John Malkovich: I DID have a dangerous liaison with Michelle Pfeiffer - and it ended our marriages

Critics raved about the chemistry between Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich in the Oscar-winning film Dangerous Liaisons.

And now Malkovich has admitted for the first time that the on-screen passion between them spilled over into real life.

The 71-year-old, who played the amoral rich playboy the Vicomte de Valmont in the 1988 film, confirmed he had an affair with Pfeiffer – and that it had ended both their marriages.

Speaking on the Fashion Neurosis podcast, Malkovich said: 'It's not something I've ever really talked about. Put it this way, in the work I do, you make emotional bonds with people very quickly.

That's part of the work. 'For me, she was someone I valued greatly as a colleague, was great fun and moving and, with me, incredibly fair. And I certainly wasn't.

'I've learned over the course of my life that a great colleague is actually rarer than anything.

'And when that relationship becomes more than collegial or more than a friendship – even a profound friendship – then at least in my experience, and it might be my particular psychology or stupidity or ineptness or all of the above… you lose a great colleague.'

Pfeiffer filed for divorce from her husband Peter Horton in 1988, while Malkovich's marriage to actress Glenne Headly collapsed during filming.

A source who knew Headly told The Mail on Sunday: 'Glenne was no fool. She could see what was going on.

'The whole world was falling in love with Michelle Pfeiffer and so was her husband. She served him with divorce papers as soon as the movie wrapped.'

Dangerous Liaisons, based on the 18th-century French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, has become one of the most critically acclaimed costume dramas of all time because of its depiction of lust, manipulation and betrayal in aristocratic society.

Glenn Close plays the villainous Marquise de Merteuil who bets the Vicomte de Valmont (Malkovich) that he cannot seduce the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, played by Pfeiffer.

The real-life affair caused scandalous headlines, with the director Stephen Frears later telling The New York Times: '[Malkovich's] marriage was breaking up and during the movie he was having an affair with Michelle Pfeiffer.

'Dangerous Liaisons is about betrayal and lies and relationships unravelling. It was one of those times where reality and art intersect. It was overwhelming for John. Even for a man who delights in bad behaviour, that was a difficult time.'

The movie won three Oscars for costumes, art direction and adapted screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture.

Pfeiffer married TV writer David E Kelley in 1993. The couple have two children and are considered to have one of the happiest marriages in Hollywood.

The actress, 67, has maintained a dignified silence about the affair. Her publicist was approached for comment. Malkovich has been with director Nicoletta Peyran since 1989.

He’s ugly as fuck but sexy as hell

by Anonymousreply 1September 7, 2025 2:29 AM

He’s only 71? Ewww.

by Anonymousreply 2September 7, 2025 2:30 AM

R1, I know, right?

by Anonymousreply 3September 7, 2025 2:30 AM

"Even for a man who delights in bad behaviour, that was a difficult time."

It was awful, I tell you! Why, he even had to fuck Michelle Pfeiffer! Can you imagine???

by Anonymousreply 4September 7, 2025 2:31 AM

Poor Glenn.

You're half right, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 6September 7, 2025 2:31 AM

Even I'd say G should have won the Oscar for that film.

by Anonymousreply 7September 7, 2025 2:32 AM

I would have expected Michelle Pfeiffer to have much better taste.

by Anonymousreply 8September 7, 2025 2:34 AM

He’s ugly with a horrible body

by Anonymousreply 9September 7, 2025 2:42 AM

Wow. I can’t imagine Pfeiffer being a home wrecker! I guess I’m naive : (

by Anonymousreply 10September 7, 2025 3:03 AM

She gave up Peter Horton for him?

by Anonymousreply 11September 7, 2025 3:11 AM

Malkovitch is classic ugly-hot.

by Anonymousreply 12September 7, 2025 3:15 AM

Peter Horton was gorgeous, but maybe he was the quintessential dumb blonde.

Malkovich seems pretty intelligent/cerebral. Perhaps she liked the upgrade in intelligence.

Who knows?

by Anonymousreply 13September 7, 2025 3:15 AM

He and Keanu were dreadfully miscast. Glenn stole that movie . Nobody was buying his ugly ass as some great seducer. I never could stand him. I think its his vocie.

by Anonymousreply 14September 7, 2025 3:16 AM

That was well known back then. What she saw in him I'll never understand.

by Anonymousreply 15September 7, 2025 3:17 AM

[QUOTE] She gave up Peter Horton for him?

Horton was pretty but obviously couldn’t get it done in the bedroom. Malkovich might be packing and she wanted to take it out for a test drive on the road to finding better dick. I also doubt he was the only person with whom she cheated. Michelle could’ve had any man on the planet back then.

by Anonymousreply 16September 7, 2025 3:19 AM

I forgot he was married to Glenne.

I loved this movie and have seen it quite a few times. I was pretty young when it came out, but I had no idea this happened! How did it not become a much bigger deal? Michelle Pfeiffer got huge right after it came out!

by Anonymousreply 18September 7, 2025 3:22 AM

Horton was better looking in person than on screen. He was also the vainest man in Hollywood -- and that's saying a lot . He was convinced that a woman would have to be gay not to fall for him at first sight. Seriously. A friend who produced one of his tv shows said that the entire set couldn't stand him.

On the other hand, Glenne, whom I knew, was one of the loveliest people I've ever met. Genuinely sweet and good hearted, she wasn't cut out for the Hollywood scene. She died way too young.

by Anonymousreply 19September 7, 2025 3:42 AM

Both of them resemble insects.

by Anonymousreply 20September 7, 2025 3:48 AM

Michelle met her current and long time husband on a blind date that a friend set up. She said she could tell they would get along because they're both quiet people.

by Anonymousreply 21September 7, 2025 3:52 AM

I remember in the early 1990s there was an article on Pfieffer for People or some such tabloid and it spoke of her marriage to Horton, however it never said anything about the affair with Malkovich. The article did say that Horton did save Pfeiffer from a 'cult' that she was getting involved with when they were first dating. I wonder what the cult was...

The Home Shopping Network.

by Anonymousreply 23September 7, 2025 3:57 AM

Malkovich definitely isn’t a looker, but I thought he was hot as hell in Annie Lennox’s Walking on Broken Glass music video. I first saw it on VH1’s Pop Up Video when I was 12 or so. I made sure to record it so I could rewatch Malkovich.

I even watched the terrible Mary Reilly for him. He had a brief window of sexiness.

It was (seriously) a group that strove to live off air and sunlight rather than food and water.

Yes, you read that right.

MIchelle likes smart men. Horton was probably her only physical mate. I never thought Glenn was gonna beat Jodie Foster once I saw The Accused. It was not a good movie. But that was just an actress going for broke and it was disturbing and completely uncomfortable to watch that I thought it screamed Oscar. Never mind the child of Hollywood narrative.

by Anonymousreply 27September 7, 2025 4:58 AM

^That excruciating rape sequence would never be shot today. Not a single studio would keep it in movie.

by Anonymousreply 28September 7, 2025 5:02 AM

I agree R24. Malkcovich did have a period when he was strangely and nonsensically attractive, even sexy. That video was great!

by Anonymousreply 29September 7, 2025 5:55 AM

John Malkovich is one of those actors I simply cannot abide. His Biff Loman in Dustin Hoffman's "Death of a Salesman" was one of the worst performances I've ever seen, although it didn't help that he was totally miscast playing a former high school jock. Actually, Hoffman wasn't much better.

by Anonymousreply 30September 7, 2025 8:29 AM

Malkovich has his moments. Of course his best performance will always be Booth from In the Line of Fire. But I also liked him in Rounders, Knockaround Guys and he recently did a great job as a loathsome Russian tycoon on the Showtime series Billions.

by Anonymousreply 31September 7, 2025 12:44 PM

[quote]Malkovich has his moments.

His bald chanteuse kicking up her heels on the piano in Being John Malkovich lives in my head rent-free and still makes me giggle when I think about it.

by Anonymousreply 32September 7, 2025 12:58 PM

Has anyone seen his recent movie called Opus? It wasn’t great, but Malkovich was a total weirdo in it. It’s worth watching just for him.

by Anonymousreply 33September 7, 2025 4:05 PM

I didn’t like anything about Opus, including Malkovich.

by Anonymousreply 34September 7, 2025 4:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 35September 7, 2025 4:54 PM

He is very weird

by Anonymousreply 36September 7, 2025 5:14 PM

I thought OPUS was a hoot!

by Anonymousreply 37September 7, 2025 6:08 PM

[quote] MIchelle likes smart men. Horton was probably her only physical mate.

To be fair, despite his once-extraordinary beauty, Horton is said to be pretty intelligent--he did make a successful transition from acting to directing.

When Pfeiffer was becoming a huge star at this time, it apparently really bothered her that people spoke so highly of her beauty when she wanted to be known for her talent. She started complaining about this publicly, saying she did not think she was that good looking, but then she said she listened to her then boyfriend Fisher Stevens' mother who told her to shut up about this because no one among the public wanted to hear she didn't think she was pretty.

I've always really respected her. She's one of those rare California-raised actresses who got bimbo roles at first because of her beauty but was talented enough to get superb acting roles, and who took herself seriously as an actor.

by Anonymousreply 38September 7, 2025 6:20 PM

Fisher Stevens is great in Succession.

by Anonymousreply 39September 7, 2025 6:25 PM

[quote]Have you seen Fisher Steven’s

Oh, dear

by Anonymousreply 40September 7, 2025 8:08 PM

R12 never found him attractive but Malkovich is talented and seems pretty intelligent so I could sort of see the appeal.

by Anonymousreply 41September 7, 2025 8:13 PM

David E. Kelley isn't much of a looker either...

by Anonymousreply 42September 7, 2025 9:28 PM

How the most beautiful woman on Earth could sleep with him is beyond me. She also dated and was close to marrying Fisher Stevens. She dated Michael Keaton too pre-Batman.

by Anonymousreply 45September 7, 2025 9:49 PM

Peter Horton was considered good looking? I don't see it myself.

by Anonymousreply 46September 7, 2025 10:23 PM

I wonder if she blinked Val Kilmer in his prime too. She was close to him. She bet George Clooney tons of money that he would never marry - probably because he’s gay. She had to fork over a hefty sum to him after the nuptials.

by Anonymousreply 47September 7, 2025 10:23 PM

I think Peter is kinda cute.

by Anonymousreply 48September 7, 2025 10:23 PM

Honestly, if anyone is going to cheat there were no doubt issues going on in the marriage beforehand. Michelle said years ago that she forgot the mention that she had been previously married to her kids. Their minds were blown away. That’s how much she was over it. She said that they were basically too young and immature to be marry. You have to hand it to her and her husband David, being married 32 years in Hollywood is almost unheard of.

by Anonymousreply 49September 7, 2025 10:25 PM

Peter Horton, at his height of attractiveness, looked like a modern-day viking: a real Nordic, he-man look to him and a sexiness/appeal that comes off better on camera than in pictures.

R50 he reminds me of Ron Perlman from the 1980’s Beauty and the Beast show.

Peter was gorgeous. He said they split because they were too into their careers.

by Anonymousreply 53September 8, 2025 12:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 54September 8, 2025 12:31 AM

Kissing and telling is such bad form.

by Anonymousreply 55September 8, 2025 2:27 AM

I think Michelle said she and Kilmer briefly dated but he was more into her sister than her.

by Anonymousreply 56September 8, 2025 3:48 AM

I never found Horton good looking. People ct like he was on the level of a young Brad Pitt. I don’t get it

by Anonymousreply 57September 8, 2025 3:53 AM

r57 - let me ask you something: what do you think of Jacob Elordi's looks?

by Anonymousreply 58September 8, 2025 4:22 AM

John Malkovich always seemed as queer as a thirteen dollar bill to me.

by Anonymousreply 59September 8, 2025 4:25 AM

Agree that Malcovich in that era was sexy. Also, a too good looking Valmont does not make much sense, as he woulhavw to try so hard as he does.

The one thing that surprised me from this interview was is obsession with fashion and fabrics. Never even thought of him as particularly well dressed.

Dangerous Liaisons must have been cursed: Close, Malcovich, Pfeiffer, Thurman, not one Oscar among them.

[quote]Dangerous Liaisons must have been cursed: Close, Malcovich, Pfeiffer, Thurman, not one Oscar among them.

Don't forget Keanu.

by Anonymousreply 61September 8, 2025 9:53 AM

Malkovich is one of the few public figures who rubs me the wrong way solely on the basis of his looks. I guess it helps greatly with villain characterizations.

by Anonymousreply 62September 8, 2025 10:10 AM

Everyone loves Michelle’s skanky sister Dedee who posed nude for Playboy. Her ex shot himself in the head in front of her and his family still says that she killed him and her famous family got her off. They used to post about her on IMDB when they had forums.
