Scarlett Johansson bares her back tattoos in pink Valentino on TIFF 2025 red carpet

The design was custom-made by the brand’s recently-appointed creative director Alessandro Michele. According to a post on Valentino’s official Instagram Story, when Michele made the dress, it was “envisioned entirely for [Johansson].”

Evidently, Michele sees the Black Widow star as Hollywood royalty, because he dressed her in a look fit for a princess.

The pink design consisted of a cowl neckline that mirrored the draping appearance of the sleeves, while two spaghetti straps held everything up.

At the waist, an empire bodice was accomplished with a ribbed band and twisty, ruched fabric, and it was completely backless around the other side, with a bow tying everything together.

Ugh. I just hate tattoos.

When I was a kid, the only people who had tattoos were convicted criminals.

I like the roses tattoo work, but the lamb doesn't really go IMO. For someone so beautiful, the tattoos become rather distracting.

I don't really understand how a temporary tattoo wouldn't be the better option. Have a few made up of you want to show it off at different events. Otherwise, big pieces like that really limit the kinds of things you can wear. They will always be there.

There used to be more of an awareness that body modifications like tattooing, piercing and cosmetic procedures are permanent.

This tattoo craze baffles me. What's so odd is how it's crashed through into polite society and they're now on everyone in the smarter set seems to have one. For what it's worth, I can get on board with it as a form of meaningful self-expression. One of my good friends and her siblings all got tatted as a memorial for their deceased father who died suddenly and tragically. While I can't really wrap my head around it, I can't debase a memorial to one's dead father. My friend got her kids birthdays tatted on her arm, another has her kids' names. You can't really bash them when they have that type of meaning attached to them. And who knows? ScarJo's enormous back tattoo pro ably has meaning to her, so same analysis. But regardless, they are distracting. I remember watching Death and Other Details (that short-lived thing with M. Patinkin) and the young female lead had this ghastly black thing on her wrist. Given that the show was trying to evoke a sense of old-world glamour and high-end living, that stuck out. The fact is, we are still too close to the period where tattoos were only on those who make poor choices. So for actors and actresses to exhibit them as a part of their characters, it still looks awkward. Maybe we'll get to a point where that's no longer the case, but Lady Mary or Rhett Butler showing a bad tat is always going to be ridiculous.

I like the dress but that's a very boring color on her.

Idk she never really fit into a box. She always seemed like a likeable actress but over hyped on her sexiness. She resented that too, and said she wanted to be taken more seriously. Piercings are often partly reversable They therefore don't alarm me quite as much as tattoos.

She has great comedy chops as well. Her Katie Britt was perfect.

If they're trying to highlight the Valentino gown, then the big tattoo distracts from that goal. And of course, they have to tell us what the heck it all is, because from more than ten feet away, it's impossible to tell and just looks like a big scribbled mess.

R9 when I was much younger, I once heard tattoos being likened to "a t-shirt you can't take off" which killed any interest I ever had in getting one.

...and even if I WERE into tats, I would *still* hate how they look when paired with an evening gown or any other formal wear. Conceal them with makeup for just one night, FFS.

It's sort of like how I don't mind scruff and/or longish hair on a guy—but ONLY if he's casually dressed.

One positive aspect about permanent body tattoos is that it can make it easier to identify a found corpse. Too morbid? I've even thought of getting a small tattoo in preparation for just for that possibility, but then I remembered I hate pain and don't want any health risks associated with getting tattooed.

Another negative would be trying to hide your true identity if you are a criminal, spy, or a member of a group targeted politically. I'm just trying to see the big picture.

I am grateful body tattoos were rare when I was young. I would have made regrettable choices, partly because of a lack of money then to pay for good quality work.
