I don't have a dishwasher. I use Dawn but often just hot water for economy. It works fine.

by Anonymousreply 1September 6, 2025 8:02 PM

Oh crap. :(

I use Cascade or Finish, whatever's cheaper. Sorry, environment.

by Anonymousreply 2September 6, 2025 8:05 PM

All over the news this week is Powder rules over Liquid pods

by Anonymousreply 3September 6, 2025 8:07 PM

Just 2 of us so we hand wash

by Anonymousreply 4September 6, 2025 8:10 PM

R1 can you pass the "which one is the mother " test?

by Anonymousreply 5September 6, 2025 8:10 PM

Store brand, they're all the same so cheapest makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 6September 6, 2025 8:12 PM

Cascade powder

by Anonymousreply 7September 6, 2025 8:18 PM

Super Cascade with every chemical know to man added but damn, my dishes are spotless!

by Anonymousreply 8September 6, 2025 8:23 PM

I used to do the environmental thing with Eco powders, but now use Finish Quantum Powerball as it's the only thing I've found that gets the coffee stains out of the cups.

For stuff that doesn't go in the dishwasher, I use Dawn Detergent.

by Anonymousreply 9September 6, 2025 8:25 PM

Whichever pods are cheaper, right now I have Finish.

I run the machine every 3 or 4 days, so yes I use a sponge and dish soap to get most of the crud off, as I don't trust the dishwasher with totally dirty stuff dried on for days.

by Anonymousreply 10September 6, 2025 8:28 PM

whatever's on sale

by Anonymousreply 11September 6, 2025 8:29 PM

R1 are you aware that dishwashers use less water and are more environmentally friendly than hand washing?

by Anonymousreply 12September 6, 2025 9:02 PM

R12, he doesn't have a dishwasher.

by Anonymousreply 13September 6, 2025 9:08 PM

[quote]I know all you bitches prerinse

But with a different hand than I use to prelube.

by Anonymousreply 14September 6, 2025 9:13 PM

I have a dishwasher that I bought new 19 years ago when I moved in this house. Barely used. Just me so I hand wash mostly. Same plates, utensils, etc. But have an old box of Cascade under the sink in case I do.

by Anonymousreply 15September 6, 2025 9:22 PM

I have a big tub of cascade pods, but I rarely even turn my dishwasher on. A dishwasher for one person is a waste of time. It takes me less than 5 minutes to wash my dishes and cooking pots after any meal if I eat at home.

by Anonymousreply 16September 6, 2025 9:26 PM

Where's Lemon Joy OP?

by Anonymousreply 17September 6, 2025 9:31 PM

I had some friends over last weekend and one was shocked I was putting dishes in the dishwasher without rinsing. I had to explain how many chemicals are in those little pods and how the hot water works in such an appliance. I also have guilt about all the chemicals and possible cancer-causing ingredients from certain products...but I love the smell and powerful performance of those things

by Anonymousreply 18September 6, 2025 9:39 PM

Brand Consuelo.

by Anonymousreply 19September 6, 2025 10:09 PM

Palmolive. I handwash just about everything.

by Anonymousreply 20September 6, 2025 10:34 PM

You’re soaking in it!

Palmolive doesn't make dishwasher detergent. And I haven't seen Electrasol in decades

by Anonymousreply 23September 7, 2025 4:13 AM

Remember, R23, we at DL reside in the 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 24September 7, 2025 4:21 AM

For FUCK'S sake, OP! It's "Trumbull"!

by Anonymousreply 25September 7, 2025 4:43 AM

I use Cascade powder, and I've resolved to stop after I finish this box.

So many chemicals, from production to use. I stumbled across this ProPublica report recently, and that did it for me.

Seventh Generation liquid dish soap is excellent for hand-washing, so I'm going to start buying one of their dishwasher formulations.

by Anonymousreply 26September 7, 2025 5:13 AM

R12, I didn't know that! Unexpected facts like that are always interesting.

I'm a renter in an historic old building, though, and my apartment has no dishwasher. I prefer it that way--I want the apartment to remain as much as possible like it was 100 years ago. I despise landlords who modernize historic buildings. If I wanted to live in a modern building, I would.

by Anonymousreply 27September 7, 2025 11:08 AM

Dawns the only one to use

by Anonymousreply 28September 7, 2025 11:17 AM

I use Cascade powder from the box, and a finishing rinse. Pods just don't do it properly with this hard, high-alkalinity NJ tap water. Unfortunately, neither do the more ecologically friendly detergents like 7th Gen, etc.

R26 I know it's true, these products are as toxic as it gets. I try to reduce my complicity by quick pre-washing with a wet sponge at the sink, and then using just 1/3 of the recommended amount of Cascade.

by Anonymousreply 29September 7, 2025 11:18 AM

[quote]So many chemicals, from production to use.

I use only paper plates and paper bowls and plastic utensils, so never use the dishwasher. I'm saving the environment.

by Anonymousreply 30September 7, 2025 12:35 PM

Electrosol became Finish. They changed the name probably 20 years ago now.

by Anonymousreply 31September 7, 2025 12:41 PM

Finish.

by Anonymousreply 32September 7, 2025 1:15 PM

Finish or the Costco brand, which works just as well.

by Anonymousreply 33September 7, 2025 1:22 PM

r12 I know a lot of people who still think hand washing gets dishes cleaner...back in the 1960s my parents bought a dishwasher and we stopped getting colds that we passed around from person to person.

To me the dishes aren’t sanitized unless they go through the dishwasher

by Anonymousreply 34September 7, 2025 1:42 PM

[quote] [R1] are you aware that dishwashers use less water and are more environmentally friendly than hand washing?

I am not R1 but I am aware that the makers of Cascade claim that in their commercials and while that might be true for people who leave the water on the entire time they are rinsing the hand washed dishes, it isn't for those of us who don't just let the water constantly run. They also don't take into consideration whether you rinse the dishes before loading, or the electricity used to run the dishwasher.

by Anonymousreply 35September 7, 2025 1:52 PM

Costco Kirkland brand

by Anonymousreply 36September 7, 2025 1:53 PM

R26

That’s what Op posted.

Still, a great read…the world is deterioting in silence, right in front of us.

by Anonymousreply 37September 7, 2025 2:47 PM

ProPublica is a Debbie Downer. Why can't we just talk about the greatness of America?

by Anonymousreply 38September 7, 2025 3:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 39September 7, 2025 3:27 PM

Cascade Professional Fryer Boil Out,

Because I am a bad person and it's better than regular Cascade because it still has all the chemicals in it that are environmentally unfriendly and were removed from regular dishwasher soap, and it actually cleans the dishes.

I also add TSP to every laundry load in addition to Tide, because while environmentally unfriendly, I now have clean laundry again. I just add back to the laundry detergent what they removed.

Mea Culpa Mea Culpa.

We DO recycle though.

by Anonymousreply 40September 7, 2025 3:37 PM

Do people really need dishwashers? Especially singles or couples? Seems like a huge waste when you could just dump your dirty utensils in some hot soapy water for a while (the old-fashion way).

by Anonymousreply 41September 7, 2025 4:02 PM

R41 - I’ll cut a bitch who takes away my dishwasher

by Anonymousreply 42September 7, 2025 4:11 PM

[quote]you could just dump your dirty utensils in some hot soapy water for a while

That makes me want to vomit. Touching or washing dirty, soiled dishes is disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 43September 7, 2025 4:13 PM

<- Wear Playtex*gloves, Gen Z-er.

R34, I don't know why your family stopped passing so many colds around once you got a dishwasher but come on, think about it. You all lived in the same house touching all the same surfaces from light switches to faucet handles to remote controls, you all continued to sneeze and cough around each other but a dishwasher made the difference.

by Anonymousreply 45September 7, 2025 4:41 PM

R44 I won a case of Platex gloves as part of my “parting gifts” when I lost my fifth game of Jeopardy! My mother didn’t want them.

She did take the case of Tetley tea. ;)

by Anonymousreply 46September 7, 2025 4:44 PM

I don’t pre-rinse. It hasn’t been necessary for decades. I used Kirkland detergent from Costco which is no doubt made by someone on OP’s list.

by Anonymousreply 47September 7, 2025 4:47 PM

When I was 11, I wrote a letter...

by Anonymousreply 48September 7, 2025 4:55 PM

[quote] A dishwasher for one person is a waste of time.

Speak for yourself, R16. I consider it a waste of my time to wash dishes. I love my dishwasher. And you don't get virtue points for handwashing your dishes.

by Anonymousreply 49September 7, 2025 4:58 PM

[quote] the old-fashion way

Oh dear, R41.

Also, who are you to say how singles or couples should do or not do?

by Anonymousreply 50September 7, 2025 5:00 PM

I'm a rinser. My sister and her lazy hubby throw everything in completely caked with food and grime. Drives me nuts.

by Anonymousreply 51September 7, 2025 5:08 PM

Any better brand on sale, including one store brand. I don't buy the very cheapest brands because, having tried, they either left residue or the pods didn't dissolve properly, or some failing that outweighed their economy.

I have a small (2/3 scale) dishwasher perfect for two people using it every day. Knowing it will be used daily, almost everything can go in it -- anytime i want a cup of water or coffee or to use a spoon, it goes immediately into the dishwasher when I'm done and is run every night or morning. This keeps the kitchen tidy and saves pre-rinsing things.

by Anonymousreply 52September 7, 2025 5:56 PM

Modern dishwasher detergents mix with the grease caked onto your dirty dishes, turning it into soap. Your d/w detergent will work better without rinsing.

I am single, I cook from scratch 80% of the time, I entertain guests, and I fill the dishwasher almost daily. I run it if it is over half full, because even a half load is using less water and electricity than washing by hand.

People have studied whether hand washing or machine washing uses less water. It was determined that dishwashers are always more frugal, unless the hand washer takes extraordinary measures to control water use. For instance, my d/w uses only about 4 gal water for the entire cycle. That's less than a sinkful of water.

The dishwasher is also a great way to clean your bong.

R55 they don’t make detergent. Did you not read the article!

by Anonymousreply 57September 7, 2025 6:09 PM

Perhaps that’s why r55 said we should be hand-washing our dishes. (Speaking of not reading. )

by Anonymousreply 58September 7, 2025 6:20 PM

r28 There's no such thing as Dawn dishwasher detergent.

by Anonymousreply 59September 7, 2025 8:05 PM

R58 the article had been linked at the start duh

by Anonymousreply 60September 7, 2025 8:12 PM

R57 and others, Palmolive did or does make a dishwasher detergent. I know I bought it some years back. It is called Palmolive Eco dishwasher detergent gel. You can find references to it online, but I believe it is no longer made.

I alternate between the high-end Finish Ultimate and the high-end Cascade Platinum Plus. I don't use store-brand anything. If I'm being honest, I can't really tell the difference between the two, but I like to switch it up to keep the ad agencies on their toes.
