Why was Juanita Hall dubbed in SOUTH PACIFIC?

She did her own singing in the Broadway show. Why wasn’t her singing sufficient for the movie.

And since they dubbed her, why didn’t they just put “Bali Hai” in a soprano range? Bali Hai could’ve been the dramatic “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” of South Pacific if it had been performed in a higher, dramatic, operatic range. But while it’s perhaps the signature motif of South Pacific, the actual number is rather underwhelming.

Director’s choice —duh.

Supposedly, her voice wasn't in great condition at the time, and Rodgers liked the voice of the London Bloody Mary better anyway, so insited she dub Juanita. Not the director's choice.

Rodgers was very picky about voices, and insisted on dubbing. Oddly, he found Hall's voice sufficient to NOT dub her in Flower Drum Song a few years later. Maybe he was too busy getting ghosts for Nancy Kwan, Reiko Sato, and Kam Tong?

Peggy Wood and Christopher Plummer were dubbed in The Sound of Music, and the kids' voices were "augmented" with additional singers (including Angela Cartwright's sister Veronica). I heard Plummer's actual Edelweiss vocal and found nothing wrong with it at all (likewise, I had no problem with Jeremy Brett's On The Street Where You Live).

OP - do you ever think you might have too much time on your hands?

by Anonymousreply 4September 8, 2025 8:26 PM

Juanita and Peggy still got Oscar nods. There you go…

by Anonymousreply 5September 8, 2025 8:33 PM

You found it on the sidewalk? 🤔

by Anonymousreply 6September 8, 2025 8:33 PM

Oscar nods?—Peggy, yes. Juanita, no.

by Anonymousreply 7September 8, 2025 10:34 PM

I was surprised by the dubbing, but actually liked the movie voice better
