But Activision wouldn’t give him final cut privilege (there may be a handful of directors around who command this - Nolan, Cameron, Scorcese - but he was certainly one of them.)
Steven Spielberg wanted to direct a Call of Duty movie

What kind of witless gamer asshole says no to Steven Spielberg?
He can take an absolute stinker of a treatment - "Jaws" was a shitty novel, and "The Polar Express" was a short story for kids - and make a zillion bucks at the box office.
Meantime, the "Call of Duty" games sell easily, but they're shit. They're linear, predictable, and really pointless to play more than once unless you're playing with five of your friends. They're in no position to question someone else's creativity.

He still could. No one's stopping him.

Robert Zemickis did Polar Express

The Modern Warfare storyline would be pretty exciting as a movie. The twists are pretty out there.

R3 My mistake. Maybe I was thinking of The BFG, or that awful horse movie he made.

He's not the right director for a project like this. Michael Bay would probably be the right choice, considering all the military worship in his films.

There is a reason Michael Bay barely works outside Transformers r6
Besides he and Spielberg are close friends (odd as it may seem, I assume they’re both on the Spectrum) and if Spielberg thought Bay was a good fit for the project he would have given it to him while producing it only, as he did with Transformers.
The likely reason is that Activision probably merely wants branded onscreen drivel and wants a hack who does whatever they tell him to do.

Spielberg did an outstanding job with Saving Private Ryan which should have won Best Picture but fat and ugly Weinstein rigged the votes.

Spielberg hasn’t made a good movie in 35 years. No way were they gonna let him make that. This is the idiot who said audiences should learn Spanish if they want to know what is being said in his bomb West Side Story film when asked why there were no subtitles because that would be offensive.

Michael Transformers Bay!? Good Christ ol mighty. He’s hated beyond belief. Maybe if it was a cartoon.

People who cut the checks. Spielberg hasn’t been relevant is a very, very, very long time. He’s considered past his sell date.

What century are you living in, toots?

Shakespeare in Love was always going to win no matter who released it. It was a love letter to show business and the creative process. That’s why Birdman and Argo won Best Picture too.

If Spielberge directed "Call of Duty", most probably the main character is grown-ass dude who still suffers PTSD from his parents divorce when he was a kid.

You have to be pretty fucking arrogant and dumb to refuse to give Spielberg final cut privileges when your IP is Call of Duty.
