and before the advent of helicopter parenting. They fell through the cracks and were often left on their own. That’s a big reason why they have a reputation for being resourceful and independent. They are also known to be a bit cynical and sarcastic, a trait that comes from the economic and social tumult they experienced as children.

I'm so Gen-X, I don't give enough of a shit to click that link.

Me neither, somebody else do it.

(born 1967)

Upworthy still exists?

by Anonymousreply 3September 10, 2025 3:15 PM

Whatever

by Anonymousreply 4September 10, 2025 3:26 PM

Invisibility.

Between the Boomers and the Millennials, nobody ever gave a shit about Gen X.

R5, we did get a few years in the early nineties where Boomers called us slackers, plus a run of classic teen movies from John Hughes to Clueless. But we never developed that strong of a generational identity in the same way that Boomers did, because we were a small generation raised at the end of the monoculture.

I'm fine with that. It's spared us a lot of the nostalgic treacle the Boomers indulged in for so long. No one talks about Nirvana and Weezer the way that Boomers still go on about The Beatles, and thank goodness for that. (But, still, I'd love it if we shut up about drinking from water hoses and playing in the suburbs without parental supervision. You were at the playground down the street, Jennifer, not war-torn Chechnya!)

R1, same here, I’ve heard it all before

I'm younger Gen X (born '76) and Adam Walsh changed everything. We weren't allowed to go off riding around town on our bikes or anything like that. Helicopter parenting began with Boomers, who were the parents of the younger Xers.

Interesting, R8, because Negligence Parenting was the neighborhood trend when I was a kid, age 6 in ‘73 to age 12 in ‘79.

by Anonymousreply 9September 10, 2025 6:40 PM

Yup. Negligence was the name of the game
