Anyone know what's happening in Poland? Why all the panic? A Russian suicide drone invaded Polish airspace and fighter jets scrambled. The rumor mill is working overtime.

R11 Germany invaded Poland first on Sep 1, 1939, then Russia invaded 16 days later. The Polish military fought bravely, but they were no match for a war on two fronts. Britain declared war on Sep 3 but dropped anti-Nazi pamphlets on Germany instead of using its military to defend Poland..
Hitler considered the Slavic people (which includes tge Poles) to be subhuman. He wanted the land of Poland for Germans to own and occupy and to use the Polish people as slave labor. Any possible threats were destroyed, including many people in leadership positions within the nation.
Poland lost 20% of its population in WWII. Both Polish Jews and Polish Christians were sent to Nazi concentration camps. After the war, Poland lost its independence to the Soviet Union for decades.
After all the help the Poles gave to the Allies in WWII, Britain refused, under pressure from Stalin, to allow Polish military personnel march in the London victory parade in 1946.
NATO members know from experience it is imperative to defend Poland immediately if it is attacked because their countries are next in line.
From the article linked below:
[Quote] From the beginning, this was to be a different kind of war—a war not only of conquest but also of annihilation. On August 22, just before the invasion, Hitler delivered a speech to his military commanders at Obersalzberg. In the speech, he said that the object of the war was to physically destroy the enemy. Men, women, and children of Polish descent or language were to be killed without pity. The campaign was to be carried out “with the greatest brutality and without mercy.”[4] To that end, the Einsatzgruppen—SS death squads—and police battalions were formed to exterminate Poles who might oppose German rule. Lists were drawn up of prominent men and women who were to be tracked down and killed as soon as possible. Cities like Warsaw were eventually to be “cleansed” of their Jewish populations and the ethnic Polish population reduced to a small group of slave laborers. Hitler devised a monstrous plan of colonization based on extreme violence and murder; tragically, those plans would evolve into unimaginable crimes that would culminate in the creation of a new kind of industrial-scale killing: the extermination camp.

Some defense stocks rose 50% this morning, in response to this event, according to Barron's. To read the article, you need a subscriotion or start an account for limited viewing of articles on the site.
Looks like some people are taking this seriously.
[Quote] Russia escalated geopolitical tensions, flying military drones into Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. That “act of aggression” had shares of defense contractors moving, again.
Capitalism can always be counted on to profit off of war (and often cause them).

R22 Because if one bad guy at the top gets knocked off, then no head of state will feel safe. And if we know anything about (most) world leaders, they'd rather millions die in wars than have their own precious selves put at risk.

What makes this moment so perilous is Trump will side with Putin, regardless of what he may say, and European leaders know this.
America's superpower military was an effective deterrent to Russia's aggression until the traitor took office.
Putin sees how toothless and spineless any opposition to Trump is within the US and knows the Republican party is now Russia friendly, in stark contrast to its position previously, before MAGA replaced any and all serious, competent Republican statesmen in Congress.
It will be up to Europe to stop Putin.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 10, 2025 1:50 PM |
Russia might as well start now, because 3-5 years out it's going to be a very different Europe. France and Germany are massively increasing their domestic defense spending, and Macron is pushing the EU to become a major global military force. They need to kick out Hungary.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean NATO is at war with Russia. It means Poland has called on other NATO members to consult about a common defense.
What I think will happen is, other NATO members will send fighters and air defenses to Poland. If it happens repeatedly, showing it was deliberate, that will change, though.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 10, 2025 2:35 PM |
[quote]Biden caused this
In some ways, he did. The Biden admin continually refused to give Ukraine the weapons it needed to truly win the war (e.g ATACMS long range missiles), out of fear of "escalation", which only signalled to Putin to keep going. Remember how long it took for the U.S. to finally relent and allow the transfer of F16s from NATO countries to Ukraine? Or the M1 Abrams tanks?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 10, 2025 2:42 PM |
R26, I wonder if this was the point of Putin’s meeting with Trump: he wanted to see for himself just how out of it Trump was before he expanded into Poland.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 10, 2025 3:17 PM |
The Poles have been okay with Putin attacking Ukraine without a stitch of awareness that it could happen to them (AGAIN, I might add — Poland was invaded by Russia in the 80s), just as all the MAGA morons are crying because they don’t think Trump would do it to THEM!
As such, I have very little respect for the Poles, here. Poland is a country of whack job conservative politics. Politically, they’re not a nice or wise people.

^ very homophobic and racist, too.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 10, 2025 3:37 PM |
R36 I respectfully disagree. Poland has helped Ukraine tremendously during this latest war, including spending €40bn (1.9% of its GDP) between 2022 and 2024 for defense and humanitarian aid for Ukraine. Yes, they could do more, but the statement that "The Poles have been okay with Putin attacking Ukraine" is completely false.
Published Sep 8, 2025
[Quote] Russia’s war against Ukraine as the first stage of a Moscow-led imperialist project which threatens Polish sovereignty. Effectively, this means Poland is equating its own struggle against Russian expansionism with Ukraine’s resistance against Vladimir Putin: Polish prime minster Donald Tusk remarked in March 2025 that “Poland’s national interest requires unequivocal, lasting support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression” is “non-negotiable”.
[Quote] As such, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has provided extensive military and political support while mobilising assistance among its allies. Poland is the main logistics hub in Europe for defence and humanitarian aid, with 80% of military donations transiting through the country; between 2022 and 2024, the country spent €40bn (1.9% of its GDP) on defence and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, including refugee costs. It has also delivered 47 military aid packages to date—a feat which continues, despite the risk of Russian strikes on Polish territory. Poland is also engaged against Russia diplomatically: in July 2024, Tusk signed a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky to provide military assistance, defence industry cooperation and support for Ukraine’s NATO and EU membership bids. Poland also participates in, for example, the Ukraine Defence Contact Group and has imposed its own sanctions against Russia while actively supporting European efforts to weaken Russia’s economy. Poland is also a member of the “Coalition of the Willing”, co-chaired by Britain and France, whose members last week pledged strong defence support for Ukraine.

Europe is experiencing a worrying leadership crisis. UK PM Starmer is headed straight down the shitter, Macron is giving deep in debt France her fifth prime minister in 21 months and in Germany Merz is polling behind the far right AfD. The EU has proved toothless and the natives are increasingly restless about the non-natives among them. And now the war in Ukraine has breached the border.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 10, 2025 5:22 PM |
R36 is complete nonsense. No country has helped Ukraine more as a percentage of its GDP than Poland.
The Russians are the big baddie to Poles, even more than the Germans.
And Poland will soon have the most powerful army in Europe, as a response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 10, 2025 6:08 PM |
[R46] Do you think the majority of Americans don't want to do anything to stop the madness?
Normal non-MAGA citizens are waiting for someone(s) with military experience and/or political knowledge to lead the way. Without a sound plan, any serious actions to stop the regime would likely end up with a lot of people arrested, injured, or killed, without effecting any real change. It could result in martial law declared, making a bad situation worse, and political prisoners being sent to prisons or detention without due process.
Congress and the Supreme Court have sabotaged our political system. We've been betrayed. More than half the country can see this and want to stop it but by going up against the military, police, and surveillance systems established, we'd be like fish in a barrel.
Also factor in how politically divided the US population is now. We are unable to unite against a common enemy, and any rebellion would have to worry about the regime's supporters spying and informing authorities about suspicious activity.
How many nations have been able to successfully able to overthrow a dictatorship from within? And how long did it take them to do it?
.It's easier to fight against another nation that to fight an enemy in power within your own nation because you have no control of the resources needed to successfully win.
If you have ideas on how a divided population can successfully overthrow a major superpower from within its borders, please share. We're eager to learn.

I'm in Ireland, but as a regular news consumer here I can confirm that what R42/R51 wrote is pretty much accurate. There's certainly a leadership crisis across Europe, and confidence in politicians is at an all-time low (what else is new?). Though the reports of an imminent "civil war" may be stoked by right-wing media in the UK, the country is in a pretty grim state. And look at the "Block Everything" demonstrations happening all across France today. The problems are the same all over Europe: cost-of-living crisis, unaffordable housing, crumbling of public services, declining education standards.
