Help me pick a rug

I had a nice cream wool rug in the living room, looked great, but every little stain showed and it cost $150–200 a pop to clean. So I’m going darker this time. These are washable and cheap enough that if one wears out, I can just replace it.

Here’s where I go full neurotic mess: 1 and 3 look almost the same in the pics, but they’re not. I’ve stared at them so long I can’t tell what’s real anymore. So 1, 2, or 3?

Number 2 would seem to be a great one for comment because of all the naminals.

While your selection is attractive, rugs don't have to be really dark to hide stains. I have several area rugs that are lovely, the mid tones brighten the room as well as hiding dirt. Sometimes really dark toned floors actually make dust very visible.

Thanks R2 mid-range toned colors would normally make sense, but my MCM sofa is this dark loden green. Gorgeous, yes, but also the world’s most impossible color to work with. I had a light cream rug before and it worked beautifully, but every stain showed blah blah blah. That’s why I’m spiraling over these darker options. I know, I brought this on myself.

#2 or #3 - problem with #2 is that it will compete for attention with any furniture, so if you have drab furniture it will pick up the room. If you have distinctive furniture, it may be too much.

A rug defines a room generally and you work around it - not the other way around.

#1 is boring. I prefer #2, but it all depends on what you're putting it with.

Mr. Sheddy McWhitefluff is dying to smear his pure white belly fur on all three. 😼😹

#3 is the best.

by Anonymousreply 6September 6, 2025 8:03 AM

They're all a bit twee. #3 is the least bad.

by Anonymousreply 7September 6, 2025 9:04 AM

Another vote for #3

by Anonymousreply 8September 6, 2025 9:08 AM

No. 3. It's a reasonably faithful William Morris with good pattern and colors.

No. 2 is too kitschy with the pink flamingos and Geranimals. No. 1 manages to be both bland and busy. No. 3 has a strong design but the palette of greens keeps the foliate design in check. It's more quietly substantial where the other two are are more nervous in effect.

As for the rug, I agree with r4's points.

I am cheered that the First World Problems Troll has not yet appeared.

Not loving 2.

by Anonymousreply 11September 6, 2025 11:38 AM

They're all rather busy prints, so your couch, pillows, and maybe drapes need to be solids or else it may become too much. (IMO)

I like 1 and 3 best, but in these pictures they look old and worn. Are they purposely distressed like this? If so, I'd go with 2 as I never got into the 'distressed' look.

Oh honey, no one believes you could afford any of those choices let alone live somewhere large enough for it. Why not just create a poll asking which one is preferred?

Put #2 in your dining room to compliment your Lynn Chase Jaguar Jungle dinner service.

#3, the second one is pretty, but, it's a bit too Jungle Book.

by Anonymousreply 15September 6, 2025 1:21 PM

#1 is really the best BUT it suffers from that silly "aged" look, which has nothing to do with the age of the rug and all to do with faking the aged look with dyes.

Therefore, #3. If those three are the only choices.

You need to be careful with wall color; too light a wall color and the rug will overpower everything in the room, and too dark a paint color - unless you are specifically going for moody and dark - the room's walls will dictate and limit the furniture and accessories,.

They all see so busy. May sure the furniture is pretty uniform and solid colored. Otherwise everyone would get a headache

Watch Out, green can be an absolute cunt

by Anonymousreply 18September 6, 2025 2:08 PM

I hate all of them. They look like something that would go in Granny's front room.

by Anonymousreply 19September 6, 2025 2:17 PM

green will trip you up when you least expect it

by Anonymousreply 20September 6, 2025 2:33 PM

If your sofa is a dark loden green as you mentioned - I would not get a green toned rug. Too much.

Get a deep burgundy with some patterns or shapes with colors like gold and green in it that would compliment not compete with the sofa.

But a green-toned carpet with a green-toned MCM sofa? I think that's a big mistake. The two dark greens will also compete with each other - you'd have to go a completely different, lighter toned green for it to possibly blend.

by Anonymousreply 21September 6, 2025 3:51 PM

I hate to say beige but it goes with loden.

by Anonymousreply 22September 6, 2025 4:14 PM

One and three look the same, three is slightly crisper.

I prefer #2. The animals are charming and it would go with your dark green sofa.

by Anonymousreply 23September 7, 2025 5:48 AM

I pick this one!

by Anonymousreply 25September 7, 2025 11:38 AM

Not 2. Please. It’s so granny & will show every piece of dirt, dust or dog hair.

by Anonymousreply 26September 7, 2025 11:44 AM

Do the Cleopatra test with the help of a friend. Roll out of each one to see which one that can be done the best in. You may want to pass on the poking with the sword bit first.
