29 years ago today, TV history was made
September 8, 1986 - a syndicated TV talk show launched with a relatively unknown TV host, and little did everyone know - that show would make TV history. Little did the host know she would become a multi-billionaire, and create a media empire.
The syndicated show: "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (aka "Oprah")
The show host turned media mogul : Oprah Winfrey (aka "Oprah")

I am proud to say I have never seen one of her television shows. Snippets here and there but never a full episode.

I was 10 years old when the show went national and grew up just a few miles west of Harpo Studios. The Oprah Show was the absolute best. Her last few seasons in particular were appointment television. She could book anyone. For decades, Chicago became a pit stop for A-Listers on their publicity tours, so vital was a booking on Oprah. Yes she became a megalomaniac but the show was phenomenally produced and her charisma and connection to her audience is completely unrivaled. I miss this show so much. There is such a void.

1986 was not 29 years ago.

I'd be fine with 1986 being 29 years ago. How can we make that happen?

I was told there wouldn’t be any gay math on this BBS.

Has anyone listened to/watched the six-part series about Oprah on the Beyond the Bastards podcast that aired this year? (Link to episode 1 below)
I just came across mention of it yesterday on another forum.

Another person here who has never seen a single episode of that cows’ show.
Very proud of that fact.
Fuck her and the opportunist loons that she gave a platform to. They have done so much damage to the collective psyche of this country.

I remember I was in elementary school when it first came on and I would watch when I got home. By the time I got to high school, Donahue started getting trashier to try to compete, with episodes featuring male strippers (which I recorded) and tabloid stuff. He could still change gears and do serious or political shows though. Was that a response to Oprah or had he always been a little trashy?

LOL! I realized the mistake after I hit post. So the normal reaction from me was to go back to the post, hit the edit button, and correct the mistake. However, the technology for this forum is 29 years old, and there is no 'edit' button (as we all know) to correct our errors once you hit 'post'.

I've posted this before, but here it is again.
A close relative of mine attended Northwestern Law School back in the early to mid 90s, then located right off the "Gold Coast" of Chicago.
His classmate buddy's girlfriend worked at Harpo Studios.
The girlfriend said that Oprah, behind the scenes, is NOT the warm and friendly type to anybody; that there could not be more of a contrast between her TV public image with her cold distance behind the TV show.
And yet, here's how fair I can be about Oprah, even though I've never liked her or her show (except I did catch "Hairdresser Break-ups" which held my attention).
Isn't her reported behavior pretty consistent with any ambitious climber in the Show-Folk biz whatever their race or gender?
