It’s our only hope.
The only real option is to win back control of the House or Senate next year.

OP you probably already know this, but I'll share it for anybody else: Charlie Cook maintains a good online resource for how that's going. Here's the House...
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 9, 2025 5:12 PM |
... and here's Charlie Cook's forecast for the Senate (2026)....
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 9, 2025 5:13 PM |
Current outlook: chance of a Nov 2026 House flip to Democratic majority is mixed, and likely to improve if the economy worsens (and the reverse is true if the economy does well in the next 12-14 months). Chance of a Nov 2026 Senate flip to Democratic majority is poor. Some miracles would have to happen.

You forgot the redistricting in Texas and Florida which will make this topic red and moot.

R5, now I’m a bit embarrassed that I never got curious as to who (Amy) is actually in charge of the Cook Report. Cool that she’s a lesbian and seems like a good person.

R6. Are you serious? You claim to be the resident polling expert and don’t know of AmyvWslter.
That’s a very sad fail on your part.

These are not normal times where investigations in one chamber or the other will lead to anything. All this talk is treating this like Trump is the same as Bush or Reagan. If the Dems win the House, Trump does not care if the House impeaches him again since the Senate will not vote to convict since that requires 2/3.
The Democrats need to win both the House and the Senate to actually pass anything and get in an actual confrontation with Trump that forces him to veto or not. Anything less changes basically nothing about the current situation.
And I don't think that's going to happen. Certainly not with the Democratic party as it is right now. This is one reason why I support the shutdown. It's a drastic move that might actually get people excited to support Democrats again. They need to see the Democrats fighting against what many believe is a man who is this close to becoming a dictator.

CLOSE!?!?!!!

The Democrats could indeed fuck up a circle jerk and lose this very handily of their own. Add in redistricting, vote counting "irregularities, and a dumb as dirt electorate who voted twice for a monster and will gladly do again... There's no fucking chance of a power switch.

R8, I am far from an expert and don’t watch TV or follow these people on social media.. I just try to get focused on the data itself every election season.

Free advice: watch. You can’t understand this world without checking in. I check on Fox News just to see “what are they saying now?”
I shared a link above from yesterdays PBS discussion—see how smart, and, realistic, Amy is.
Last note: I can’t believe you don’t follow Washington Werk in Review…every Friday evening on PBS. Easily the best —if too brief—analysis of what is going on.

I’ve said this elsewhere; but shutting down the government is a (mostly performative) fallback move, at best.
It will dominate the news, get folks excited and kick Epstein off the front pages; but that’s about it. Trump will use the absence of controls to make things even worse, under the guise of “essential” services.
There are Republicans who know he’s doing wrong. There are Republicans who (belatedly) regret some of the things and people they’ve approved (RFK jr; shutting down rural hospitals, etc.). The Dems need to agree to fund the government -after all, the billionaires are going to want their handouts - on the condition that certain high profile things are reversed/blocked. Feckless Republicans can say they were “forced” to go along in order to provide food/disaster relief/whatever for their constituents.
If Trump vetoes the spending and shuts the government down, then [italic] he [/italic] will take the blame. If the Republicans don’t agree to block things like Gestapo-like seizures, [italic] then [/italic] shutting down the government may have a point.

I subscribe to The Atlantic, which has raided many of the top reporters from WaPo, which now formally hosts Washington Week in Review. So yes, I’m a faithful viewer, too,

The Democrats will fuck up (hint: Mamdani).

R19 with his head in the sand…Reality bites—he will be elected. Fair and square. Two choices:
1. Make a fool of yourself running around to find a way to “beat”’him; or
2. Work within the system to moderate results that work best for his voters AND all other NYers.
Imagine if we all stopped bitching and tried to find common ground on housing in NYC. But no—Jeff Blau cannot imagine a world where ZM is mayor. Guess what Jeff—you’re too late.

Not the House OR the Senate - the House AND the Senate, and in great enough numbers to impeach, convict and remove Trump. Rinse repeat with Vance. Not until Dems hold large majorities in both Houses and there's a Dem president will ANYTHING change.
Spoiler: Will never happen. Americans are the stupidest people on the planet.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 9, 2025 7:00 PM |
Spoiler: it ain’t happening. To survive, only one of the two houses of Congress will suffice. The House is it—

by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 9, 2025 7:16 PM |
The House is NOT enough to survive anymore. It might be marginally better than nothing but it won't stop Trump from shitting out his nonstop EO's and suing everybody. .

OP is under the assumption that our voting apparatus is clean and functional. Many of the machines are rigged. The final tallies in many elections are hacked, and Republicans continue to get away with it, improve their tactics with each new election, and that's because the Dems never object.

Truthfully he does not need them. As long as he maintains a GOP house or Senate. He has the Supreme Court all he does is issue executive orders, if they are legally challenged, he gets the court to rule in his favour. As long as one house remains hi,s he won't be impeached.
